Remainder of G League, Red Claws season likely to be canceled soon

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Malika Andrews report the NBA’s G League – and Maine Red Claws – season is likely to be canceled soon.

Boston Celtics two way players Tacko Fall and Tremont Waters will be likely be done playing for the Maine Red Claws for the season soon.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Malika Andrews report that the remainder of the NBA’s G League season will soon be canceled, effectively ending the duo’s time in Portland with Boston’s developmental franchise.

The G League regular season runs through the end of March, after which the pair would have been eligible to play with the team as much as needed — the 45-day maximum days limiting how often a two way player can play with the parent club lifted with the ending of the G League season.

If the season is resumed, that could still happen, though neither would be eligible for postseason play as two way players.

However, with news of new CDC guidelines which call for no gatherings of more than 50 people for the next eight weeks, such an eventuality became more complicated.

A resumption of league activities is perhaps still possible, but in even the best-case scenario seeing the recommendation changed back to something permitting even a bare-bones, empty-arena game would not begin until the second week of May.

Maine Red Claws join Boston Celtics in suspending season

The Maine Red Claws have joined the Boston Celtics in suspending their season indefinitely due to concerns about the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

If you were hoping to fill the hole left by suspended Boston Celtics games after the NBA indefinitely put a halt to the 2019-20 season with some Maine Red Claws games, you’re going to be disappointed.

But, the G League’s decision to suspend operations along with the NBA was the right call to make, as even the comparatively smaller size of Red Claws and other G League games represents a significant risk.

Following the lead of the parent club, the Claws released a statement on the closure, noting that the team has been working closely with the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

They also noted that the Maine CDC “determined that no Red Claws players, staff nor game attendees face any significant risk from the case involving the Utah players” after center Vincent Poirier’s time with the Red Claws following Boston’s Mar. 6 tilt with Utah.

The Claws had eight games remaining in their season, and the team is weighing whether to ask players to remain in the Portland area should the league decide to resume activities this season at a later, safer date.

Tremont Waters named to Eastern Conference Midseason All-NBA G League Team

The honor is the equivalent to making an All-Star Game in the NBA G League.

Tremont Waters continues to rack up honors in the NBA G League. Per a press release from the Maine Red Claws, the Boston Celtics point guard — signed to a Two-Way contract — has been named to theG League’s Midseason All-NBA Team.

According to the press release from the Red Claws, “the Midseason All-NBA G League Team is the G League’s equivalent of an All-Star team. NBA G League coaches and general managers voted on the top performers from the first half of the season, based on the performance of players in games through Jan. 28, 2020. Players must have played in 50 [percent] of a team’s games in order to qualify.”

Waters was named as the G League’s Player of the Month in November and has earned G League Player of the Week honors twice.

The 51st overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft out of Louisiana State University, Waters is averaging 19.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, 7.8 assists and 2.3 steals per game, ranking in the top-five in both assists and steals. The Red Claws are 22-9, ranked second in the G League’s Eastern Conference and third overall, and are 20-6 with Waters in the lineup.

Waters has played in nine games for the Celtics, the Red Claws’ parent club, this season.

Celtics trio combine for 54 points in Red Claws win over Charge

Two way players Tacko Fall and Tremont Waters joined Boston Celtics rookie Carsen Edwards in combining for 54 points with the Maine Red Claws Thursday.

Boston Celtics two way player Tacko Fall had an outstanding evening with the Maine Red Claws in the developmental affiliate’s 122-98 home win over the Canton Charge.

The Senegalese center was hyper-efficient from the floor to connect on 9-of-10 shots attempted, scoring 18 points and pulling down 16 rebounds in the win over the Cleveland Cavaliers’ G League affiliate.

It was the 11th double-double of the season for the UCF product.

His two way teammate Tremont Waters had a good outing as well against the Charge, which saw the point guard score 14 points, 5 boards, 9 assists and 2 steals.

Both had spent time with the parent club in the last week, but neither had much playing time with the Celtics, with Waters and Fall earning most of their floor time with the G League affiliate this season.

Celtics rookie shooting guard Carsen Edwards was with the Claws as well, and led the team in scoring with 22 points.

His shooting from beyond the arc has been off since early in the season, and Thursday was no exception, with the Purdue product going 3-of-12 from 3-point range — though 9-of-18 overall.

Like his teammates, he’s spent much of his season in Maine to work on his game, and is starting to show signs of increased confidence as he tries to shoot his way out of his long-distance slump.

The Red Claws have benefitted from the influx of high-level talent, and sit at 22 wins and just 8 losses on the season, second in the entire G League behind only the Wisconsin Herd, the developmental affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Red Claws next face the first-place Herd in a showdown of the G League’s two best teams on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 8pm ET.

Three Celtics in double figures for Red Claws vs Salt Lake City Stars

Rookies Tremont Waters, Carsen Edwards and Tacko Fall continue to boost the Maine Red Claws with their play, helping the team beat the Salt Lake City Stars Thursday night with all three in double figures.

The bonds forged in Las Vegas Summer League continue to power the Maine Red Claws to an outstanding season, with a trio of Boston Celtics leading the way.

Two way players Tacko Fall and Tremont Waters were joined by Celtics rookie guard Carsen Edwards on Boston’s G League affiliate Jan. 16th. The trio helped the team beat the Salt Lake City Stars (the G League affiliate of the Jazz) 107 – 103 at home in Portland.

LSU product Waters logged 17 points, while Fall had another double-double with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting and 10 rebounds.

Edwards added 14 points and a pair of steals, but continues to struggle with his shot, going 0-for-6 on the night from beyond the arc.

The heavy Celtics presence this season has helped the Red Claws put together one of the best campaigns in club history.

Currently, they only trail the 20-5 Wisconsin Herd for second in the G League’s Eastern conference, and hold the developmental league’s third-best record.

Celtics trio leads Red Claws to sixth straight win, best since 2016

Rookie Carsen Edwards joined two way teammates Tacko Fall and Tremont Waters in extending the Maine Red Claws winning streak to six, their most since 2016.

Boston Celtics two way players Tacko Fall and Tremont Waters were joined by Celtics rookie Carsen Edwards on the Maine Red Claws Tuesday night in constructing a 138-126 win over the Erie Bayhawks.

The win over the New Orleans Pelicans’ G League affiliate was the Claws’ sixth win in a row, a feat not accomplished since 2016.

Edwards, a first-year shooting guard out of Purdue loaned to the Celtics’ affiliate to get reps for development, logged 11 points, six boards and 4 assists on the night.

The Senegalese fan favorite continued his interior dominance, with Fall registering 11 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks.

G League Player of the Week Waters put up 26 points on 11-of-19 shooting, including a sizzling first quarter that saw him sink four 3-pointers in the frame.

At least some of the Red Claws success this season can be attributed to the seven rookies Boston signed this offseason, with the Celtics taking advantage of their new ownership of the G League outfit to develop their young players.

Tremont Waters, Carsen Edwards combine for 50 at Vegas G League Showcase

Boston’s rookie guard Carsen Edwards and two way player Tremont Waters scored a combined 50 points in a loss to the Canton Charge at the Las Vegas G League Showcase Thursday.

While it came in a loss, Boston Celtics two way point guard Tremont Waters and rookie sharpshooter Carsen Edwards stole the show at the NBA’s Las Vegas G League Winter Showcase Thursday.

In a 118-113 loss to the Canton Charge, the duo combined for 50 points, with the Purdue product logging 23 points, 8 boards, 4 assists and as many steals, shooting 50 % from the floor on the night.

The second-round pick has struggled a bit with accuracy with the parent club, shooting .333 from deep and just .303 inside the arc.

Waters dropped 27 points and 9 assists and 5 steals in the losing effort, but seems to have caught whatever has been plaguing Edwards, shooting 1-of-8 from deep on the night.

Two way Celtics center Tacko Fall joined rookie wing Romeo Langford with Boston the night prior to provide depth against the Dallas Mavericks, and did not play with the Claws as a result.

The G League Showcase features the entire G League’s 28 teams, and pits the top four teams of the regular season — the Grand Rapids Drive, Memphis Hustle, Salt Lake City Stars and Wisconsin Herd, this year — in a four-team tournament with a price of $100,000.

Report: Celtics rookie center Vincent Poirier assigned to Red Claws

Vincent Poirier may make his NBA G League debut today, as the Maine Red Claws are set to face the Wisconsin Herd at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+.

Per an announcement from the Boston Celtics, rookie center Vincent Poirier — who the team signed to a two-year contract in the offseason — has been assigned to the Maine Red Claws, Boston’s NBA G League affiliate.

Only suiting up for seven contests this season, the Frenchman has averaged just 1.3 points, 1.1 rebounds and 0.3 blocks per game, shooting 44.4% from the field. As you might expect, these numbers pale in comparison to the ones he put up last season (10.6 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game), when he was suiting up for Kirolbet Baskonia.

Maine will play against the Wisconsin Herd on Thursday (on ESPN+ at 7 p.m. ET), so Poirier may make his G League debut today.

Tremont Waters named Player of the Month for G League

Boston Celtics rookie point guard Tremont Waters was a steal with the 51st pick in the 2019 NBA Draft and the Maine Red Claws have benefited the most from that.

Per an official announcement from the Maine Red Claws (h/t NBC Sports Boston’s Chris Forsberg), Boston Celtics rookie point guard Tremont Waters — a two-way player who will spend the majority of his time with the Maine Red Claws this season — has been named the Player of the Month for the NBA G League in November.

The Red Claws compiled 7-2 record in November with their only two losses coming with Waters out of the lineup. Per the team’s announcement, the 5-foot-10 floor general is just the second player to earn that honor in franchise history.

A dynamic pick-and-roll player with a knack for scoring outside, Waters has averaged 22.3 points, 7.7 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game, shooting 45.0% from the field and 40.3% from three-point range.

Per the G League’s official league leaders, Waters ranks in the top-15 in scoring average, the top-five in average assists and the top-30 in average steals.

Romeo Langford injures ankle again, carried off Red Claws floor

Romeo Langford can’t catch a break as he sustains his third injury since being drafted with the 14th overall pick by the Boston Celtics.

Romeo Langford can’t catch a break.

According to the Boston Globe’s Chad Finn, Boston Celtics rookie swingman Romeo Langford — assigned to their NBA G League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws — has sustained yet another injury, as he rolled his right ankle (again) after a reverse layup and had to be carried off the court.

Langford, seemingly in a great deal of pain or at least understandably frustrated with his bad injury luck, left the game with 14 points (on 7-11 shooting from the field) and three assists in 17 minutes. Maine would eventually outlast the Long Island Nets, 116-114.

The 14th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, Langford’s injuries — a torn thumb ligament, a strained groin and a previously sprained ankle — have prevented him from entering the Celtics’ rotation despite his talent and draft position.

He’s played just 14 seconds for the Celtics this season, as Boston’s bench continues to struggle to put up points.
