Nico Iamaleava named Manning Award Star of the Week

Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava named Manning Award Star of the Week.

Tennessee redshirt freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava was named Manning Award Star of the Week after his performance against North Carolina State in Week 2 of the 2024 college football season.

He was one of eight quarterbacks recognized with the honor given by the Manning Award sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Iamaleava, making his third career start against the Wolfpack in the Duke’s Mayo Classic, accounted for 276 yards of total offense and three touchdowns in Tennessee’s 51-10 victory.

He completed 16-of-21 passing attempts for 211 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Iamaleava also totaled 65 rushing yards and one touchdown on eight attempts.

He led the Vols to a victory over a ranked opponent for a second time in three starts. Week 23 marked the second game where Iamaleava recorded at least one passing touchdown and one rushing touchdown.

Alabama QB Jalen Milroe named to both the Manning and Unitas Golden Arm watch list

Two major CFB awards name Alabama QB Jalen Milroe to preseason watch list.

After Nick Saban announced his retirement from college football in January, the Alabama Crimson Tide roster suffered several losses to the transfer portal. But one guy who decided to stay in Tuscaloosa to be a part of the Kalen DeBoer era was quarterback Jalen Milroe.

Milroe and the Crimson Tide suffered an ugly Week 2 loss to the Texas Longhorns a year ago, and consequently, Milroe was benched the following week against the USF Bulls. He earned the starting job back in Week 4 against a top-15 Ole Miss squad, picked up a key win, and never looked back.

The Crimson Tide went on to win the SEC Championship and earn an eight-CFP berth. As for Milroe, he finished No. 6 in the Heisman voting, which is pretty remarkable given where he was after the USF game. Heading into this season, Milroe is the highest-returning Heisman vote-getter from last season with the top five guys all departing for the NFL.

DeBoer turned former Washington Huskies QB Michael Penix Jr. into a top ten pick, so it will be very fun to watch Milroe progress in this QB friendly offense. All the tools are around Milroe for him to have a massive season, and as a result he has been named to both the Manning Award and Unitas Golden Arm Award watch lists.

The Manning Award is presented annually to the best quarterback in college football with LSU Tiger’s Jayden Daniels winning the award in 2023. Mac Jones (2020) and Bryce Young (2021) are Alabama’s only ever recipients.

The Unitas Golden Arm Award is awarded annually to the nation’s top upperclassmen QB. LSU’s Daniels also won this award in 2023. Alabama has had three winners ever in Jay Barker (1994), AJ McCarron (2013) and Mac Jones (2020).

LSU QB Jayden Daniels wins the Manning Award

Jayden Daniels is off to the NFL. But first, he had one more collegiate award to win.

LSU quarterback [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] has moved on and is now preparing for the 2024 NFL draft, where he could be a top-three pick. But in the meantime, he had one more collegiate award to win.

On Tuesday, Daniels was named the winner of the Manning Award, named after the prominent Manning quarterback family and given to the top quarterback in the nation annually. Daniels becomes the third Tiger to win the award, joining [autotag]JaMarcus Russell[/autotag] in 2006 and [autotag]Joe Burrow[/autotag] in 2019.

Daniels won a near clean sweep of the quarterback awards, missing out on only the Maxwell as he also won the Heisman Trophy in 2023 after leading the nation in total yards, touchdowns and passer rating.

Daniels is seen as one of the top quarterback prospects in the draft and is essentially a lock to go in the first round.

Dillon Gabriel named finalist for Manning Award

After his career year, Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Dillon Gabriel was named a finalist for the Manning Award.

It’s been a banner year for [autotag]Dillon Gabriel[/autotag]. The Oklahoma Sooners quarterback had a career year that culminated in a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 first-team selection.

Gabriel set career highs in completion percentage, yards, and total touchdowns. He accounted for more than 4,000 yards and 42 total touchdowns.

His career year has Gabriel in line for the Manning Award after being named a finalist on Thursday.

In its 20th year, the Manning Award honors the best quarterback in the country and takes into account a player’s bowl performance. The Award was created by the All-State Sugar Bowl in honor of Archie, Peyton, and Eli Manning.

In his career year in 2023, Gabriel was named the Davey O’Brien National QB of the Week twice, Maxwell Award Player of the Week, Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week, and was a three-time Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week.

Two former Sooners have won the award. [autotag]Baker Mayfield[/autotag] won the Manning Award in 2017 and [autotag]Kyler Murray[/autotag] won it in 2018.

Dillon Gabriel came to Oklahoma after spending the first three seasons of his career at UCF. Initially, he looked to be headed to UCLA in the transfer portal after the 2021 season, but after [autotag]Caleb Williams[/autotag] left for USC, Gabriel switched course to join Jeff Lebby, his former offensive coordinator at UCF, in Norman.

Here are some of the best photos from Dillon Gabriel’s career year in 2023.

Jayden Daniels named Manning Award finalist

The award nominations continue to rack up for LSU’s star quarterback.

The award nominations continue to roll in for LSU quarterback [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag].

The Heisman contender has now been named a finalist for the Manning Award, annually given to the best quarterback in the country.

This recognition comes on the heels of Daniels being named a finalist for the Maxwell Award, which is annually given to the best player in the country.

It comes as no surprise. Daniels steadily built hype throughout the year, putting up historic numbers and grabbing the sport’s attention.

LSU’s taken it upon itself to give Daniels a massive media push ahead of Heisman trophy voting with Daniels currently sitting second on the odds board behind Oregon’s Bo Nix.

Nix joins Daniels as a Manning Award finalist, as does Georgia’s Carson Beck and Washington’s Michael Penix Jr, among others,

Daniels has thrown for 3,812 yards and ran for 1,134 more, totaling 50 touchdowns in the process and posting one of the best passer ratings the sport’s ever seen.

Drake Maye picks up two recognitions for Week 6 performance

The UNC football team is 5-0. Quarterback Drake Maye, who earned two recognitions for Week 6 performance, is a big reason behind 5-0.

The UNC football team is off to a 5-0 start, its best since the 1997 campaign when it finished 11-1.

There’s seemingly a new unit that shines each week – the running game in Weeks 1 and 2, defense in Weeks 1, 3, 4 and 5, plus quarterback Drake Maye in Carolina’s last three outings.

The latter picked up two recognitions, being named to the Davey O’Brien Great 8 list and a Manning Award Star, for his absolute obliteration of the Syracuse defense in a 40-7 Tar Heel victory. Maye completed 33 passes for 442 yards and three touchdowns – one each to Bryson Nesbit, John Copenhaver and Kobe Paysour – with his yardage total just six yards off his collegiate career-high.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CyLzTN3rLPP/?hl=en

Maye was joined on the Great 8 list by a couple of gunslingers you might recognize – LSU’s Jayden Daniels, Oklahoma’s Dillon Gabriel, Alabama’s Jalen Milroe, UGA’s Carson Beck and a former ACC quarterback – Oregon State’s D.J. Uiagalelei. The Davey O’Brien Award is given annually, at the college football season’s conclusion, to the nation’s top quarterback.

Maye also found himself on the Manning Award list with Daniels, Gabriel and Beck. The Manning Award is similar to the Davey O’Brien Award, except the winner doesn’t get announced until the conclusion of Bowl Season.

Is there anything Maye can’t do? He can destroy a defense with his rocket arm and precision, or evade defenders by juking them out and taking off for the open field.

Maye and his Tar Heel teammates have an even tougher test on Saturday, Oct. 14, welcoming the Miami Hurricanes to town for a primetime matchup on ABC.

Dillon Gabriel added to the 2023 Manning Award watch list

Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel was named to the Manning Award watch list, given to the nation’s top quarterback.

The Oklahoma Sooners are just 18 days away from the start of the [autotag]2023 college football season[/autotag]. As we approach the start of the season, more and more award watch lists begin to surface, including several Sooners.

This time it is the Manning Award watch list. This award was created in honor of Archie, Peyton, and Eli Manning. It is the only college football quarterback award that includes the candidates’ bowl performances in its balloting; because of that, it is presented annually following the completion of the bowl season.

Oklahoma’s returning gunslinger [autotag]Dillon Gabriel[/autotag] is on the award’s watch list. Gabriel is coming off a season in which he threw for 3,168 yards, 25 touchdowns, and only six interceptions. He did so while missing a game and a half.

But Gabriel returns more confident this offseason. It’s being reported that there seems to be a new level of confidence and fire under Gabriel this year. Maybe that is just from being more confident, or maybe it’s because he understands five-star [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag] is waiting in the wings.

Either way, it’s never a bad thing to play with that chip-on-your-shoulder mentality.

This award is one that has been kind to Oklahoma. Former Sooners and Heisman Trophy Winners [autotag]Baker Mayfield[/autotag] and [autotag]Kyler Murray[/autotag] took home the awards in 2017 and 2018. Gabriel hopes for a big year and to add his name to this list with the other prestigious passer in college football history.

Jayden Daniels named to preseason Manning Award watch list

Jayden Daniels is expected to have a huge year for the Tigers.

The preseason accolades continue to rack up for LSU quarterback [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] ahead of what could be a huge final season as a college football player.

Daniels was named to the preseason watch list for the Manning Award on Tuesday, which is given annually to the most outstanding quarterback in the country. Daniels was also named to the preseason watch lists for the Davey O’Brien and Maxwell Awards.

A transfer addition from Arizona State last offseason, Daniels became one of the SEC’s top quarterbacks and turned in the most prolific rushing season for a QB in LSU history. Now, he’s expected to take another leap.

If he lives up to the lofty preseason expectations, LSU could have one of the most effective offenses in college football with a talented offensive line and a lot of weapons at the skill positions.

Uiagalelei among QBs added to Manning Award Watch List

Despite a less than stellar Week 8 performance, quarterback DJ Uiagalelei picked up yet another watch list honor.

Via Allstate Sugar Bowl Press Release:

The Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, announced 12 additions to its 2022 Watch List on Friday. Finalists for the honor will be determined by a select panel of national media covering college football, as well as each of the Mannings. That list will be released on Thursday, December 1 and the winner is scheduled to be announced following the College Football Playoff National Championship.

The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates’ bowl performances in its balloting.

After announcing 30 quarterbacks to its preseason Watch List, the Manning Award opted to increase its spotlighted players based on the many outstanding performances during the first half of the year. While these players have been added to the Watch List, every quarterback in the nation remains eligible to win the honor.

The additions to the Watch List come from eight different conferences with the Pac-12 leading the way with four quarterbacks. The newcomers include seven seniors, two juniors, two sophomores and one freshman.

In its first 18 years, the Manning Award has recognized the top names in college football. It has honored quarterbacks from 13 different schools and from four different conferences. The Southeastern Conference (Bryce Young, Joe Burrow, Mac Jones, Johnny Manziel, Cam Newton, JaMarcus Russell and Tim Tebow) leads the way with seven Manning Award honorees, while the Big 12 Conference (Kyler Murray, Baker Mayfield, Vince Young, Colt McCoy and Robert Griffin III) has had five winners. The Atlantic Coast Conference (Deshaun Watson twice, Matt Ryan and Jameis Winston) has had four Manning Award winners. Alabama (Bryce Young and Jones) joins LSU (Burrow and Russell), Oklahoma (Murray and Mayfield) and Texas (McCoy and Vince Young) as the only schools with two different winners.

All the Manning Award winners follow in the footsteps of the Mannings themselves. In college, Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning combined for over 25,000 passing yards and 201 touchdowns while playing in 10 bowl games and earning four bowl MVP awards. Archie was the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft, while both Peyton and Eli were selected No. 1 overall.
