Nintendo devs wanted a Waluigi Peach, but Miyamoto banned the idea

Nintendo devs at Camelot pitched a Waluigi Peach concept after the success of Mario Tennis, but Miyamoto instantly forbade it

Nintendo devs at Camelot, makers of Mario sports games and Golden Sun, once pitched a Waluigi Peach concept after the anti-hero’s triumphant debut in the Mario Tennis sports game, but Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto instantly forbade it (thanks, Nintendo Life). The revelation came in an interview on Nintendo Dream Web, which Twitter user gosokkyo translated.

Fans reacted so positively to Waluigi’s first appearance, that the Camelot team almost immediately began working on a concept for “WaluPeach,” who would be a “fallen angel” take on the Mushroom Kingdom princess. The pitch never stood a chance, though. When the team presented it to Miyamoto, he turned the idea down before even looking at the designs.

“I know it’s gonna be just like Doronjo, so don’t bother,” he reportedly said.

Doronjo is a villainess from the popular 1970s heist anime Yatterman, who regularly appeared in a fancy mask and someone revealing leotard. Doronjo’s general attitude certainly seems fitting for a Waluigi type, so perhaps Miyamoto wasn’t far off the mark.

Either way, we have Princess Daisy as a Peach counterpart now, though she’s hardly the villain type. Fans created their own anti-Peach with Bowsette when Nintendo added the Super Crown in New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe in 2018. The item transforms Toadette into Peach, so fans decided to create an item that transformed Peach into Bowser, because of course they did.

Whether any of these unorthodox characters get a nod in the upcoming Super Mario Bros. movie seems unlikely, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

Universal Hollywood’s Super Nintendo World has an opening date at last

Super Nintendo World Hollywood opens the Mushroom Kingdom’s gates – and the first Nintendo theme park – early in 2023

After months of teases and tantalizing looks at the Tokyo branch, we have a Super Nintendo World opening date for the Universal Hollywood park at last. On Twitter, Nintendo announced the park will open its gates on Feb. 17, 2023, and released a brief trailer showing a bit of what to expect from the Nintendo theme park.

Like its Tokyo counterpart, the main attraction at the Hollywood Super Nintendo World is its Mario Kart battle ride, where players hop in karts (but of course) and use digital versions of classic Mario Kart items, including the blue shell and banana peels, as they battle it out against Bowser and other foes.

Elsewhere in the park, you can look forward to using your special park bracelet to interact with a range of Mario attractions, from rides to other interactive elements scattered around the kingdom, and earn coins in the process.

You’ll have to shell out real cash at the park’s merchandise store and Mushroom Kingdom cafe if you want to leave with a souvenir or take a gastric tour of Peach’s domain.

Bear in mind the February date is only for the Universal Hollywood park. There’s still no opening date for the Universal Orlando Super Nintendo World location.

If you’re after even more Mario outside the Nintendo Switch, you won’t have much longer to wait. Nintendo and Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. Movie releases in April 2023.

Best Switch games to play on Nintendo’s handheld

From Breath of the Wild to Bayonetta 2, here are the best games to play on Nintendo Switch.

Putting together a list of the best Nintendo Switch games isn’t easy. There are thousands of different titles available to download on the beloved handheld, many of which are excellent first-party games or indie smash hits from talented external studios. Put it this way: there’s a reason the Switch has been the best selling console almost every month for three years in a row, and it’s not just because PS5s are rarer than unicorns – if you did get one though, there are loads of upgraded PS4 games you can play on PS5.

Anyway, our list of the best Switch games is fairly hefty given just how many bangers there are on this console, so we’ve put the entries in alphabetical order to make it easier for you to see if your favorite made the cut. This also means people won’t come at us with Omega Cannons or Master Swords for not putting Extremely Niche Game 4.3 Remix Remastered above Breath of the Wild, and allows us to give the top slot to something very close to our hearts. If you don’t like it, maybe you should… switch things up. You hated that? Our bad, we’ll do the ol’ switcheroo and get someone else in. Still not impressed? Ninten-d’oh!

Sorry about that. Here are the best Switch games to play on Nintendo’s handheld.

Mario movie trailer offers first glimpse of Chris Pratt as Mario

Nintendo and Illumination debuted the first Mario movie trailer, with a brief look at Jack Black as Bowser and Chris Pratt as Mario

Nintendo debuted the first Mario movie trailer, officially called just The Super Mario Bros. Movie, during a focused Nintendo Direct event, highlighting a portion of the film’s plot, giving viewers a glimpse at the film’s luscious animation style, and introducing Chris Pratt as Mario for the first time. If you were hoping for something a bit more like Charles Martinet’s classic rendition of Nintendo’s star plumber, you may be slightly disappointed. Jack Black’s portrayal of Bowser seems full of life, but Pratt sounds like… well, Chris Pratt.

While the creative choice seems a bit jarring, set as it is in a fantastical world with magic turtles and warrior penguins staving off Bowser’s merciless invasion, some fans noted there may be a reason for Mario’s apparent lack of distinct character voice.

“They’re probably going off of the original story as presented in American media, which is that Mario was originally from Brooklyn,” one Twitter user wrote.

Another suggested the movie might turn Chris Pratt into Mario, following the popular isekai anime genre, which centers on protagonists being transported to other worlds.

The trailer ends with a brief glimpse of Luigi, Mario’s brother, running away from hordes of Dry Bones, the skeletal remains of Koopas brought back to life, but we’ve yet to see Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach and a handful of other key characters.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie will release in theatres on Apr. 7, 2023, but if you need a bit more Mario in your life before then, Mario+Rabbids: Sparks of Hope is shaping up to be a memorable experience.

Nintendo suddenly delays the new Super Mario movie until April 2023

Shigeru Miyamoto let fans know that the film isn’t coming out this year anymore.

Well, everyone’s favorite plumber won’t be returning to the big screen in 2022.

On Monday, Nintendo announced that the forthcoming Super Mario Bros. movie won’t release until April 7, 2022.

“This is Miyamoto. After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023–April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America,” Miyamoto said on Twitter. “My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait.”

The best memes about Chris Pratt voicing Mario in Nintendo’s upcoming film

Mamma mia!

There’s nothing like a surprise movie casting to generate hype for your upcoming film. Unfortunately for Nintendo, the headliner for their animated Mario movie has many scratching their heads.

As a joint project between Nintendo and Illumination (the studio behind Despicable Me and The Secret Life of Pets), an animated Mario film will be gracing the silver screen in North America on December 21, 2022. During Thursday’s Nintendo Direct, the cast list was revealed for the upcoming movie and features… Chris Pratt as Mario?

Yep, you heard that right, Pratt will be voicing the titular character for Nintendo’s upcoming Mario film. This is not a joke.

The cast of the upcoming animated Mario movie also features some incredibly inspired casting, such as Charlie Day voicing Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad. However, for many Nintendo fans, the choice to cast Pratt as Mario when original voice actor Charles Martinet or Italian-American Danny DeVito were right there has many… quite confused.

One Twitter user, on the other hand, seemingly predicted this outcome well over a year ago somehow.

Here’s how the internet reacted to the news that Pratt will be set to voice everyone’s favorite video game plumber.
