The definitive ranking of every Mario Kart 64 driver

The best drivers to pick, ranked.

Yes, this post is … a few decades late (although with the Mario movie coming, it’s timely!)

But I can safely say that Mario Kart 64 is the GOAT of Mario games, something we’ve been discussing a lot as a staff here at For The Win.

So I decided now’s a good time as any to rank the best drivers, because I spent … oh, I don’t know, a bajillion hours playing the now-classic Nintendo 64 game in college. I consider myself something of an expert (but not like Jose Ramirez).

Who is the worst and should never be used? Who is the best and should always be selected? Here’s the answer:

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Wave 2 DLC comes out next week

Eight more booster course pass tracks are heading to Mario Kart 8 very soon.

It’s been a while since Mario Kart 8 Deluxe got some new tracks, but that’s about to change. If you own the Booster Course Pass, that is.

On Thursday, Nintendo announced that the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Wave 2 DLC will be available on Aug. 4, 2022. Two new cups are part of Wave 2, containing four tracks each. Most of which are re-releases from classic titles like Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart Wii, Mario Kart Tour, and more. We’ll list all eight tracks below.

Turnip Cup

  • Tour New York Minute
  • SNES Mario Circuit 3
  • N64 Kalimari Desert
  • DS Waluigi Pinball

Propeller Cup

  • Tour Sydney Sprint
  • GBA Snow Land
  • Wii Mushroom Gorge
  • Sky-High Sundae

The only brand-new track is Sky-High Sundae. It looks pretty delicious in the Wave 2 DLC trailer, which you can check out below.

There’s also a high-quality YouTube mirror available here. Have to say, seeing Mushroom Gorge again is giving me nightmarish blue shell flashbacks.

Earlier this year, Nintendo made the announcement that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe would receive 48 new courses. The first eight came out in March 2022, while we’re only just getting the second wave next week.

Remember, accessing all these means you’ll have to buy the Booster Course Pass, which costs $25 on the eShop. However, anyone with a Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack subscription gets all of the DLC automatically.

‘Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’ is now the bestselling ‘Mario Kart’ of all time

Just think of all those blue shell victims…

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe  just sped past Mario Kart Wii  in sales, becoming the bestselling entry in the long-running series.

Nintendo released the financial results for its second quarter on Thursday and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe seems to be trucking along just fine. Selling another 3.34 million copies in the first quarter of this year, bringing its lifetime sales to 38.74 million! Just think of all those blue shell victims. It’s terrifying.

Those are particularly staggering figures when you remember that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe  is a port of a Wii U game that came out back in 2014. When the Switch launched in 2017, Nintendo re-released the game with its DLC, some new tracks and a battle mode. That decision sure paid off, right?

The Nintendo Switch might not be as powerful as the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, but that hasn’t stopped the five-year-old console from still selling like hotcakes. The  global semiconductor shortages are slowing Nintendo’s production of them right now, though. That and there are just so many excellent-looking games like Splatoon 3  and Kirby and the Forgotten Land  still to come.
