Rhule credits Tom Osborne for help with Malachi Coleman’s first touchdown

A Nebraska wide receiver scored his first collegiate touchdown in Saturday’s win against Northwestern.

A Nebraska wide receiver scored his first collegiate touchdown in Saturday’s win against Northwestern. Freshman Malachi Coleman hauled in a 44-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter of the Husker’s 17-9 victory.

Nebraska scored on a play reminiscent of the Cornhuskers of the 80s and 90s. Head coach Matt Rhule said the man in charge of the program during that time suggested the play.

I don’t do anything theatrical during games. I don’t point to the crowd. I don’t point to my family. But I did point up to Coach (Tom) Osborne’s box. Because Coach Osborne came in and said, ‘if you guys are going to keep running the belly g-option, you have to run the belly g-pass’. And (director of player support and outreach) Ron (Brown) has been telling us that.

Rhule said that the offense knew that they would be running the play at some point on Saturday, and after a big turnover in the fourth quarter, offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield pulled the trigger.

We got that turnover and we said ‘let’s run it.’ And Malachi… that’s the route you run for the love the game to get everyone else open. And Malachi ran by everyone and ran the belly g-option pass and hit it for a touchdown. We played as a team.

Husker football pulls away in 17-9 win over Northwestern

The 100th anniversary of Memorial Stadium saw a wild showdown.

The 100th anniversary of Memorial Stadium saw a wild showdown. In the first few minutes of the game, Nebraska found itself in a disastrous position against Northwestern. The Huskers’ two first drives resulted in two straight interceptions, giving the Wildcats prime field position. But Nebraska stepped up and fended off Northwestern when it counted, resulting in a 17-9 2023 win.

Heinrich Haarberg stumbled out of the gate with the two interceptions. But he went the rest of the game without any costly errors. Haarberg threw eight completions off 17 passes for 85 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, he ran for 72 yards and a touchdown off 16 rushes. Emmett Johnson led the Huskers in rushing yards in the win, going for 73 yards off 12 carries.

Though Northwestern finished with more total offensive yards than Nebraska, the Huskers’ defense kept the Wildcats to just nine points. The Blackshirts brought the pressure, delivering eight total sacks in the game.

But the Huskers also struggled to put points on the board. However, each time Nebraska scored, it was big. Haarberg’s rushing touchdown handed the Huskers the lead and his 44-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Coleman extended that lead to 17-6.

With the win, Nebraska moves to 4-3. The last time the Huskers got to four wins before the last game of the season was in 2019, when they defeated Northwestern 13-10 to move to 4-2. Nebraska will remain at home next Saturday against Purdue. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. and can be viewed on FS1.

Nebraksa reciever makes ESPN’s top 50 newcomers for the 2023 season

Nebraska football should have a brand new identity under new head coach Matt Rhule.

Nebraska football should have a brand new identity under new head coach Matt Rhule. Given the players on the roster and the carryover from previous regimes, the transformation may be subtle, but we should see the team ease into the structure of what Rhule wants his team to look like.

A player on the perimeter who could be at the forefront of change is incoming freshman Malachi Coleman. The 6-foot-4 receiver makes ESPN’s top 50 newcomers combining freshmen and transfers nationwide. The Nebraska native sees himself at No. 49 on ESPN’s list.

The freshman receiver was rated 155th in ESPN’s top 300 players for the 2023 freshman class. Coleman was also the No. 1 prospect from the state of Nebraska and No. 9 nationally at his position, per ESPN’s recruiting database. Malachi is one of three incoming freshmen ranked in ESPN’s top 300 for 2023.

You would have to go back to 2019 to see similar levels of pull by Nebraska in ESPN’s player pool.

Additionally, former Huskers linebacker, Ernest Hausmann, finds his name on the list as he starts his journey with the Wolverines in Michigan. The standout defensive player in 2022 opted to transfer to Michigan to “maximize his potential.”
