When Brown announced his resignation as Texas head coach after the 2013 season, the national championship-winning coach took five seasons off. He spent time as an ESPN commentator at games and in the studio. In 2019, Brown made his return to coaching with North Carolina.
After two seasons with Brown, the Tar Heels have turned their program around. They sport a 15-10 record with an appearance in the Orange Bowl. Before Brown arrived, North Carolina had two consecutive nine loss seasons.
North Carolina announced an extension of Brown on Monday. His contract will now run through the 2025 season. When the deal expires, Brown will be 73 years old.
The University of North Carolina has agreed to extensions with Head Football Coach Mack Brown and the football program’s 10 full-time assistant coaches, Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham announced Monday. Brown’s extension maintains the terms of the original agreement and keeps the length of Brown’s contract at five years, through the 2025 season. The contracts of the assistant coaches are now all three-year deals. In addition, wide receivers coach Lonnie Galloway has been promoted to assistant head coach, while Larry Porter will serve as assistant special teams coordinator and running backs coach.

While Texas and North Carolina do not have each other scheduled for the future, both teams will be hoping to appear in New Year’s Six bowl games or even the College Football Playoff. A reunion between Brown and the Longhorns would be an emotional one for all parties.
