USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings, July 2: Alex Pereira overtakes Jon Jones for P4P No. 1

Check out the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings following UFC 303 in Las Vegas, in which a new P4P king has been crowned.

Following UFC 303 and 2024 PFL 6, the USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings required updating.

A massive shakeup has occurred in the MMA Junkie pound-for-pound rankings following the UFC’s pay-per-view event headlining International Fight Week in Las Vegas.

Alex Pereira knocked out Jiri Prochazka in Round 2 of their light heavyweight title rematch, and as a result, shook up the top of the P4P rankings.

Jon Jones returned to claim the No. 1 P4P spot after winning the heavyweight title in his divisional debut at UFC 285, and held it until now. Due to his incredible performances and high activity, Pereira, a former middleweight champion, swoops in to take the throne after winning his fourth straight fight, all of which were against former light heavyweight champions.

Due to inactivity, Jones falls to No. 3 behind lightweight champion Islam Makhachev.

Also in action at the pay-per-view event, [autotag]Ian Machado Garry[/autotag] and [autotag]Macy Chiasson[/autotag] made waves in the rankings with their victorious outings.

Macy Chiasson sees herself in title contention after UFC 303 win, open to Kayla Harrison bout

Macy Chiasson doesn’t see herself too far from a title shot following her win over Mayra Bueno Silva at UFC 303.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Macy Chiasson[/autotag] believes she’s nearing a title shot and just needs a few more results to get it.

The Ultimate Fighter 28 winner thinks she’s entered title contention following her most recent victory. Chiasson (11-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC) defeated Bueno Silva (10-4-1 MMA, 5-4-1 UFC) by TKO (doctor’s stoppage) on the main card of Saturday’s UFC 303. Now on a two-fight winning streak, the 32-year-old fighter thinks it’s just a matter of winning one or two more bouts before the UFC comes calling with a championship fight.

“I hope so, and I feel like I am (one or two wins away from a title shot),” Chiasson told reporters at the UFC 303 post-fight press conference. “I feel like I’ve put in the work, and I’m exactly right where I’m supposed to be. Mick Maynard and Dana (White) have taken great care of me, so whatever they want next for me, I want it.”

There have been rumblings that Raquel Pennington will defend her women’s bantamweight belt later this year against former champion Julianna Peña. Although it’s not official, Chiasson is open to serve as a backup for that fight or take on [autotag]Kayla Harrison[/autotag], who’s also angling to get a crack at the belt.

“Potentially, yeah,” Chiasson said when asked about a fight with Harrison. “It’s been in talks, obviously. I have a few ideas of who she should fight before me, but like I said, the UFC has taken a lot of care for me, so whatever Dana and Mick want for me, I want in.”

Chiasson took almost two years away from the sport back in 2022, and she belives that time off has helped her elevate her game. She’s excited to see what this latest version of her will bring to the table.

“I needed time off to eat more calories,” Chiasson said. “Making 135 was horrific. I was running 40 miles a week on top of doing camps, and I was just deteriorating. My mental health started slipping, and I wasn’t sure if I was going to come back to fighting. There was a moment I thought I was done. That was kind of rock bottom for me, and I think moving through that and working through all the kinks, it’s really what had gotten me to where I’m at now.”

UFC 303 results: Gnarly gash on Mayra Bueno Silva ends fight – all thanks to Macy Chiasson’s elbow

No, Mayra Bueno Silva was not hit in the head with an ax.

A nasty gash caused a halt to the women’s bantamweight fight on the UFC 303 main card Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Midway through Round 2, [autotag]Macy Chiasson[/autotag] drilled [autotag]Mayra Bueno Silva[/autotag] in the forehead with a massive elbow. The blow immediately caused blood, and upon the two fighters rising to the feet, referee Chris Tognoni called timeout.

The cageside physician entered the cage and inspected Silva (10-4-1 MMA, 5-4-1 UFC), who leaked all over herself. The gash was massive and induced groans from the audience when the doctor spread it apart. Upon the advice of the medical professional, Tognoni waved off the fight at 1:58 of Round 2 and Chiasson (11-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC) was declared the victor.

Fortis MMA’s Chiasson has won two fights in a row. She previously competed in March when she finished Pannie Kianzad with strikes.

The defeat is Silva’s second in a row and the first since her unsuccessful title bid against Raquel Pennington in June.

Mayra Bueno Silva vs. Macy Chiasson prediction, pick, start time, odds for UFC 303

Two bantamweight title hopefuls Mayra Bueno Silva and Macy Chiasson throw down on the UFC 303 main card. Who gets closer to a title shot?

[autotag]Mayra Bueno Silva[/autotag] and [autotag]Macy Chiasson[/autotag] meet Saturday on the main card of UFC 303 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.

Last event: 3-2
UFC main cards, 2024: 52-49-2

Mayra Bueno Silva vs. Macy Chiasson UFC 303 preview

Silva (10-3-1 MMA, 5-3-1 UFC) returns for the first time since coming up short in her bid for the vacant bantamweight title. Silva lost a unanimous decision to Raquel Pennington at UFC 297, snapping a three-fight winning streak, not including a submission over Holly Holm that was later overturned to a no contest. … Chiasson (10-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC) enters her second fight of the year as well, following a first-round submission of Pannie Kianzad in March. Winner of Season 28 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” Chiasson will look to put together back-to-back wins for the first time since defeating Shanna Young in 2020 and Marion Reneau a year later.

Mayra Bueno Silva vs. Macy Chiasson UFC 303 expert pick, prediction

Filling out the main card is an affair at women’s flyweight between Silva and Chiasson.

Considering her unfortunate luck with fight cancellations, it’s nice to see Chiasson stay more active by making a relatively quick turnaround here.

Chiasson also appeared to better manage her weight cut last time out, which is a great sign for her potential future in this division. That said, I’m still not sure her size translates to staying power when the sparks start to fly.

The stock of Silva may be low after her disappointing bid for the bantamweight title earlier this year, but the fighter from Brazil apparently sustained an injury by the end of the first round (which could help explain some things).

Although I can still see a reality where the Fortis MMA product can use her size and skills to grind Silva against the cage regardless of her health, I suspect that Silva’s front-choke savvy could serve as a solid counter-grappling tool in this fight.

Add in the fact that Silva’s body and leg kicks should be especially live against Chiasson, and I can’t help but back the former title challenger to snatch up a submission on the American in round 2.

Mayra Bueno Silva vs. Macy Chiasson UFC 303 odds

Despite the oddsmakers opening the Brazilian as a bigger favorite, public money has pushed this fight to a pick’em, listing Silva at -113 and Chiasson -113 via FanDuel.

Mayra Bueno Silva vs. Macy Chiasson UFC 303 start time, how to watch

As the second main card bout, Silva and Chiasson are expected to make their walks to the cage at approximately 10:45 p.m. ET (7:45 p.m. local time in Las Vegas). The fight streams live on ESPN+ pay-per-view.

Macy Chiasson breaks down UFC 303 opponent Mayra Bueno Silva: ‘I think she’s kind of a mess’

Macy Chiasson gives her thoughts on her UFC 303 opponent Mayra Bueno Silva, and explains why she thinks her mental game needs work.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Macy Chiasson[/autotag] is impressed with what her UFC 303 opponent Mayra Bueno Silva brings to the cage early in her fights, but believes there is something lacking in her complete game.

Chiasson (9-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC), winner of Season 28 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” thinks she noticed Bueno Silva (10-3-1 MMA, 5-3-1 UFC) show some gaps in her mental game when she fought Raquel Pennington for the vacant bantamweight title at UFC 297 in January.

While praising Bueno Silva’s approach early in the fight, Chiasson questioned what happened as the fight wore on, keeping note of what could happen when they meet inside the cage on the main card of UFC 303 at T-Mobile Arena.

“Just like I’ve been watching in all of her fights, her first round, first few rounds, are really exhilarating,” Chiasson told reporters at the UFC 303 media day. “I mean, she’s kind of crazy, and she puts a pace and she goes for exactly what she’s looking for. But I really kind of saw what I think is a lot to do with her mindset. I don’t think she has the right mindset right now.

“I think she’s kind of a mess. It showed in the fourth and fifth round of the fight. Like, you’re in a title fight and you’re laying on your back. I’ve heard some stuff that she like ruptured an eardrum – understandable. Injures, you have to mitigate and do what you can in a fight, but I think title fight, you have to bring the heat.”

Chiasson will look to make it back-to-back victories with a win at UFC 303. If successful, she knows her name will be on the shortlist for a title opportunity.

“I know I can hang with these girls,” Chiasson said. “I have the capability and the ability to go in there and take out anyone in front of me. It’s just connecting the mind and the body.

“… There’s a lot that I’ve talked to Mick (Maynard) about, and the potential along the lines for a title situation. But I’m trying not to get ahead of myself, because the No. 1 thing that I’ve really been focused on is just being in the moment and not thinking about results.”

Mayra Bueno Silva vs. Macy Chiasson added to UFC 303 for International Fight Week

UFC 303 sees the addition of a key women’s bantamweight bout between Mayra Bueno Silva and Macy Chiasson.

The UFC 303 pay-per-view for International Fight Week keeps taking shape.

On Tuesday, the promotion announced the addition of a women’s bantamweight fight between former title challenger [autotag]Mayra Bueno Silva[/autotag] and veteran [autotag]Macy Chiasson[/autotag] for the June 29 event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

UFC 303 will be headlined by the return of superstar Conor McGregor, who takes on former Bellator champion Michael Chandler.

This bout marks the first fight for Bueno Silva (10-3-1 MMA, 5-3-1 UFC) since losing to Raquel Pennington in January for the vacant women’s bantamweight title. Prior to the setback, the Brazilian was on a three-fight winning streak, with a no contest against Holly Holm that was originally a win.

Chiasson (10-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC) fought last month, submitting Pannie Kianzad in the first round – a victory that earned her a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus. The victory allowed Chiasson to bounce back from a KO loss to Irene Aldana in 2022.
