Panthers speak to two more for offensive coordinator position

The Panthers interviewed two more candidates in their search for a new play-caller, including Deshaun Watson’s current offensive coordinator.

Whether they’re publicly or reportedly in or out on Deshaun Watson, the Carolina Panthers clearly have some sort of affinity for the Houston Texans quarterback. So don’t be surprised if they still try to position themselves for yet another shot at the legally troubled passer.

So, could this potentially be one of those moves?

As reported by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on Tuesday, the Panthers have spoken with current Texans offensive coordinator Tim Kelly for their open play-calling duties.

Kelly has been with Houston since 2014, when he was hired as an offensive quality control coach. He’s since added roles as an assistant offensive line coach, tight ends coach and quarterback coach to his résumé in addition to the offensive coordinator post.

Watson was drafted with the 12th overall pick of the 2017 draft, so he’s been attached to Kelly for his entire pro career. Kelly served as both Watson’s coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2020, where the three-time Pro Bowler notched career-highs in passing yards (4,823), passing touchdowns (33) and completion percentage (70.2) while throwing for his fewest amount of interceptions (seven) in a season.

Fowler notes the Panthers have also spoken with Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach Luke Getsy. Getsy has spent the last two seasons as the team’s passing game coordinator as well, working alongside some other decent passer you might’ve heard of named Aaron Rodgers.

Broncos have 10 candidates for head coach opening

“We’re going to be thorough,” Broncos GM George Paton said of the team’s coach search. “We know this is a critical decision, and we’re going to get it right.”

After firing head coach Vic Fangio on Sunday, Denver Broncos general manager George Paton is now responsible for finding Fangio’s replacement.

So far, Paton has requested interviews with ten coach candidates.

“We’re excited to learn more about some of these great candidates,” Paton said during his end-of-season press conference on Jan. 9. “It’s going to be a comprehensive and a collaborative process to find the best head coach for the Broncos. We’re going to be thorough. We’re going to be open minded. We know this is a critical decision, and we’re going to get it right.”

Most of the Broncos’ head coach interviews will happen next week, and Paton has said the team will take its time in its search, so fans shouldn’t expect a hire to happen immediately.

Bears want to interview Nathaniel Hackett, Broncos request interview with Luke Getsy

Two Packers assistant coaches on the offensive side are receiving interest for open head-coaching jobs.

Nathaniel Hackett will have the opportunity to interview with a division rival, while Luke Getsy is getting his first head-coaching interest.

The two assistant coaches for the Green Bay Packers will likely get a chance to speak to teams during the off week.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Chicago Bears requested an interview with Hackett, the Packers offensive coordinator. It’s his third reported interview request of the cycle, joining the Jacksonville Jaguars and Denver Broncos.

Hackett has been Matt LaFleur’s offensive coordinator for the last three years and has eight total years of NFL experience as a coordinator. Given the Packers’ success, interest in Hackett – who spread the LaFleur offense and provide valuable help at the quarterback position – was predictable.

Hackett becoming the coach of the Bears would sure add another layer to the NFC North rivalry.

Others on the staff are also getting looks.

Also according to Pelissero, the Broncos want to interview Getsy, the Packers quarterbacks coach and pass game coordinator.

An accomplished college quarterback, Getsy worked in Green Bay from 2014-17 before taking a job as the offensive coordinator at Miss. State. He returned to the Packers under LaFleur as the quarterbacks coach in 2019 and added pass game coordinator to his title last season.

If Hackett departs for a head-coaching job, Getsy would likely be a top candidate to replace him internally in Green Bay.
