BATON ROUGE, La. – Maya Tahan, a native of Tel Mond, Israel, has signed on with the LSU women’s tennis as a graduate transfer ahead of the 2023-24 season, head coach Taylor Fogleman announced on Wednesday.

“Chris (Simpson) and I are thrilled to welcome Maya to LSU!” Fogleman said. “She’s an incredibly driven and team-first young lady that everyone will gravitate towards. She’s been a major part of several top 10 teams during her time at Miami and has an immense amount of experience playing in the competitive ACC. I know everyone at LSU is going to really enjoy watching Maya compete. That competitive drive of hers is only outdone by how genuinely great she is a person. We’re humbled she’s coming to Baton Rouge!”

Tahan brings four years of experience in college tennis to the squad after graduating from the University of Miami in May. After enrolling as a freshman in January of 2020, she posted a singles record of 61-39 and a doubles tally of 51-42 while staying present in the singles and doubles lineup all four years.

She grabbed seven singles and two doubles wins in the 2020 spring season before COVID-19 cut the season short. When actions resumed for Miami in the spring of 2021, Tahan posted a 14-8 singles record and an 11-11 mark in doubles as she helped Miami reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Her doubles play was a crucial piece of success for the team as she and partner Diana Khodon earned five ranked wins, including three against foes in the top 10. They rose as high as No. 14 in the ITA Doubles Rankings and earned an at-large berth in the 2021 NCAA Doubles Championship.

Tahan’s third season as a Hurricane and first with a fall season saw her finish with a 19-14 mark in singles and a 20-12 record in doubles. Her 10-4 mark in singles play, including an 8-4 mark against ACC opposition that ranked her second on the team, helped the Hurricanes reach the round of 16 at the NCAA Tournament for the first time in four years. The Hurricanes finished No. 9 in the final ITA Team Rankings of the season, tying their highest finish in a decade.

In her final season in Miami, Tahan posted a 21-13 singles record and an 18-13 tally in doubles. Her 15 wins in dual matches came from the No. 5&6 courts, including two against ranked foes, ranked her third on the team. In doubles play alongside Daevenia Achong, the pair posted a 13-6 record at the top doubles spot. They picked up four ranked wins along the way and finished 10-3 in ACC play. Tahan and the Hurricanes season came to an end in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, where they narrowly fell by a score of 4-3 to the Auburn Tigers.

In addition to receiving her degree from Miami, Tahan also received academic honors along the way, being named an ITA Scholar Athlete in 2020 and a spot on the All-ACC Academic Team in 2022.

She is the third transfer signing of the summer, joining fellow graduate transfer Aran Teixidó Garcia of Memphis and junior Florentine Dekkers from Kansas State. She will join the team in Baton Rouge in August ahead of the 2023-24 season.

BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU women’s tennis’ Anastasiya Komar and Kylie Collins were named the No. 1 doubles duo in the final ITA Southern Regional rankings of the season.

The regional rankings are posted yearly by the ITA following the conclusion of the season. The regional rankings include the Top-10 Teams, Top-20 Singles, and Top-10 Doubles for every region. LSU was ranked No. 2 in team rankings, trailing only an Auburn team that finished in the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament. As a team, the Tigers finished the 2023 dual season with a 13-11 record, an eight-game improvement from their 5-14 record in 2022. The team returned to the NCAA Tournament in May after missing out last season.

Komar and Collins were ranked No. 1 after an 11-1 season playing together. The pair earned five wins over ranked foes and were named to the 2023 ITA Doubles All-American team for their effort.

The top doubles duo of Komar and Collins were joined by the sister pairing of Safiya and Noor Carrington in the doubles rankings at No. 10. The sisters claimed five wins when playing together, including two against ranked foes.

Four Tigers were also ranked in the singles rankings. Komar finished top of the leaderboard at No. 1, Collins No. 4, Safiya Carrington at No. 12 and Nina Geissler rounding it out at No. 17.

Komar became only the third player in program history to receive doubles and singles All-American honors in the same season, joining Bruna Colosio (2000) and Joana Valle Costa (2017).

Collins finished at No. 4 in the singles rankings. She concluded the 2022-23 season with 13 singles wins and was ever present in the rankings, rising as high as No. 7 and earning an at-large berth in the 2023 NCAA Singles Championship.

BATON ROUGE, La. – Florentine Dekkers, a native of Ammerzoden, Netherlands, has signed on with the LSU women’s tennis team after transferring from Kansas State, head coach Taylor Fogleman announced on Wednesday.

“Chris (Simpson) and I are incredibly excited and humble to welcome Flo to LSU,” Fogleman said. “She is an awesome young lady with an immense amount of ability. Dekkers is calling Baton Rouge after two seasons of competition at Kansas State. In that time, she picked up 18 wins in singles matches and 15 in doubles. She played most of her singles matches at the No. 1 spot for the Wildcats, picking up two ranked wins just this past season. In doubles, she played most of her matches at the No. 2 spot but has experience across all three spots with a variety of partners.

Outside of her action in NCAA matches, Dekkers also competed in a few pro tournaments in 2022. She advanced to the singles main draw through qualifying stages twice: first at the W15 Alkmaar in June and then at the W15 Hilton Head in September.

Prior to her time at Kansas State, Dekkers’ UTR rose as high as 10.34 with strong play in local tournaments in the Netherlands as well as ITF junior tournaments. 2019 was a strong year for her in junior tournaments as she claimed the J5 singles and doubles title in Dijon, a J5 doubles title in Limassol and the J4 doubles crown in Almere.

She has also enjoyed academic success thus far in her collegiate career, earning a spot on the 2021-22 Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team and ITA Scholar Athlete honors in 2022.

Dekkers joins graduate transfer Aran Teixidó Garcia of Memphis and blue-chip Kinaa Graham as signings in the 2022-23 class. The trio will join up with the team in August ahead of the 2023-24 season.

Anastasiya Komar Named SEC Co-Player of the Week for LSU women’s tennis

Komar was perfect in singles and doubles play this week.

Editor’s Note: The following is an official press release courtesy of LSU’s athletics department.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Redshirt freshman Anastasiya Komar of the LSU women’s tennis team has been named the SEC Co-Player of the Week alongside Texas A&M’s Mary Stoiana, the league office announced on Wednesday.

The conference honor is Komar’s first in her collegiate career and adds another accolade to a tremendous debut campaign for the Tigers. The Minsk, Belarus native joined the program in the spring of 2022, but sat out the season due to an injury.

This past week, Komar helped the Tigers secure their third and fourth SEC wins of the season by going perfect in both singles and doubles. On Friday night against Mississippi State, Komar and doubles partner Kylie Collins gave LSU the perfect start to the match with a 6-3 win over Emma Antonaki and Dharani Niroshan at the top doubles court. The Tigers would go on to claim the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead in the match. In singles, Komar earned her eighth ranked singles win after defeating No. 104 Antonaki in a come-from-behind effort. Komar dropped the first set, 6-4, but replied with a 6-3 win in the second to force a third. The third set saw the two players split the first ten games, 5-5, but Komar won the final two games to win the set, 7-5, and clinch victory.

On Sunday’s match against Ole Miss, Komar and Collins improved to 8-0 in doubles when playing together with a 6-3 win over Lillian Gabrielsen and Kelsey Mize at the top court. The Tigers went on to claim the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead into singles. In singles, Komar scored LSU’s first singles point of the afternoon after getting a straight set win over No. 69 Ludmila Kareisova. Komar edged set one, 6-4, and went on to comfortably win the second by a score of 6-2. The win was her ninth against a ranked opponent this season and gave LSU a 2-1 lead in the match. The Tigers would go on to win the match, 5-2.

With her wins this past weekend, Komar became the first LSU women’s tennis player to reach 30 singles wins in an overall season since 2016. Additionally, her nine singles wins in SEC matches thus far this season ties her for most in the conference. As a result of her recent success, she moved to a new career high of No. 17 in the latest ITA singles rankings and stayed in the top 10 in doubles with Kylie Collins at No. 10.

Komar and the Tigers are back on the courts this weekend for the final pair of regular season matches, opening with an away match at Vanderbilt at noon CT on Friday, April 14.

The Tigers move 11-8 on the year.

Editor’s Note: The following is an official press release courtesy of LSU’s athletics department.

BATON ROUGE, La. – The LSU women’s tennis team (11-8, 4-7 SEC) celebrated the playing career of four graduating players with a strong 5-2 win over the Ole Miss Rebels (9-10, 3-8 SEC) on Sunday afternoon at the LSU Tennis Complex.

Taylor’s Thoughts
“Really good performance again today from our ladies,” head coach Taylor Fogleman said. “We’re so happy to be able to give Safiya (Carrington), Maggie (Cubitt), Nina (Geissler) and Mia (Rabinowitz) a win in their final home match! They’ve done so much for this program during their times here and we’re really grateful to have had the opportunity to work with them this past year.”

“We certainly have more tennis ahead of us and we can keep improving in areas, but it’s important to be able to have a day like today and enjoy these moments.”

Doubles Results
LSU celebrated its senior day ceremony 15 minutes before the match, honoring the playing careers of graduate student Mia Rabinowitz and the senior trio of Safiya Carrington, Maggie Cubitt and Nina Geissler.

Following the ceremony, the Tigers and Rebels jumped into action in doubles. No. 7 Kylie Collins and Anstasiya Komar continued their hot streak and won at the No. 1 court, 6-3, over Lillian Gabrielsen and Kelsey Mize.

The Rebels pulled one back at the No. 3 court, where Ludmila Kareisova and Emma Kette defeated Geissler and Nikita Vishwase, 6-2.

The doubles point went to the Tigers after No. 72-ranked Noor and Safiya Carrington held off a charge from Anaelle Leclercq and Rachel Krzyak to win 6-4 and give LSU a 1-0 lead in the match.

Singles Results
Ole Miss scored the first singles point of the afternoon from the No. 6 court, where Reka Zadori defeated Rabinowitz by a score of 6-0, 6-1 to tie the match up at 1-1.

No. 22 Komar earned her 30th singles win of the season and her ninth against a ranked foe after taking down No. 69 Kareisova in straight sets at the top court. Komar and Kareisova played a close first set against each other, but Komar edged her opponent by a score of 6-4. The second set saw Komar maintain control throughout and only drop two games to win 6-2 and put the Tigers back in the lead.

Moments later at the No. 2 spot, Collins made it 3-1 on the day after getting a straight set win over Leclercq. Collins played a tremendous first set and blanked her opponent, 6-0, before battling back from an early deficit in the second to win 6-4. The win takes her total on the season to 12.

The senior Geissler clinched match victory for LSU on senior day with a straight set win over Kryzak at the No. 4 spot. Geissler won the first set, 6-3, and repeated the scoreline in the second to make it 4-1 in the match and guarantee a senior day victory for her and her teammates. The win was Geissler’s 13th this season and her fourth in conference play.

LSU’s final singles point of the day came from the No. 5 court, where Vishwase defeated doubles-foe Kette in three sets. Vishwase edged her opponent, 6-4, in set one before Kette replied with a 7-5 come-from-behind win in the second set to extend the match. Since the match was clinched before the third set, the two played a ten-point tiebreaker to decide their court. In the tiebreaker, Vishwase took an early lead and didn’t look back as she won 10-4 and made it 5-1 in the team match. For Vishwase, the win is her 15th of the season, fourth in conference play and her third straight.

Ole Miss grabbed the final point of the match after Gabrielsen defeated Safiya Carrington at the No. 3 court. Carrington claimed the first set, 6-4, but Gabrielsen battle back with a 6-3 win in the second to force the match into a third set. Versus Georgia
LSU is seeking its fifth win in program history over the Bulldogs on Friday night. When the teams met last season in Georgia, the Bulldogs came out on top in a 4-1 contest.

The Bulldogs have only dropped three matches this season heading into Friday’s contest, losing twice to top ranked North Carolina (5-2 at North Carolina and 4-0 at ITA National Team Indoors) and the other loss coming on the road at then-No. 11 Ohio State, 4-0. Georgia has opened SEC play with a perfect 7-0 start and has won every conference match by three or more points.

Strong singles play has been key for Georgia this season as the Bulldogs have a record of 56-20 across all six singles spots, a 73.7% win ration. Their top two players, No. 8 Lea Ma and No. 10 Dasha Vidmanova, have a combined record of 23-3 at the top two singles court in dual play. Ma, a senior from Dix Hills, New York, is a perfect 7-0 in SEC play at the No. 1 singles court.

Tiger Tidbits
LSU dropped two away matches last time out, narrowly falling 4-3 at No. 11 Auburn on Friday and then dropping Sunday’s match at Alabama, 4-2.

Anastasiya Komar continues to lead from the front for the Tigers this spring in both singles and doubles play. In singles, she enters Friday match with a perfect 14-0 record in dual matches and has scored a point in all but one match this season. The Belarus native was moved to the top singles spot in conference play last week, where she marked the occasion with a straight set win over No. 32 Carolyn Ansari of Auburn and another straight set win over Alabama’s Loudmilla Bencheikh. In doubles, she has a team-leading 10-3 record in dual matches with four different partners.

Experienced seniors Safiya Carrington and Nina Geissler have enjoyed singles success in conference play, going 4-2 and 3-3 respectively. Carrington’s 14 singles wins on the overall season is the second most on the team while Geissler’s 12 ties her for third most.

Two Tigers are ranked in singles, and one doubles duo is ranked in the ITA rankings. In singles, Kylie Collins checked in at No. 22 while Anastasiya Komar joins her at No. 27. LSU’s leading doubles pair of Komar and freshman Nikita Vishwase moved to No. 30 after a few weeks of not playing together.  As a team, LSU moved to No. 43 in this week’s ranking update.

LSU has earned the doubles point in 11 matches out of 15 this season and has a 27-11 record across the three courts. The No. 1 spot is 10-2, No. 2 narrowly trails at 8-3 and the No. 3 court has a record of 8-6.

Taylor’s Thoughts
“The ladies came out and set the tone in doubles today,” head coach Taylor Fogleman said. “I told the team in the locker room that that was probably our best doubles performance all season. We’ve usually had two courts give us wins which has secured a lot of doubles points this season, but we felt all three courts performed phenomenally today.”

“We knew Arkansas is a very gritty team and they showed it today, credit to Christina (Sanchez-Quintanar, head coach) and Tucker (Clary, assistant coach) for the great job they do over there. They made us earn it today, but I’m very proud of our team for staying poised and consistent with their own game styles today and that got us over the line today. A thank you to our awesome support at today’s match as well!”

Komar regained her footing in the third set and only dropped one game as she cruised to a 6-1 win to secure the win. With the win, Komar improved to 10-0 in dual matches and took her season-total wins to 24 on the year.

The Razorbacks’ final point of the match came from the top court, where Keller upset No. 17 Collins. Keller claimed the first set by a score of 6-3 and held Collins off in a long second set that required a tiebreaker, which Keller won by a close margin of 7-4.

Graduate student Mia Rabinowitz grabbed her second consecutive clinch point of the weekend as she took down Kacie Harvey in straight sets at the No. 6. The first set required a tiebreaker to decide it, which Rabinowitz narrowly edged by a margin of 8-6. The win was Rabinowitz’s fourth in dual matches this season and her eighth overall.
