Former Penn State wide receiver Malick Meiga announces transfer commitment

Malick Meiga, a former Penn State team captain, has committed to Coastal Carolina out of the transfer portal.

Penn State has already officially said goodbye to a couple of key wide receivers from the 2023 roster by way of the transfer portal. On Wednesday, another former wide receiver officially announced his departure from the program for good with a commitment announcement out of the transfer portal.

[autotag]Malick Meiga[/autotag] announced on his social media account on Wednesday that he has committed to Coastal Carolina.

Meiga was a three-star recruit in Penn State’s Class of 2020 and he played in each of the past three seasons for the Nittany Lions. He is coming off a 2023 season in which he appeared in nine games and caught three passes for 9 yards. He ended his time at Penn State with nine career receptions for 106 yards and one touchdown.

The Montreal native will be a redshirt senior with Coastal Carolina and he will actually have two years of eligibility at his disposal. Meiga qualifies for an extra year of eligibility due to the 2020 season being hit hard by the pandemic, which led to the NCAA granting an extra year of eligibility to student-athletes.

Penn State has also seen KeAndre Lambert-Smith, Dante Cephas, and Cristian Driver all land at other schools out of the transfer portal. Malik McClain has also entered the transfer portal recently and Carmelo Taylor was removed from the roster.

Penn State availability report for Illinois released

Penn State availability report: Daequan Hardy actuive, Harrison Wallace III listed as questionable vs. Illinois

Penn State is about to open up its Big Ten slate on the road at Illinois for a noon eastern kickoff on national TV, and the depth at wide receiver could be a slight concern for the matchup. Penn State’s player availability report for Week 3 against Illinois confirmed the Nittany Lions will be without wide receiver [autotag]Malick Meiga[/autotag] and [autotag]Harrison Wallace III[/autotag] is listed as questionable.

The big news with the latest player availability report from Penn State is cornerback [autotag]Daequan Hardy[/autotag], defensive tackle [autotag]Coziah Izzard[/autotag], and defensive end [autotag]Amin Vanover[/autotag] are all active.

Wallace III is Penn State’s second-leading receiver after the first two games of the season. Wallace is tied for a team-high 10 receptions and has 98 receiving yards.

Meiga has appeared in just one game this season, in which he caught 1 pass for 7 yards. This is the second game in a row Meiga, who contributes mostly on special teams will be out of action.

Penn State awards coveted No. 0 jersey to special teams standout

Penn State continues tradition of awarding the No. 0 jersey to special teams standout for 2023 season.

The No. 0 jersey has officially been handed out to a special teams standout at Penn State. It’s a recent tradition of Penn State under [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] for a player on special teams to wear that jersey number.

For three years it was worn by safety [autotag]Jonathan Sutherland[/autotag]. After his graduation, some wondered if the tradition would continue and who would wear the jersey.

Linebacker [autotag]Dominic DeLuca[/autotag] will be the one wearing No. 0 for the 2023 season. The redshirt sophomore has played a huge role on special teams throughout his career. He joined the program as a walk-on in 2021 and redshirted after appearing in three games.

In 2022, DeLuca appeared in all 13 games on special teams and defense, racking up 29 total tackles. He earned the coaching staff’s Special Teams Player of the Week after he blocked a punt in the game.

Franklin and Penn State awarded him a scholarship before the Rose Bowl game against Utah this past season after sharing the team’s Outstanding Run-On Award with [autotag]Tank Smith[/autotag].

It was previously announced that DeLuca would be one of the six captains for the Nittany Lions this season. He’s joined by wide receiver [autotag]Malick Meiga[/autotag] as special teams captains.

The Pennsylvania native has worked his way into a backup linebacker role and will be on the field at that position in certain spots going forward. But his main contributions to the team will be leading the special teams unit that Franklin has put a lot of emphasis on.

The No. 0 jersey tradition lives on for another season with DeLuca wearing the honor.

2023 Penn State football snapshot profile: No. 4 Malick Meiga

Malick Meiga is one of Penn State’s wide receivers who could step up to a bigger role in 2023.

Going into the 2023 football season, Nittany Lions Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Penn State roster. Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for James Franklin this season.

Next up in this series is a snapshot look at one of Penn State’s wide receivers to watch in 2023, [autotag]Malick Meiga[/autotag]. Meiga is a player fans have wanted to see take some steps forward as a receiver prospect, and that could still be the case in 2023 as Penn State’s passing game looks to find some new contributors hauling in passes this fall. Here is a snapshot look at Meiga heading into the 2023 college football season.

Penn State spring football preview: Wide receivers and tight ends

Who will be the wide receivers and tight ends to watch in Penn State spring football practices this year?

As Penn State gets ready to embark on the 2023 season, the offense will be expected to be the big storyline this fall. With a new starting quarterback taking the spotlight, it should not go without mentioning that the wide receiver position will be instrumental to Penn State’s success this season. And with its top two wide receivers and leading tight end from last season departing the program for the NFL, there is more to figure out on offense than whether or not its new quarterback is ready to take flight.

Penn State loses Parker Washington and Mitchell Tinsley at wide receiver and Brenton Strange at tight end. Together, that accounts for 1,550 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns to replace in the passing offense from a year ago. Fortunately, Penn State has some players ready to step up and make up for the lost production, including some young players that will continue to develop this spring.

Here is a look at what Penn State has to offer at wide receiver and tight end this spring when spring football practices open on March 14.

Keandre Lambert-Smith

Measurables: 6’1″, 184 lb

Year: Junior

Expected role: Starting wide receiver

KeAndre Lambert-Smith is Penn State’s top returning wide receiver from a season ago. Following the departures of Parker Washington and Mitchell Tinsley, Lambert-Smith has the most Penn State experience at the position, and he should remain a fixture in the offense for new starting quarterback Drew Allar to rely on stretching the field.

Harrison Wallace III

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Measurables: 6’1″, 196 lb

Year: Redshirt sophomore

Expected role: Possible starting wide receiver, solid contributor

Competing for a possible starting job could be Harrison Wallace III, who had 19 catches for 273 yards and a touchdown last season as a reserve option. Wallace finished sixth on the team in receiving yards in 2022 and is the third-leading receiver coming back from last year’s roster, although a pair of transfer additions to the roster means Wallace will look to make a statement this spring for consideration for an increased role in the fall.

NEXT: Key transfer additions

Parker Washington suffers season-ending injury

James Franklin confirms the worst fears regarding Parker Washington.

After not traveling with the team for a road game at Rutgers, rumors were running rampant that Penn State wide receiver [autotag]Parker Washington[/autotag] is done for the year due to an injury. And on Tuesday, while not getting into the specifics of the injury, head coach [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] did confirm the worst fears among Penn State fans. Washington is officially done for the season.

Washington’s 2022 season comes to a premature close with 611 receiving yards on 46 receptions with two touchdowns in 10 games. Washington entered the 2022 season with high expectations but things got off to a bit of a slower start than most would have anticipated. It was not until late October when Washington scored his first touchdown of the season, but he exploded against Ohio State for 179 yards on a season-high 11 receptions.

The loss of Washington is a significant blow to Penn State’s offense as he had been reminding those watching just how dangerous he can be going into November. Penn State will rely on [autotag]Mitchell Tinsley[/autotag] and [autotag]KeAndre Lambert-Smith[/autotag] to lead the way in the receiving game, and the offense may have more opportunities for players like [autotag]Harrison Wallace III[/autotag], [autotag]Omari Evans[/autotag], and [autotag]Malick Meiga[/autotag] to get some more playing time.

The reliance on the tight ends is also a safe route for the passing game with one final regular season game to be played, in addition to a postseason bowl game.

Penn State will host Michigan State this weekend and then wait to find out what bowl game they will be participating in. The latest bowl projections seem to be favoring the Citrus Bowl, but a path to the New Years Six is still on the table for the Nittany Lions as well.

And there are some young receivers to look forward to as well.
