UFC free fight: Marcin Tybura TKOs Greg Hardy to cash in $50K Performance of the Night bonus

Watch Marcin Tybura survive Greg Hardy’s early attack to put away the NFL standout in a second-round TKO.

[autotag]Marcin Tybura[/autotag] is arguably in his best career run, at least certainly in the UFC.

This latest streak for the UFC heavyweight veteran includes seven wins and just one defeat. He also has scored two $50,000 Performance of the Night bonuses, with the first coming in December 2020.

Back at UFC Fight Night 183, Tybura put away former NFL standout Greg Hardy in a second-round TKO. He did have to endure a tough first round where Hardy connected plenty, but Tybura would eventually figure out Hardy to take him down and then put him away.

You can watch Tybura’s win over Hardy in the video above.

Tybura returns to the octagon this Saturday in the main event of UFC Fight Night 224 at The O2 in London. He takes on rising contender Tom Aspinall in a key heavyweight bout.

In this 7-1 run, Tybura (24-7 MMA, 11-6 UFC) has defeated notable names such as Ben Rothwell, Hardy, Blagoy Ivanov, Walt Harris and others. His lone defeat came in 2021 against Russia’s Alexander Volkov.

Aspinall (12-3 MMA, 5-1 UFC), on the other hand, hasn’t fought since losing his undefeated record in the UFC against Curtis Blaydes in a fight where he suffered a knee injury 15 seconds into the very first round.  That fight took place in July also in London. Prior to the knee injury, Aspinall was on an eight-fight winning streak.

UFC Fight Night 224’s Marcin Tybura: Tom Aspinall main event my toughest heavyweight test yet

Marcin Tybura sees Tom Aspinall as the sternest test of his career in the UFC Fight Night 224 main event in London.

LONDON – [autotag]Marcin Tybura[/autotag] sees [autotag]Tom Aspinall[/autotag] as the sternest test of his career.

Tybura (24-7 MMA, 11-6 UFC) meets Aspinall (12-3 MMA, 5-1 UFC) in Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 224 headliner at The O2 in London. The event streams on ESPN+.

Tybura has fought the likes of former heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum, former title challenger Derrick Lewis and former champ Andrei Arlovski, but sees rising contender Aspinall as his biggest threat yet.

“Absolutely, yeah,” Tybura told reporters at Thursday’s UFC Fight Night 224 media day. “No doubt, he’s my toughest opponent in my career.”

Aspinall is heading into his third straight main event, but has never gone past Round 2. Tybura wonders how Aspinall will do in the championship rounds, but isn’t banking on the fight getting there.

“The key is, for sure, to drag him into deep waters,” Tybura said. “I don’t know about going to the further rounds – it’s something unknown for sure, how Tom will look like in the third, fourth or fifth round.

“But I’m not sticking to the plan that he will get tired and I will finish him. I just want to go hard right from the beginning, because if I want to make him tired, I have to get tired, too, and I don’t want to just stay there and wait for him to get tired.”

Tybura sees a win giving him Aspinall’s spot in the UFC’s top-five heavyweight rankings, but knows he’ll likely have to win one more before he gets his first shot at gold.

“I’m hoping it puts me in the top five,” Tybura said. “But probably I will get another fight to get the title fight. I look at it realistically, so I will probably need another fight to get the chance at the belt.”

Tom Aspinall returns from year-long injury layoff to headline UFC London vs. Marcin Tybura

After a full year on the shelf, UFC standout Tom Aspinall is ready to return in London.

After a full year on the shelf, UFC standout [autotag]Tom Aspinall[/autotag] is ready to return.

Aspinall, No. 5 in the official UFC heavyweight rankings, has been booked to headline the promotion’s Fight Night event July 22 at The O2 in London, where he will take on No. 10 [autotag]Marcin Tybura[/autotag]. UFC president Dana White announced the fight booking Wednesday on social media.

U.K.’s Aspinall, 30, will step into the octagon for the first time since last July, almost exactly one year to the day that he suffered a freak knee injury in his headlining fight with Curtis Blaydes also at The O2. Aspinall injured his knee after landing some leg kicks on Blaydes, which caused his knee to buckle and gave him an injury TKO loss after just 15 seconds. Aspinall underwent surgery shortly after and has been working to return ever since.

Prior to the freak incident, Aspinall (12-3 MMA, 5-1 UFC) was on a nine-fight winning streak, which included his first five fights in the UFC, all finishes, as he was rapidly establishing himself as a title contender in the division.

Tybura, 37, has won seven of his past eight and is on a two-fight winning streak against Alexandr Romanov and Blagoy Ivanov, both decisions.

Tybura’s lone defeat in that stretch was a decision to Alexander Volkov, whom Aspinall submitted in the first round.

With the addition, here is the updated UFC London card on July 22:

  • Tom Aspinall vs. Marcin Tybura
  • Molly McCann vs. Julija Stoliarenko
  • Yanal Ashmouz vs. Chris Duncan
  • Jai Herbert vs. Fares Ziam
  • Davey Grant vs. Daniel Marcos
  • Mick Parkin vs. Jamal Pogues
  • Joel Alvarez vs. Marc Diakiese
  • Pannie Kianzad vs. Ketlen Vieira
  • Jonny Parsons vs. Danny Roberts
  • Josh Culibao vs. Lerone Murphy

Now recovered from knee injury, Tom Aspinall eyes summer return against ‘big Polish dummy’ Marcin Tybura

Tom Aspinall is targeting a return to the UFC this summer.

LONDON – [autotag]Tom Aspinall[/autotag] says he’s good to go.

The UFC heavyweight contender revealed he’s now recovered from his knee injury sustained in his last outing. Aspinall (12-3 MMA, 5-1 UFC) had to undergo surgery last year after tearing his MCL and meniscus, as well as suffering damage to his ACL, in a TKO loss to Curtis Blaydes last July at UFC Fight Night 208. It was a freak injury, as the British fighter blew out his knee 15 seconds into the bout.

Now healthy, Aspinall wants to return to the crime scene and resume his career.

“The knee is fantastic now,” Aspinall said at the Q&A hosted on Thursday, part of the UFC 286 fight week. “I’m back in training. Hey, listen. I just want to get one thing straight. We need to secure another U.K. card for this year, and I got that big Polish dummy calling me out online. So if Marcin Tybura wants it, let’s bring it back to the U.K. this summer. Come on, please.”

[lawrence-related id=2564546]

Prior to the unfortunate injury, Aspinall was on a hot streak. He had eight consecutive wins, with five of those being under the UFC banner.

The 29-year-old was nearing a title shot entering his bout against Curtis Blaydes last summer, and he wants to get back on track. That’s why the bout against [autotag]Marcin Tybura[/autotag] makes the most sense for him.

“Well at the moment, there are not many free guys in the top 10, everyone is matched,” Aspinall explained. “As far as I can see, he’s the only guy who’s willing to take the fight. He said it verbally. And if someone says publicly that they want to fight me, of course I want to fight. I’m not backing down from no one. We’re two European guys, let’s do it in the U.K.”

Marcin Tybura ready to step in for Jon Jones or Ciryl Gane at UFC 285

Although it didn’t go down quite the way he hoped, Marcin Tybura wasn’t in position to complain about his Saturday win.

LAS VEGAS – Although it didn’t go down quite the way he hoped, [autotag]Marcin Tybura[/autotag] wasn’t in position to complain about his Saturday win.

Tybura (24-7 MMA, 11-6 UFC) outworked Blagoy Ivanov (19-5 MMA, 3-4 UFC) on the UFC Fight Night 218 main card in Las Vegas. It gave him back-to-back wins after a loss to Alexander Volkov in 2021, and with seven wins in his past eight, he’s proving to be a threat at heavyweight.

“My mindset was to do a little bit more, but a win is a win,” Tybura said at his post-fight news conference. “He’s really tough to start to close distance. He’s a very solid guy and it’s hard to look well against him. I think I was able to outstrike him at least one round and I handled him on the ground.”

The win may not have Tybura next in line for a shot at the title, but he certainly now is in the mix.

The UFC’s heavyweight division got particularly interesting a few weeks ago when the promotion announced champion Francis Ngannou is gone from the company. His vacant belt will be up for grabs at UFC 285 in March between former longtime light heavyweight champ Jon Jones and former interim champ Ciryl Gane. Jones will be fighting for the first time in more than three years.

Tybura said if anything happens to one of those two, he’ll be ready for a call.

“If someone pulls out of the main event in a month in the heavyweight title fight, I can step in.”

But barring that, Tybura said he thinks Jones can return from his lengthy layoff with a win.

“It’s hard for me to say for sure because I don’t know how Jon Jones will perform after three years off, and changing a weight class,” Tybura said. “But I see him as the GOAT, so I think he’ll come back as his prime time and he’ll win the fight.”

Check out Tybura’s full post-fight news conference in the video above.
