When Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson announced he was the latest cover athlete for “Madden 21,” it was no big shock for fans. After putting up an MVP season and leading the Ravens to the No. 1 seed in the AFC thanks to his electric play, Jackson was the easy choice to grace the cover of the video game franchise. While plenty of artists have mocked up what it might look like, we now have our first true look at Jackson on the cover of “Madden 21,” including the MVP edition of the game.

Jackson won the MVP award last season after throwing for 3,127 yards and 36 touchdowns to just six interceptions. But Jackson isn’t just a traditional pocket passer, he broke Michael Vick’s single-season rushing record for quarterbacks with 1,206 rushing yards and another seven rushing touchdowns. His 6.9 yards-per-carry rushing average led the entire NFL last season, including over the league’s top running backs.

Jackson follows in the shoes of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who took the NFL by storm in 2018 en route to an MVP award and the cover of Madden 20. Baltimore fans are hoping Jackson continues to follow in Mahomes’ footsteps as the quarterback led Kansas City to a win in Super Bowl LIV over the San Francisco 49ers.

As NFL fans look forward to training camp and the eventual start of the 2020 regular season, those video game players have something else football related to look forward to. EA Sports is set to release “Madden 21,” another entry in the long-running video game franchise, on Aug. 25. While you can’t yet play cover athlete and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson in this version, you can watch the new “Madden 21” trailer.

EA Sports has previously released little teasers for the game, including a “Madden 21” announcement trailer with Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. However, none of the trailers or teasers have really shown off the gameplay or any of the new features from this year’s version of the game. That all ended today with the first “Madden 21” gameplay trailer that heavily features Jackson.

Jackson spoiled the reveal that he was the cover athlete for this year’s edition, telling reporters ahead of time during a video call. That earned a little joke from the publisher on Twitter.

It’s no surprise Jackson made the cover this year. He’s fresh off an MVP award-winning season in which he broke several franchise and NFL records. That includes the record for the most single-season rushing yards by a quarterback, last held by Michael Vick. Jackson led Baltimore to a 14-2 regular-season record and the No. 1 seed in the AFC. Even though last season didn’t end the way they wanted, the Ravens are once again favorites to win Super Bowl LV with Jackson under center.
