Former UFC champ Jan Blachowicz returns vs. Carlos Ulberg in London

Jan Blachowicz has been out since 2023 due to a shoulder injury, but he returns in a big fight at UFC London.

A big fight in the UFC light heavyweight division is headed to London.

Former champion [autotag]Jan Blachowicz[/autotag] returns from a near-two-year layoff as he battles [autotag]Carlos Ulberg[/autotag] at UFC Fight Night 255. Promotion officials announced the bout Tuesday. The event takes place March 22 at O2 Arena.

Blachowicz (29-10-1 MMA, 12-7-1 UFC) has not competed since a loss to Alex Pereira at UFC 291 in July 2023. The bout was Pereira’s first at 205 in the UFC, and was a closely contested split decision win for “Poatan.” Blachowicz was supposed to compete at UFC 297 in January vs. Aleksandar Rakic, but withdrew due to a shoulder injury that required surgery.

Ulberg (12-1 MMA, 7-1 UFC) competed less than three weeks ago at UFC Fight Night 248. He defeated Volkan Oezdemir by unanimous decision, which extended his winning streak to seven. Ulberg has not lost since his UFC debut, which was a TKO defeat to Kennedy Nzechukwu.

In addition to the light heavyweight contender fight, promotion officials also announced Tuesday a heavyweight bout between ranked fighters [autotag]Mick Parkin[/autotag] (10-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) and [autotag]Marcin Tybura[/autotag] (26-9 MMA, 13-8 UFC).

With the addition, the UFC Fight Night 255 lineup includes:

  • Jan Blachowicz vs. Carlos Ulberg
  • Mick Parkin vs. Marcin Tybura
  • Shauna Bannon vs. Puja Tomar
  • Christian Leroy Duncan vs. Andrey Pulayev

UFC 309 medical suspensions: Stipe Miocic out for 60 days, several others up to three months

From one week to three months, check out the full list of medical suspensions handed out following UFC 309 in New York.

Every fighter who competed this past Saturday at UFC 309 has been given a medical suspension following their bouts.

Jhonata Diniz, Mickey Gall and Bassil Hafez were knocked out in their fights and were among four fighters who received 90-day suspensions, which was the longest period issued. The fourth fighter who received 90 days was James Llontop, who went the distance with Mauricio Ruffy, but was on the receiving end of multiple damaging strikes over three rounds.

The event, which took place at Madison Square Garden in New York, was headlined by a heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and former champion Stipe Miocic. Although he announced his retirement following the main event, Miocic was given a 60-day suspension for his TKO loss to Jones.

Wednesday, MMA Junkie acquired a full list of medical suspensions from the New York State Department of State, which oversaw the event. Check out the full list below. The suspensions ranged from a 7-day mandatory rest period to 90 days. Any fighter given 30-90 days may return sooner if cleared by a doctor (unless noted otherwise).

Updated records: Tybura (26-9 MMA, 13-8 UFC), Diniz (8-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC)

“It was (what I expected). I wasn’t so sure if it would be easy to mount him, but it was – although he was really tough. He was punching even from this from his back, and he was still dangerous out there, and he was trying to sweep me all the time. It was really hard to stabilize him. I got the mount position pretty easy, but he was tough there. He was really tough.”

Tybura on short notice prep

“It was two weeks’ notice (after Diniz took the fight). I was doing some training. I was sparring, also, because I have other friends who are preparing for fights. So I decidee to take it, and the last two weeks we went really hard on the training – and that was it.”

Tybura on what he wants next

“Probably a fresh opponent would be the nicest, but I don’t have names. I don’t have a date. It’s hard to say because this one came up and I agreed (at the last minute), so I’m really willing to wait for what comes and then decide.”

UFC 309 video: Marcin Tybura unleashes hellbows on Jhonata Diniz to prompt doctor stoppage

Marcin Tybura handed Jhonata Diniz his first professional loss on the UFC 309 prelims at Madison Square Garden.

[autotag]Marcin Tybura[/autotag]’s vicious ground-and-pound striking led to a stoppage against a previously unbeaten Jhonata Diniz.

On the UFC 309 prelims at Madison Square Garden in New York, Tybura (26-9 MMA, 13-8 UFC) returned to the win column after causing severe damage to the face of Diniz (8-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC). The TKO stoppage came by doctor intervention after the conclusion of Round 2.

Tybura reached full mount and rained down a series of vicious elbows to the face of Diniz, opening multiple cuts. With short time remaining in the second frame, Diniz did his best to reach up and mitigate the damage, but Tybura continued to connect with multiple elbow strikes.

Between rounds, the cageside doctor assessed Diniz, and determined he was not fit to continue. Diniz protested the stoppage, but there was no changing the decision.

With the win, Tybura bounced back from a loss to Serghei Spivac in August to pick up his second victory of 2024. Diniz walks away with the first loss of his professional career.

Analyzing Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 61 odds between Marcin Tybura vs. Serghei Spivac, with MMA picks and predictions.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

In a 5-round heavyweight bout in the main event, Marcin Tybura and Serghei Spivac meet Saturday at UFC on ESPN 61 — also known as UFC Vegas 95 — at the UFC APEX. Let’s analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the UFC on ESPN 61: Tybura vs. Spivac odds, and make our expert picks and predictions.

The prelims begin 5 p.m. ET on ESPN/ESPN+, while the main card starts at 7 p.m. ET, also on ESPN/ESPN+.

Records: Tybura (25-8-0) | Spivac (16-4-0)

Tybura suffered a 1st-round KO/TKO loss to Tom Aspinall in the main event in a Fight Night July 22, 2023. He rebounded in the main event against Tai Tuivasa in a 1st-round submission win March 16. Tybura has managed 4 stoppages in the past 7 fights, although he has gone the distance 6 times in the past 10 outings.

This is actually the 2nd meeting at the UFC level between these fighters. Tybura picked up a unanimous-decision victory Feb. 29, 2020.

Spivac, aka the Polar Bear, is looking for the bounceback after getting knocked out in Round 2 by Ciryl Gane in a main event Sept. 2, 2023. That comes on the heels of a Round 1 submission in a main event Feb. 4, 2023. Each of his past 5 fights have finished inside the distance.

The 38-year-old Tybura has an ever-so-slight 3.60-to-3.54 significant strikes landed per minute advantage, while Spivac has a 62.06% significant strikes accuracy percentage. Spivac also has an impressive 4.56 takedown average while posting a 64.29% takedown accuracy percentage and 0.51 submission average.

UFC on ESPN 61: Tybura vs. Spivac picks and predictions

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

SPIVAC (-156) is a strong play as a moderate favorite in this rematch.

Tybura (+132) won the 1st meeting back in Feb. 2020, but that’s over 4 years ago, and now Tybura is in his upper 30s with a lot of tread on the tires.

Spivac will be trying to get Tybura to the mat early and often, as he is the far more superior grappler.

SPIVAC BY KO/TKO (+195) is worth a look in the “Method of Victory”, as 4 of his past 5 fights have ended via knockout, with 2 wins and 2 losses by way of the method.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 3.5 ROUNDS (-124) is worth a play. Neither of these fighters have been distance fighters, especially lately.

Each of the past 5 fights for Spivac have finished inside the distance, and 3 of the bouts in the span haven’t made it out of Round 1.

For Tybura, each of his past 2 bouts have also ended in Round 1, although 3 of the past 5 fights have gone the distance, so don’t get too carried away.

However, playing No (-215): Will the fight go the distance? is a little on the expensive side, so PASS on that.
