Duke football finishes the 2024 season with more fourth-quarter comebacks than losses

With their thrilling win over Wake Forest, the Duke Blue Devils ended the 2024 regular season with more fourth-quarter comebacks than losses.

The Duke Blue Devils scored three touchdowns in the final 16 minutes of Saturday’s game against Wake Forest, including a 39-yard strike from quarterback [autotag]Maalik Murphy[/autotag] to star wideout [autotag]Jordan Moore[/autotag] on the final play, for a 23-17 comeback victory over the Demon Deacons.

With a 9-3 regular-season record now cemented, Duke achieved a pretty staggering feat with its late surge in Winston-Salem. The Blue Devils came from behind in the fourth quarter four different times in 2024, including a last-minute field goal against Northwestern in Week 2 and a 21-point surge against the North Carolina Tar Heels back in Week 5, to give them more comebacks than losses in the regular season.

The Wildcats game was technically tied until a Northwestern field goal with 11:39 left on the clock, but even without including that game, the numbers are tied at three apiece. That doesn’t even include the SMU game in Week 9 when Duke scored two late touchdowns to force overtime, only losing after a failed 2-point conversion on the first additional possession.

For those doing the math at home, head coach [autotag]Manny Diaz[/autotag] ended his first season in Durham with a winning record when trailing after three quarters. Duke won three of its five such games this season, only surrendering a late lead once to Georgia Tech.

The Duke Blue Devils closed the 2024 college football season with their most dramatic victory yet thanks to a 39-yard touchdown on the final play.

After falling behind 17-3 early in the third quarter, quarterback [autotag]Maalik Muprhy[/autotag] completed 16 of his 20 second-half attempts for 153 yards as he led a trio of touchdown drives. With eight seconds left and the Blue Devils on the edge of field goal range, he opted to instead loft the ball down the right sideline to a wide-open Jordan Moore, who somehow found a gap in the defense and reached the end zone for a walk-off score.

The last-second touchdown gave the Blue Devils a 23-17 victory and secured their second nine-win season in three years. With previous wins over the North Carolina Tar Heels and NC State Wolfpack already on the resume, head coach Manny Diaz and his players swept their three in-state conference rivals for the first time since 2013.

Here are the best photos from the stunning comeback victory in Winston-Salem.

Duke football sweeps the state of North Carolina for the first time in more than a decade

Duke’s 23-17 win over Wake Forest on Saturday meant that, for the first time in more than a decade, the Blue Devils swept the state.

For the first time since 2013, the Duke Blue Devils run the state of North Carolina.

Quarterback [autotag]Maalik Murphy[/autotag] and wide receiver[autotag] Jordan Moore[/autotag] teamed up for a 39-yard touchdown on the final play of the game in Winston-Salem on Saturday, handing Duke a 23-17 victory over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

The win, Duke’s ninth of the season, cemented a sweep of the other three ACC schools from the state. The Blue Devils mounted a 20-point comeback against the North Carolina Tar Heels in Week 5 and handed the NC State Wolfpack a 29-19 win in Raleigh in Week 11, completing a trifecta they haven’t achieved since that fateful 10-win season under David Cutcliffe.

In a similar fashion to the Tar Heels game, Duke needed three late touchdowns to beat the Demon Deacons. Murph completed 16 of his 20 second-half passes for 153 yards and ran for another score after the break, ending the regular season with a school-record 26 touchdown passes.

None of the other three teams entered Week 14 with more than six wins for the year, either, so the Blue Devils will finish multiple games above the rest of the state.

Watch Maalik Murphy and Jordan Moore connect for walkoff touchdown against Wake Forest

Duke’s Maalik Murphy and Jordan Moore authored the best moment of an incredible Duke football season on Saturday’s final play.

Would any other ending to the 2024 Duke football season have felt appropriate?

As they’ve done so often this season, the Blue Devils fell behind by multiple scores against Wake Forest in Winston-Salem on Saturday. And as they’ve done so often this season, quarterback [autotag]Maalik Murphy[/autotag] and star receiver [autotag]Jordan Moore[/autotag] saved the day with second-half heroics.

With eight seconds left on the clock and a timeout still on the board, Duke sat at the edge of field goal range at the Demon Deacons’ 39-yard line. Head coach Manny Diaz opted to let Murphy throw one last time in hopes of creating an easier chance for kicker Todd Pelino. However, the first-year starter lingered in the pocket rather than immediately getting the ball out, letting precious seconds dwindle.

Instead of throwing it away or trying for a short completion over the middle, however, Murphy heaved the ball down the right sideline to Moore, who somehow found a seam behind the coverage. The ball hit Moore perfectly in stride, and the star receiver evaded both defensive backs in his vicinity to reach the end zone. Ball game.

The win clinched Duke’s second nine-win season in three years and gave the Blue Devils an in-season sweep of the Demon Deacons, NC State Wolfpack, and North Carolina Tar Heels for the first time since 2013.

Duke football scores three late touchdowns to win cold, windy game over Wake Forest

Maalik Murphy and Jordan Moore connected for a 39-yard touchdown on Duke’s last play of the regular season, clinching a win over Wake Forest.

Every Duke football fan, and likely everybody on the Blue Devils sideline, wanted a field goal. [autotag]Maalik Murphy[/autotag] and [autotag]Jordan Moore[/autotag] wanted a touchdown.

With eight seconds left in a tie game in Winston-Salem, Murphy bounced on the balls of his feet in the pocket for two seconds too long. With the clock winding down and head coach Manny Diaz still holding a timeout in his pocket, Duke wanted to push for a shorter field goal attempt at the buzzer, but the chances of completing a pass in time dwindled with each beat that Murphy held the ball.

With just a few seconds left, Murphy’s eyes flitted back to the right, and he wound up and threw the ball over the top of the Demon Deacons defense. It looked for a moment like the first-year Duke quarterback was simply throwing it away in an effort to preserve a second, but Wake Forest’s defense noticed Moore slip behind them just seconds too late.

Moore snagged the pass just a few yards from the goal line, and a quick spin move ensured the closing safety wouldn’t stop him short of the painted grass. Touchdown, Blue Devils.

Despite a slow start from the Duke offense, the Blue Devils left Winston-Salem with a 23-17 victory on Saturday afternoon to clinch a nine-win season and sweep their in-state conference rivals.

Despite the Demon Deacons already losing their chance at a bowl appearance with seven losses in their first 11 games, Wake Forest still came out steadier than the Blue Devils on Saturday afternoon. The home team picked up 93 yards of offense in the opening quarter thanks to a drive deep within Duke territory, only remaining scoreless thanks to a missed 43-yard field goal attempt, but the Demon Deacons’ five first downs boded poorly for the remainder of the game.

While Todd Pelino put Duke in front with a 45-yard field goal through the cold wind, Wake Forest answered within minutes. Quarterback Hank Bachmeier and running back Tate Carney combined to pick up 67 yards on just four plays, most notably with Bachmeier’s 30-yard over-the-shoulder strike to wideout Horatio Fields that set up the Demon Deacons in the red zone.

Carney bruised the remaining eight yards into the end zone on the following snap, and after a quick interception from Murphy, Wake Forest rumbled back across midfield on the ensuing possession. The Blue Devils managed to hold them to a field goal, preventing star wideout Taylor Morin from converting a third-and-7 in the red zone to keep it a one-score game, but the first-half results were stunning given each team’s form.

Through the first two quarters, Wake Forest outgained Duke 236-122 despite bringing the most porous defense in the ACC into Week 14. The Demon Deacons converted 14 first downs to the Blue Devils’ six, and they held the ball for 19:48 of the opening 30 minutes.

With the Blue Devils hoping to clamber back into the game early in the third quarter, disaster struck. Running back Jaquez Moore, in his second appearance since Week 2, fumbled a third-down screen pass within 15 yards of his own end zone to give Wake Forest an easy path to a two-score lead.

The Duke defense forced a third-and-5 on the ensuing possession, but Bachmeier hit Fields in stride over the middle to let his wideout walk into the end zone and build a 17-3 advantage.

As he’s done over and over again in 2024, however, Murphy gave his team new life with one great throw at the right time. With the Blue Devils 42 yards from the end zone with less than 18 minutes left in the game, he dropped a 30-yard sideline pass in the bucket to redshirt freshman Que’Sean Brown for a lightning strike into the red zone.

Running back Star Thomas galloped into the end zone from three yards out just a few plays later, and when Wake Forest star Demond Claiborne fumbled the ensuing kickoff back to the Blue Devils, Duke officially retook command of the game. Moore, the running back, redeemed himself with an 18-yard carry into the red zone, bouncing off multiple potential tacklers, and Murphy put the go-ahead score on the board himself with a read-option run that fooled the entire Demon Deacons defense.

Duke’s final drive to victory started with 82 seconds left on the board, and the 39-yard last-second touchdown helped Murphy lead the team 76 yards while using just a single timeout. The former Texas Longhorn ended the game with 235 yards and a score, completing 26 of his 34 attempts, and the Blue Devils outgained Wake Forest 211-82 in the second half.

Duke football unveils Wake Forest uniform combination for Week 14 rivalry battle

The Duke Blue Devils revealed their final regular-season uniform combination of the 2024 college football season on Thursday.

For one final time in the 2024 college football regular season, the Duke Blue Devils revealed their upcoming uniform combination on Thursday night.

The Blue Devils head to Winston-Salem for a road game against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Saturday, and Duke will wear white jerseys and pants for the clash. The team will add some color with blue helmets adorned with a devil’s face, a helmet emblem they also sported against Middle Tennessee, North Carolina, and Florida State.

Despite blue and white serving as the team’s primary colors, the Blue Devils have worn black jerseys as often as its white ones this season. The last time Duke wore white was against the NC State Wolfpack in Week 11, a 29-19 victory that helped it sweep The Triangle for the first time since 2013.

A win over the Demon Deacons would clinch Duke’s second nine-win season in three years and keep the Blue Devils undefeated against in-state opponents.

“We cannot pretend to go make a run at the ACC without making run at our state,” he said during his Monday press conference. “That’s a big deal to us.”

The Week 14 battle kicks off at noon on ACC Network this Saturday.

Manny Diaz calls the Virginia Tech victory his team’s ‘worst performance to date’

Despite the Blue Devils defeating Virginia Tech on Saturday, head coach Manny Diaz sounded quite critical of the tape this week.

The Duke Blue Devils picked up their eighth win of the season on Saturday, handing the Virginia Tech Hokies a 31-28 loss in front of the Wallace Wade Stadium crowd, but head coach [autotag]Manny Diaz[/autotag] still saw areas for improvement on film.

In fact, during Diaz’s Monday press conference, he ranked it below all three of Duke’s losses.

“Of the 11 games we have played so far this year, it was, in my mind, our worst performance to date,” Diaz said. “We did so many things that in a normal game or normal circumstance would get you beat.”

Duke ended up with 396 yards of offense, mostly thanks to a pair of lightning-strike touchdowns from fifth-year wideout Eli Pancol on the first four plays from scrimmage. Quarterback [autotag]Maalik Murphy[/autotag] found Pancol for 86-yard and 77-yard scoring plays on the first two drives, but the Blue Devils also turned the ball over four times and converted just two of their 11 third downs.

Murphy’s ball security looked pretty stunning compared to his recent form. The first-year starter tossed the ball to the defense three times before halftime, his second three-interception game this month. However, in his other five battles against ACC opponents, Murphy’s only thrown one pick.

“We’re an aggressive offense anyways and we’ve been aggressive the last six weeks,” offensive coordinator Jonathan Brewer said. “I think we’ve done a pretty good job at not putting the ball in jeopardy at times or trying to force things. We made a few mistakes and tried to push the ball into some territories it shouldn’t have been pushed to.”

Those three interceptions created 10 points for the Hokies, letting Virginia Tech take the lead late in the second quarter. While the record will only show a victory on the books, the head coach fell back on a familiar phrase to describe his thoughts.

“We talk all the time about success versus excellence,” Diaz said. “We were successful, but we were not excellent. We were way below our standard.”

Manny Diaz says Duke will discipline quarterback Maalik Murphy for middle-finger celebration

Duke football coach Manny Diaz said on Monday that the Blue Devils would discipline quarterback Maalik Murphy for his touchdown celebration.

Duke quarterback [autotag]Maalik Murphy[/autotag] will face internal discipline for his touchdown celebration against the Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday.

Murphy hit fifth-year wideout Eli Pancol in stride for an 86-yard touchdown on the Blue Devils’ first play from scrimmage, and the ACC Network broadcast captured him extending both middle fingers into the air in the aftermath. During Manny Diaz’s Monday press conference, the Duke coach explained the context behind the behavior.

“There was a practice in the middle of last week when we were throwing post after post after post, and we weren’t completing them,” Diaz said. “And it was again and again and again and again. And at the end of that, there was a remark made in jest that, ‘If you throw a post for a touchdown in the game, then you can flick me off.'”

While there was an explanation for the outburst, Diaz didn’t sound particularly interested in excusing it.

“It’s something that is unacceptable in our program,” Diaz said. “It doesn’t represent who we are as Duke football. It certainly doesn’t represent who we are as Duke University. That will be handled and disciplined internally.”

Diaz did not elaborate on what that punishment would entail or whether it would affect Murphy’s availability against Wake Forest on Saturday.

Duke breaks into the top 25 in USA TODAY Sports college football re-rank

The Duke Blue Devils finally broke into the top 25 of the USA TODAY Sports college football power rankings on Monday after their eighth win.

The Duke Blue Devils clinched their third straight eight-win season on Saturday night, defeating the Virginia Tech Hokies 31-28 in their final home game of the season. As a result, USA TODAY Sports writer Paul Myerberg included them among his top 25 teams in his college football re-rank on Monday.

Myerberg moved the Blue Devils up three spots to 24th in his latest rankings, one spot ahead of the Colorado Buffaloes.

The aerial duo of [autotag]Maalik Murphy[/autotag] and [autotag]Eli Pancol[/autotag] certainly made an impression during Week 13. Pancol was named ACC Receiver of the Week after he caught two touchdowns longer than 75 yards on Duke’s first two possessions, ending the night with 188 yards and three scores.

The third touchdown connection gave Murphy his 25th scoring pass of the year, a new single-season school record.

Only three other ACC schools finished higher than Duke in Myerberg’s rankings. The Miami Hurricanes (No. 7) and SMU Mustangs (No. 8) will likely play in Charlotte for the conference title, but if Syracuse can find a way to upset Miami, the Clemson Tigers (No. 11) would take their place. All three squads remain in contention for a College Football Playoff appearance, either through the first-round bye as conference champion or via an at-large bid.

The North Carolina Tar Heels, after a 41-21 loss to Boston College, dropped down 10 spots to No. 72.

Duke football receives six votes in the AP Poll after Week 13 victory over Virginia Tech

With an 8-3 record after 11 games, the Duke Blue Devils earned a half-dozen votes in the AP Poll on Sunday.

The Duke Blue Devils couldn’t quite crack the top 25 of the AP Poll on Sunday, but head coach Manny Diaz and his squad received six votes in the updated rankings after Week 13.

The Blue Devils defeated Virginia Tech 31-28 on Saturday night thanks to a 188-yard, three-touchdown performance from fifth-year wideout [autotag]Eli Pancol[/autotag]. Quarterback [autotag]Maalik Murphy[/autotag] finished with a career-high 332 yards, and his third connection with Pancol gave him 25 passing touchdowns for the season, a new school record.

Between its record and its performance against the top teams on its schedule, Duke’s absence from the top 25 remains curious. The Blue Devils came within a 2-point conversion from beating the SMU Mustangs in Week 9 before building an 11-point lead over the Miami Hurricanes in Week 10.

The Hurricanes (No. 8) and Mustangs (No. 9) look destined for a clash in the conference title game. SMU already punched its ticket to Charlotte thanks to its 7-0 record against ACC opponents, and the Hurricanes would join them with a win over Syracuse next Saturday.

The Clemson Tigers (No. 12) are the only other ACC team within the top 25, and they’d face SMU if the Orange find a way to upset Miami. Duke’s six votes leave them unofficially in 31st.
