Oscar De La Hoya, Marcos Maidana in talks for fight: report

Oscar De La Hoya and Marcos Maidana reportedly are in talks for a fight between the former champions.

Oscar De La Hoya vs. Marcos Maidana?

BoxingScene.com is reporting that representatives of the former champions have discussed the possibility of making a fight between them. Eric Gomez, president of Golden Boy, and Grant Elvis Phillips, Maidana’s advisor, have spoken within the past two weeks, sources told the website.

No one is saying exactly when or where the bout would take place.

De La Hoya, 47, has said repeatedly that he’s serious about a comeback even though he hasn’t fought since he was knocked out by Manny Pacquiao in 2008. Maidana, 37, also has spoken about a return to the ring. He hasn’t fought since he lost his rematch with Floyd Mayweather in 2014.

De La Hoya has indicated that he would fight at around 154 or 160 pounds, which would suit Maidana. He last fought at 147 but, at this stage of the game, would be more comfortable at a heavier weight.

Is Maidana the “top guy” De La Hoya recently said he planned to fight? No. At the same time, the Argentine isn’t ancient and has a name big enough to generate interest.

Of course, any fight in which De La Hoya takes part would be big because of his own celebrity status. And he could use an influx of cash right about now: He has lost his biggest attraction, Canelo Alvarez, with whom he agreed to part ways as of Friday.

More classic fights: Showtime to showcase Floyd Mayweather tonight

Showtime Boxing Classics features two Floyd Mayweather fights beginning at 10 ET / PT tonight.

Showtime Boxing Classics features two Floyd Mayweather fights beginning at 10 ET / PT tonight.

Mayweather takes on Marcos Maidana in their first fight, which took place in May 2014. That’s followed by Mayweather’s final bout, a knockout of MMA star Conor McGregor in August 2017.

The fights are available on Showtime, the Showtime streaming service and Showtime Anytime.

Some observers thought that the pressure-fighting Maidana did enough in his first fight with Mayweather to get the decision, although the judges gave Mayweather a majority-decision victory. Mayweather also won the rematch.

And while the McGregor fight was a mismatch from the outset, it attracted a huge number of viewers and allowed Mayweather to finish is career at 50-0.

As part of the coverage, combat sports analysts Luke Thomas and Brian Campbell will host the live digital series “Morning Kombat Classics” on the Morning Kombat YouTube Channel.

Thomas and Campbell will watch the fights along with viewers and give real-time reactions and answer questions. Viewers can participate by using the hashtag #FightFromHome on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

Does Marcos Maidana have tooth he knocked from mouth of Floyd Mayweather?

Marcos Maidana claims he has a tooth he knocked from the mouth of former rival Floyd Mayweather.

Only in boxing.

Marcos Maidana says he has an unusual keepsake courtesy of former two-time opponent Floyd Mayweather – one of the boxing king’s teeth, which the hard-punching Argentine claims he knocked out of Mayweather’s mouth in their 2014 rematch.

Mayweather acknowledged that Maidana stunned him with a big right hand in Round 3 of that fight but denies he lost a tooth.

Maidana posted a photo on Instagram that appears to show a tooth set in a piece of jewelry that he says flew out of the mouth of his rival. Videos of that moment aren’t conclusive. You can see for yourself below.

Mayweather said after the fight, according to The Mirror: “In the third round, when he hit me with that shot after the bell, it was a real good shot. It got my attention. It was nothing I never felt before, but it was a really good shot which got my attention.”

Did he lose a tooth? “No, he didn’t knock my teeth out. Not at all! He’s a strong guy, he’s a good puncher, but no, as far as my teeth missing, absolutely not.”

Maidana gave Mayweather a surprisingly tough time in their first fight, in May 2014, losing a majority decision that earned him a second shot at the then-No. 1 fighter in the world. He lost a unanimous decision in the rematch four months later in spite of tooth issue.

Maidana, 36, reportedly is making a comeback. His handlers have said that they have been in contact with the retired Mayweather about a third fight but nothing has come of it.

Mayweather last fought in August 2017, when he stopped MMA star Conor McGregor.

Marcos Maidana to face ex-kickboxer Jorge Acero Cali in April?

Marcos Maidana is reportedly coming out of retirement to face former kickboxer Jorge Acero Cali in a five-rounder at 187 pounds.

Evidently, not even Marcos Maidana, the recipient of two Floyd Mayweather windfalls, can ward off the boxing bug.

The hard-hitting Argentine, who hasn’t fought since his second bout against Mayweather in 2014, is planning a comeback fight against 47-year-old kickboxer Jorge Acero Cali in early April, according to reports. The fight will be set for five three-minute rounds at a catch weight of 85 kilograms (roughly 187 pounds), or more than 40 pounds over his last fighting weight. An announcement is planned for this Friday.

Maidana’s manager, Ernesto Ricci told the Argentine media outlet Telam, according to BoxingScene.com, that the fight is the former welterweight titleholder’s way of saying goodbye to his fans.

“Maidana returns to boxing because he accepted the challenge of ‘Acero’ Cali,” Ricci said. “They have been trading messages and videos since January of this year, before Marcos left for the United States to prepare for the return that did not happen. This is serious. … (The fight) “is a way to say goodbye to the fans of Argentina, something he could not do. With Marcos, nothing is ever final. Perhaps when dusting off the gloves he gets bitten by the bug and goes for a world-class opponent. Offers (for high profile fights) are not lacking.”

It was reported in February that he would end his retirement to sign a contract with Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions in a bid to face the top welterweights. But Maidana backtracked a few months later as be started training in Las Vegas, citing his “lost hunger” for the sport.

Maidana last fought on Sept. 13, 2014, when he lost a unanimous decision to Mayweather in their rematch.
