Watch: Manasquan applauds as Camden, the team that controversially knocked them out of the playoffs, wins the state championship

Manasquan boys attend the state finals to watch Camden win the championship.

The Manasquan boys basketball team was in attendance on Saturday afternoon for the state championship, just days removed from a controversial semifinal loss in the state semifinals.

The NJSIAA, the governing body for New Jersey high school sports, said this week that the wrong call was made in Camden’s (Camden, New Jersey) 46-45 win over Manasquan (Manasquan, New Jersey) in the state semifinals. Despite this fact, Manasquan stood and respectfully applauded Camden’s win in the state tournament.

It was an impressive display of sportsmanship, even as Manasquan had to feel that they belonged on the court at Rutgers on Saturday afternoon.

On Tuesday night, Manasquan had an apparent game-winner waived off by the game officials, a decision that gave Camden the win in the state semifinals. Video replay confirmed the original call by the officiating crew that the putback from Griffin Linstra of Manasquan had beaten the buzzer.

The original call, that Linstra made the shot in time to beat Camden, should have stood, giving Manasquan the win.

Instead, inexplicably, the basket was overturned and Camden was heading to Jersey Mike’s Arena on the Rutgers campus for the state championship.

On Wednesday, the NJSIAA acknowledged the officiating error in the game.

Mistake acknowledged but result won’t change for Manasquan HS

Manasquan will not be given a deserved victory over Camden

Manasquan should have upset Camden on Tuesday.

The NJSIAA acknowledged that in a statement on Wednesday, saying the officials admitted they blew the call at the end of the playoff game against Camden.

The basket should have counted. However, it was waved off after review and that is the way it will stand forever.

Watch: Controversial ending to a New Jersey state playoff game

New Jersey high school basketball game ends in controversy.

The internet is rarely united on anything these days. But social media is almost universally united about an official’s call in a New Jersey high school playoff game.

Officials waved off what appeared to be the winning basket on Tuesday night in what would become Camden’s (Camden, New Jersey) 46-45 win over Manasquan (Manasquan, New Jersey).

Junior forward Griffin Linstra of Manasquan seems to have put back a shot before the final buzzer for what should have been a win for the Warriors.

In the last seconds of the game, Manasquan went the distance of the court with Linstra collecting a rebound off of a teammate’s missed jump shot. The forward’s shot left his fingertips before the buzzer signaled the end of the game.

Manasquan’s celebrations were short-lived. After a delay that included the officials huddling to discuss the call, the apparent game-winning shot was waved off.

Camden won, even as the video seems to indicate that the shot from Linstra was put up before the buzzer.

With the win, Camden advances in the state playoffs. The school is perenially one of the top programs in New Jersey and is often nationally ranked.

The game was played at Central Regional High School in Bayville, New Jersey.
