49ers claim former Texans CB Mark Fields off waivers

The San Francisco 49ers claimed CB Mark Fields II off waivers from the Houston Texans.

The San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday announced the acquisition of cornerback Mark Fields II off waivers from the Houston Texans.

Fields began his NFL career with the Chiefs in 2019 as an undrafted free agent out of Clemson. He was traded to the Vikings and appeared in one game before landing on their practice squad. He appeared in two games for Minnesota in 2020 before being waived in December. The Texans claimed him of waivers and he appeared in two games for Houston last season. They waived him Tuesday and San Francisco claimed him Wednesday.

In five games, Fields has mostly been a special teams contributor, appearing on 26 defensive snaps across three games with the Vikings. His two games with the Texans featured 17 special teams snaps according too Pro Football Reference.

The 49ers are very thin at cornerback so it makes sense that they’d scoop one available on waivers. Fields gives them four cornerbacks under contract for next season including Ken Webster, Adonis Alexander and Tim Harris Jr.

Vikings CB Mark Fields II designated to return from IR

The Vikings announced that CB Mark Fields II is designated to return from IR.

The Vikings have struggled with cornerback depth this season, and it looks like help could be on the way soon.

The team annoucned that cornerback Mark Fields II is designated to return from IR.

Fields II is a decent option for the slot corner spot. Earlier in the season, he played against the Titans on special teams. Against the Packers in Green Bay, Wis., he played 20 defensive snaps. He finished with one solo tackle.

Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported that Fields suffered a punctured lung from being hit by an opponent’s cleat during the Packers victory.

Fields II might not be the team’s No. 1 option at corner, but he definitely can help solidify the group. Minnesota still has its injuries to deal with at corner, though. As it stands, cornerbacks Holton Hill, Mike Hughes and S/CB George Iloka are all on the reserve/injured list.

Minnesota’s new-look corner group has dealt with plenty of inconsistency. Hopefully for the Vikings, Fields II can earn some playing time soon.

Vikings S George Iloka, CB Mark Fields II elevated to active roster for Titans game

The Minnesota Vikings are elevating two NFL defensive backs: Vikings S George Iloka, CB Mark Fields.

Minnesota’s secondary has been depleted with both cornerbacks Mike Hughes and Cameron Dantzler being ruled out for Sunday.

The Vikings have called up two players from the practice squad for the Week 3 home game against the Titans, both of whom are defensive backs.

Vikings safety George Iloka and cornerback Mark Fields II will be active for the game. Fields II was mentioned as a candidate for the nickel corner spot in training camp. Hughes usually plays nickel corner, but with him out, Fields could possibly fill in at that role, along with rookie corner Jeff Gladney and others.

Iloka might not play much, considering how many snaps Anthony Harris and Harrison Smith usually play. You never know, though, maybe one of those two go down and Iloka would step up. Safety Josh Metellus played three snaps in the Week 2 loss. Maybe Iloka takes that role on the team, or maybe Metellus stays in that spot.
