5 things to know about new Bears assistant OL coach Luke Steckel

The Bears hired Luke Steckel as their assistant OL coach. Get to know Chicago’s new coach:

The Chicago Bears have hired former Tennessee Titans assistant coach Luke Steckel as their new assistant offensive line coach.

Steckel will work alongside offensive line coach Chris Morgan, who was hired last year, to help get this offensive line on track in 2023. There’s an argument to be made we could see an entirely new starting five in 2023, and it’s clear there’s plenty of work to be done to get this unit where it needs to be to help the offense as a whole.

Here are five things to know about the Bears’ newest assistant coach in Steckel:

Report: Bears hiring Titans’ Luke Steckel to offensive staff

Titans run-game analyst Luke Steckel has reportedly been hired by the Bears.

The Tennessee Titans’ tight ends coach role has led to some pretty significant promotions over the last few years.

Atlanta Falcons head coach, Arthur Smith, held that role with Tennessee from 2016-2018 before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2019. Once Smith left for Atlanta, Todd Downing eventually got the promotion from tight ends coach to offensive coordinator in 2021.

This time around, the Titans’ former tight ends coach isn’t receiving the type of promotion as the previous two.

After initially accepting a role as the run-game analyst after the Titans named Tony Dews as the new tight ends coach, Luke Steckel has decided to join the Chicago Bears’ offensive line staff, according to Sam Phalen of AtoZ Sports Nashville.

Per Chris Emma of 670 The Score, Steckel is taking a position as an assistant offensive line coach.

Steckel had been with the Titans since the 2013 season, quietly working his way up the coaching ranks. He also received an interview for the Los Angeles Chargers’ offensive coordinator vacancy this offseason.

Last season, Steckel’s tight ends were responsible for about 30 percent of  the Titans’ receptions on the year, with 64 percent of those receptions (54-of-85) going for first downs. He also had a hand in developing promising young tight end, Chigoziem Okonkwo.

The run-game analyst role was a new position created this offseason, so it will be interesting to see how Mike Vrabel goes about replacing that job on his staff going forward.

Chargers complete OC interview with Titans’ Luke Steckel

Titans TEs coach Luke Steckel has completed an interview for the Chargers’ OC job.

On Thursday, the Los Angeles Chargers announced they completed an interview with Tennessee Titans tight ends coach Luke Steckel for their offensive coordinator vacancy.

Steckel has been a coach in the NFL for 14 years, spending the last two as the tight ends coach in Nashville. He was a surprise candidate for Los Angeles, as he wasn’t on anyone’s radar in terms of offensive coordinator interviews.

The Titans are also in the market for an offensive coordinator, but the only in-house candidate they’ve interviewed is passing-game coordinator, Tim Kelly.

Tennessee has also reportedly expressed interest in three other candidates, including the Kansas City Chiefs’ Eric Bieniemy and Matt Nagy, and the Atlanta Falcons’ Charles London, all of whom have received requests to interview.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler revealed last week that Nagy was a “prime candidate” for the Titans. That’s the last update we’ve gotten on the outside candidates, none of whom have been confirmed to have completed an interview yet.

Two more candidates requested to interview for Chargers’ offensive coordinator position

The Chargers have now requested to interview four candidates.

The Chargers requested to interview Titans tight ends coach Luke Steckel and Rams senior offensive assistant Greg Olson for their offensive coordinator position.

Steckel has been on the Titans staff since 2013 and spent the last two seasons as the tight ends coach. Before that, Steckel worked as an offensive assistant and assistant wide receivers coach. Before his days with Tennessee, he was an assistant to the head coach with the Browns for four seasons.

Olson joined the Rams after spending the last four seasons as the Raiders’ offensive coordinator. He’s also been an offensive coordinator for the Jaguars, Buccaneers, Rams, and Lions. Olson also has over two decades of experience as a quarterbacks coach.

Los Angeles has now requested to interview four candidates for their offensive coordinator vacancy, with the other two being Zac Robinson and Jerrod Johnson.

Chargers to interview Titans TEs coach Luke Steckel for OC job

The Chargers will interview Titans TEs coach Luke Steckel for their offensive coordinator vacancy.

Tennessee Titans tight ends coach Luke Steckel is reportedly a candidate for the offensive coordinator job of the Los Angeles Chargers.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Chargers are set to interview Steckel sometime this week for their offensive coordinator vacancy, but an exact date was not given.

Steckel has been with the Titans for 10 seasons, with nine of them coming as an assistant. He was promoted to tight ends coach from offensive assistant in 2021 after Todd Downing was promoted to offensive coordinator.

Steckel’s biggest accomplishment in his short time as a position coach has to be tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo, who was the best rookie tight end in the NFL in 2022.

The Titans are in the market for their own offensive coordinator, so it’ll be interesting to see if Steckel will get an interview. Tennessee has interviewed one in-house candidate in passing game coordinator Tim Kelly.

They have also requested interviews with the Kansas City Chiefs’ Eric Bieniemy and Matt Nagy, and the Atlanta Falcons’ Charles London.
