Why LSU Will Win

Can LSU crank its game up a few notches even though this doesn’t matter that much?

Of course it matters. It’s an SEC game against Texas A&M, and winning is a must to stay in the national title chase, but whether it’s by one or 41, beating Georgia next week in the SEC Championship is everything to the College Football Playoff chase.

First, the Tigers have to roll through an A&M team that’s struggling way too much to get the offense going.

Yeah, the weather wasn’t great, but 20 points against UMass wasn’t anything special for A&M in last week’s win.

The passing attack is painfully inconsistent and not sharp enough, it’s awful on third downs, and worst of all considering the team’s style under Jimbo Fisher, the O isn’t controlling the clock.

However …

Why Texas A&M Will Win

The pressure is all on the other side of the field.

LSU does need to win this and it does need to be relatively impressive. The College Football Playoff thing might be a media discussion, but this team knows what’s at stake.

It knows it might just have a shot to play in the tournament if it can win next week, and … that’s next week. This week it gets a Texas A&M team that’s going to pull out all the stops in its final game of the season.

The LSU offensive line is struggling against anyone with a pass rush. Texas A&M struggles up front, but it should have its moments.

LSU lost to Florida State away from Baton Rouge. It was in a fight until the final few minutes at Florida. It couldn’t throw in the 13-10 win over Arkansas, and it struggled in the 21-17 at Auburn. Granted, LSU won three true road games against okay-to-mediocre SEC teams, but all were tough to get through.

Again, this is where the Texas A&M defensive line has to rise up. LSU is 9-0 when it runs for over 175 and 0-2 when it doesn’t. Texas A&M has allowed more than 175 rushing yards six times and all four wins came when it gave up fewer than five yards per carry.

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Texas A&M is going to make this very, very scary for LSU.

The home side has won the last five games in the series, and the Aggies are going to play like this is everything for the program. Win, and it’ll make the next nine months a whole lot easier – and promising.

But the offense just isn’t there.

A&M will fight the good fight, but LSU will push through late with the scoring drives it needed to get to Atlanta with the CFP dreams still alive.

Game Details: LSU goes for season sweep over Texas A&M

LSU looks to end another skid as they head to College Station.

On Tuesday night LSU Tigers men’s basketball head coach Will Wade will get another opportunity to hit 100 career wins. The fourth time is the charm, right?

Not only is the time trying to get the milestone win for their head coach but they are also looking to stop the skid as they face the Aggies again. LSU came roaring back against Texas A&M in their last matchup to stop a three-game losing streak.

The first time it came before losses to Arkansas, Alabama, and Tennessee. This time around the Tigers are coming off losses to Texas Christian, Ole Miss, and Vanderbilt ahead of their trip to College Station.

Head coach Will Wade is hoping to inject some confidence into this team. “I mean look, we’ve got to inject a little confidence in our guys,” Wade said on Saturday. “we’ve got to get back to certainly playing better than we are now.”

The team needs to have a healthy Xavier Pinson on the floor, something they haven’t had since their first game against the Vols. He sat against Vanderbilt as a chance to let his injured knee heal. The team relied on Darius Days and Tari Eason, as well as Eric Gaines running the offense.

The trio poured in double-digits in points and Days added a double-double with 10 rebounds. It just wasn’t enough after falling behind by 21 points to the Commodores. The key for the Tigers against the Aggies will be staying within striking distance if they get off to a slow start again.

The Tigers will return home on Saturday to host Mississippi State and Georgia before their next road trip. The hope is that LSU can get right over the next four games before battling Kentucky in Lexington.

Instant Analysis: Takeaways from the LSU Tigers win over Texas A&M

Five takeaways from the LSU victory over Texas A&M

The LSU Tigers men’s basketball team was finally able to get off the snide after a three-game losing streak. They were back at the PMAC, in front of a raucous crowd.

They were once again without starting point guard Xavier Pinson and standout forward Darius Days would also watch the game in street clothes. This meant that Tari Eason, Eric Gaines, and Brandon Murray were going to have to shoulder the load on offense.

Late in the game, the Tigers found themselves in a hole. Down five points and time running out. After it went back and forth, LSU was down 64-61 with 1:49 left in the game. The defense would tighten up and the Aggies wouldn’t score again.

Mwani Wilkinson hit a corner three-point shot to tie the game up at 64 with 1:19 to go. In the final 40 seconds of the game, Gaines and Murray would go 6-6 at the charity stripe to give LSU the 70-64 win.

We broke down five takeaways from the game.

Which LSU games land on ESPN’s top 100 of 2021?

Four of the LSU Tigers games from the 2021 campaign made the list for the top 100 games of the season (subscription required). Not all of them are on the winning side of things.

No. 61: Auburn 24, LSU 19

Scott Clause-The Daily Advertiser/USA TODAY Sports

LSU came into the game at 3-1 and looking to continue their winning ways against Auburn in Death Valley. However, they had other ideas as the Purple and Gold forgot how to sack Bo Nix. He was able to get his team off the losing end in Baton Rouge for the first time this century.

What ESPN Says…

The Bo Nix game. Auburn won in Baton Rouge for the first time since 1999, thanks in part to … whatever this was.

No. 59: Alabama 20, LSU 14

Butch Dill-USA TODAY Sports

LSU came into the Alabama game reeling. Losers of three of the last four games and needing to get two wins in their final four to become bowl eligible. The defense came after Bryce Young, Orgeron called for fake punts to the backup tight end. They laid it all out on the line but failed to pull off the upset with multiple chances late in this game.

What ESPN Says…

Coming off of a bye week and playing with nothing to lose, LSU threw things at Bryce Young that it hadn’t shown all year, and it worked. Alabama scored 20 points in a five-minute span midgame but was otherwise held scoreless, and LSU twice had the ball in Bama territory with a chance to take a late lead but couldn’t get the job done.

Next, an offensive outburst

Week 13 Observations: Ed Orgeron goes out on top

Coach O goes out on top.

It was a wild night in Death Valley. On a night that we would see Ed Orgeron coach for the final time in the regular season, we didn’t know it was his final game period. Had the Tigers lost, it would have been his final game. However, a last-minute drive sent the Bayou Bengals into the postseason and defeated Texas A&M at home once again. Since the Aggies joined the SEC, the Tigers have owned the series. Improving to 8-2 since 2012.

It was an emotional night and not one that Coach O will soon forget. They avoided their first losing season since 1999. Before we look to the potential bowl matchup, one final look back at Orgeron’s final night with an observation from our colleagues.

Erick Smith of USA TODAY Sports laid out his week 13 observations with a nod to now former LSU Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron. Coach O finished his career at LSU with a 51-20 record and the 2019 national championship.

Say whatever you want about the outgoing LSU coach, his players never stopped playing for him and he never stopped wanting to coach them. That’s a rarity in college football. When coaches are let go, they almost always walk out the door, rather than be a lame duck for the rest of the season.

Orgeron didn’t care about that. He remained committed to a program that was his dream job. His players rewarded him with one last victory in Tiger Stadium with an unlikely comeback defeat of No. 14 Texas A&M. LSU avoided its first losing season since 1999 — the year before Nick Saban arrived.

Orgeron said after the game he will not coach the team in a bowl game, leaving his record at the school at 51-20 with one remarkable national championship that should be remembered as one of the all-time great teams.

Five takeaways from the last minute win for LSU over Texas A&M

Five takeaways, plus a bonus from the LSU Tigers win over Texas A&M.

It was a wild ride on Saturday night in Death Vallery. The LSU Tigers needed a win to avoid their first losing season since 1999. They also needed a win to get to a bowl game. A game that was full of highs and lows, plus plenty of drama.

LSU got the night started off with a 10-point lead and took it into the second half, when the wheels started to come off the unthinkable happened. Max Johnson was punished throughout the night but it was one last drive that sent Tigers Stadium into a frenzy.

It was a special senior day for the Tigers as they went out as winners. The team will now get one more game to finish 7-6. We break down five takeaways from the game.

Ed Orgeron, LSU find late magic to knock off Texas A&M 27-24

Max Johnson, Jaray Jenkins send Texas A&M away with late rally.

The magic has not run out for the LSU Tigers and Ed Orgeron. Facing a four-point deficit with under two minutes remaining in the game, Max Johnson engineered the comeback. After taking multiple sacks on the night, he found a way. The team faced a second and five from their own 20 when the lefty was sacked and the Tigers had a third and 11. It came down to a fourth and six when the offense really got rolling.

Johnson found Jack Bech to keep the game going with an 11-yard catch and run. On the next play, it was Jaray Jenkins, who showed up again for the offense. He went for 31 yards and Malik Nabers added another 11 to get them to the Aggies’ 28-yard line. After a pair of incompletions, Johnson found Jenkins again for the touchdown. LSU took the lead with just 0:20 left on the clock.

It was all up to the defense that had kept the team in games time and time again. Damone Clark was the hero late in this game as he was able to throw Texas A&M quarterback Zach Calzada to the turn to all but end it. The back-to-back sacks by the senior linebacker sealed the victory. The Tigers will end the season 6-6 and become bowl eligible.

After leading 17-7 at the half, it appeared to unravel for the Tigers as their offense became stagnant. However, it was the sophomore quarterback that was able to will this team to a win to avoid the first losing season since 1999. The Tigers will now likely look at a Texas Bowl appearance against a Big 12 opponent. For now, Orgeron gets to go out on top as they await their bowl invite next week.

LSU heads into halftime leading No. 15 Texas A&M, 17-7

Recapping the first half.

The LSU Tigers kicked off the game getting the ball. The offense was able to eat up some clock as they went down the field in 6:20 to set up a field goal by Cade York after a 12-play drive. After taking the 3-0 lead, the Tigers defense forced a punt from the Texas A&M offense.

The offense found a little of movement on their second drive but it ultimately ended with a kick. Avery Atkins pinned the Aggies deep in their own territory for the second drive of the game. The Tigers defense was up for the task as they forced the offense to give the ball back to the LSU offense.

After the first quarter, the LSU defense shut out the Aggies offense, limiting them to just 21 total yards. On third and one, Max Johnson took matters into his own hands finding Jaray Jenkins down the sideline for the 45-yard touchdown. Tigers were up 10-0 at that point.

On the following drive from Texas A&M, they found some room in the passing game. As they got to midfield, the Tigers were able to force a fourth and one but the defense wouldn’t stop Jared Wydermyer on the play to extend the drive. Facing another third down, the Tigers played good coverage. BJ Ojulari brings pressure on a stunt, and Zach Calzada falls to the turf when trying to scramble to force another punt.

The Tigers were unable to take advantage of the forced punt and would end up giving it right back. Calzada would enter the blue medical tent after their drive but he was back out for the next Aggies drive. He led them right down the field and into the red zone. Facing a third down Calzada was able to escape the pressure from Damone Clark for the touchdown. Moose Muhammad III was the recipient of the pass.

Johnson scramble got the offense a conversion to get the drive rolling for LSU. A block in the back by Ty Davis-Price put the Tigers’ offense behind the chains. They stopped TDP on first and 17, then a pass to him on second down left LSU with third and 10 but the pass was broken up leading to another punt.

On the ensuing drive facing a second and nine, Jaquelin Roy sacks Calzada. The coverage doing its job on the play. Texas A&M would run the ball with just over a minute remaining, and they would punt it right back. Trey Palmer took a screen pass from Johnson for the 61-yard touchdown. Tigers lead 17-7.

LSU vs Texas A&M: How to watch the regular season finale

Game day is here. How to tune in for LSU-Texas A&M.

The final game of the season has arrived for the LSU Tigers and Texas A&M Aggies. As Rivalry week features huge matchups like Bedlam between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, The Iron Bowl between Alabama and Auburn, we have the Aggies and Tigers. A win would be huge for both teams involved.

LSU needs a win over Texas A&M to become bowl eligible and to avoid their first losing season since 1999. A win for the Aggies will help improve their bowl seeding. Any shot at a New Year Six game has disappeared after their loss to Ole Miss.

Of course, there is the Jimbo Fisher storyline. We don’t expect Fisher to leave the Aggies for the Tigers but it has been a talking point for a while now. Don’t expect it to not be brought up today. Let’s look at how to tune in for the game.
