‘Humble’ Malik Willis endeared himself to Liberty teammates, coaches immediately

Former Auburn and current Liberty quarterback Malik Willis lit up college football last season. What can he do for an encore?

“He’s one of the most humble players I’ve ever coached.”

That is the first thing Liberty co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Kent Austin has to say about his star quarterback Malik Willis.

I’m visiting Austin during a recent trip to Lynchburg and want to find out more about Willis. The Flames are one of the hottest topics in college football following a 10-1 season and victory in the Cure Bowl against previously undefeated Coastal Carolina.

Most of the attention, and deservedly so, is about Willis. The Auburn transfer thrived under the guidance of Austin and head coach Hugh Freeze, throwing for 2,260 yards and 20 touchdowns to just six interceptions while using his legs for 944 yards and 14 more scores.

Arriving at Liberty, Willis never played the big-time transfer card either.

“He’s really, really endearing to his teammates,” Austin said. “And that’s not in any way a manipulative or fake way. He’s just genuinely that guy. So he pulls people in right with his endearing nature and they know what he’s going through, his teammates know that Malik’s going to play as hard as he can to help them win the football game.”

Endearing, sure. But how would Willis’ success translate to the field once real-live competition began? Pretty darn good. It took him no time to adjust to his first starting role in three years.

The Atlanta native began the 2020 season by helping the Flames pull off an upset at Western Kentucky, throwing for 133 yards and rushing for a team-high 168 yards and three touchdowns. Questions, however, still remained how accurate of a passer he could be.

Austin has, and still is, working with his protégé on that.

“I think he has more natural talent as a passer,” Austin said. “He just needed to develop that a little bit more in particular, with respect to a couple of fundamental flaws that he had. And the thing about Malik is he’s really coachable and he really, really, really wants to be great. He’s got a strong desire for that. So we just had to work on a few things with respect to his mechanics, that at least the last part of his skill became more consistent on a step-by-step basis.”

A lot of those flaws disappeared and his arm became a bigger asset. On October 24 in a matchup against Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Willis completed 77.4 percent of his passes for 345 yards and six touchdowns. Now, he was the complete package and, suddenly, became a dark horse Heisman Trophy candidate.

His accuracy, not the yards or touchdowns, was what impressed Austin.

“The quarterback, the number one thing you have to have as a quarterback in our opinion is, is to be a great decision maker because if you don’t throw to the right guy the probability keeps going down and with respect to poor decisions.”

Learning not to panic was also a key contribution to Willis’ development.

“Malik will need to learn how to move and get himself in a position to deliver the ball without being mechanically out of whack, if that makes sense. So know the difference between moving in the pocket and keeping his hips and transferring his weight properly and getting on top of the ball and getting rid of some of that sidearm delivery stuff that he had as opposed to committing to run and then trying to recover for a pass, that’s what he used to do.

“And so he’d get his body all out of whack, cause he was looking for escape lanes and then he’d realized, ‘Oh, wait a minute. I still got a pocket. I just needed to move.'”

Being the star of the offense at quarterback, Willis also became a leader, but not in how you would expect. Austin says Willis is not a “rah-rah guy,” but isn’t about to change how his quarterback leads on and off the field.

“He’s not going to be a quarterback that’s going to go over there and grab you and get your attention and get in your face. He leads more by example, and he’s got more of a teaching spirit to him. You’ll see him a lot after a series when we’re on the sidelines, he’s there with receivers talking through things to prepare for the next series, talking with the offense alone, with respect to protection and these types of things.

“Because when he’s in a game, a quarterback needs to learn how to, how to remove all the distractions and focus on the very next play and be able to execute the very next play with a great decision and we can handle it. We can handle those types of things easier on the sideline then we can during play. Cause we got to focus on the next play and make sure that we stay on the field and move the sticks.”

The expectations are sky high for Willis going into his senior season. He was recently named the Dudley Award Winner which goes to the best college football player each year in the state of Virginia and, in a piece for The Athletic, Bruce Feldman expects him to be the breakout quarterback for next year’s NFL draft.

Don’t expect that hype and attention to affect Willis, though.

“It’s very authentic with him,” Austin said.

Malik Willis breaks Liberty record for touchdowns, rushing yards in a season

Malik Willis has now broken two school records as Liberty battles Coastal Carolina in the Cure Bowl.

Malik Willis has been one of the breakout stars of the 2020 college football season, leading Liberty to a 9-1 regular season record while putting 20 passing touchdowns and 10 rushing touchdowns in those 10 games.

After scoring three more rushing touchdowns in the ongoing Cure Bowl against Coastal Carolina, the former Auburn quarterback now holds the Flames’ record for most touchdowns responsible for in a season at 33. He also broke the record for rushing yards in a season for a Liberty player with 855. Both records were held by Mike Brown, who is now the wide receivers coach at Cincinnati.

Brown congratulated Willis for breaking his records:

Willis’ three rushing touchdowns so far is also a Cure Bowl record.

Report: Malik Willis tests positive for COVID-19

The former Auburn quarterback has helped lead Liberty to a top-25 ranking and 9-1 record.

Liberty will likely be without former Auburn quarterback Malik Willis for the big game against Coastal Carolina on Saturday.

On Wednesday, Sea of Red reported that the star quarterback has tested positive for COVID-19 and will more than probably miss the top-25 matchup.

From the report:

This obviously puts Willis as a big question mark for Saturday’s game pending the results of additional tests. No. 25 Liberty (9-1) is scheduled to play No. 14 Coastal Carolina (9-0) Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. on ESPNU. ESPN’s College GameDay announced Monday it will broadcast Saturday from Coastal Carolina ahead of the big matchup of the former Big South rivals. The Chanticleers opened as 7 point favorites but the line has moved to 10.5 in some books as of Wednesday morning. From all indications, it seems that Liberty is doing everything it can to still play in the big game Saturday.

This season, Willis has completed 151 of 236 passes for 2,040 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions. He also leads the team in rushing with 807 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on 120 carries. The recent addition to the Maxwell Award Watch List is the only FBS player to rank among the nation’s top 15 for both passing touchdowns and rushing touchdowns. He leads all of FBS quarterbacks in rushing.

Malik Willis had a tough game last Saturday, throwing three picks against N.C. State as Liberty lost its first game of the season, 15-14, to the Wolfpack.

He’s making up for it this Saturday as it didn’t take him long to find the end zone.

We are here with your latest Malik Willis update.

After putting up four touchdowns (two each on the ground and through the air) through the first two quarters-plus, the Liberty quarterback dropped back on the first play of the Flames’ second possession of the second half and threw an absolute dime for an 84-yard touchdown pass.

Liberty HC Hugh Freeze on Malik Willis: ‘He’s our guy’

Malik Willis has accounted for 19 total touchdowns for the 7-0 Liberty Flames this season.

Malik Willis didn’t have his best game of the season against Virginia Tech, fumbling the ball four times and losing it twice, but he did come through in the clutch as Liberty upset the Hokies 38-35 in Lane Stadium.

In the end, Willis threw for 217 yards on 20-of-30 passing and three touchdowns while also rushing for 108 yards and a score.

“He’s our guy,” Liberty head coach Hugh Freeze said after the game. “We’ve talked to him about ball security. He didn’t make the right decisions today, and then he tries to do crazy things with the ball sometimes. I thought we did a great job of managing the clock in the second quarter. I thought we got some really good plays to call down there if we can ever get down there and I thought we were going to run the clock out and go in there at the half up. Obviously that didn’t work out because we turned it over. I told these kids all week long, we’re going to climb this cliff today and not worry about the scoreboard until the clock was on 0:00. Malik played like that and he played a solid second half, and he made plays for us when he had to.”

After the Hokies had driven down the field to tie the game with less than a minute left, Willis and the Flames offense went to work, going 42 yards in less than 50 seconds to set up the game-winning field goal attempt. The first attempt was blocked by the Hokies and returned for a touchdown but Tech coach Justin Fuente had called a timeout.

This is where Liberty and Freeze took advantage of a soft Hokie defense.

With eight second left, Willis threw a short eight-yard completion to CJ Yarbrough to cut the yardage of the next field goal attempt to 51 yards. Alex Barbir did not miss, nailing it straight through the uprights to make the Flames 7-0.

Asked if he was surprised and how well Willis, an Auburn transfer, has been playing so far this season, Freeze responded no.

“No, I’m not surprised,” Freeze said. “I think quarterbacks enjoy playing in our system. We fit Malik’s skill set very well and obviously he knew my offense in the SEC. I think that’s why he chose us because he saw it first hand in that league and he was a part of it.”

Through seven games, Willis has thrown for 1,339 yards and 12 touchdowns while rushing for 603 yards and seven more scores.

“Malik knows this about me, while I will yell and scream some, he knows that I have the ability to put the ball back in his hands and trust him,” Freeze said. “He’s our guy.”
