The good, bad, and the ugly from LSU’s win over McNeese

It wasn’t all sunshine and daffodils for the LSU Tigers on Saturday night in the 27-point victory.

The LSU Tigers responded in the way you would hope coming off the loss to UCLA, by getting the win in their home opener. Head coach Ed Orgeron is 15-1 coming off a loss with the lone loss coming last year against Alabama after losing to Texas A&M the week prior. The Tigers defeated McNeese 34-7 but the win felt more like a loss.

When it comes to playing an FCS team, you either dominate the game or expect a lot of questions to follow. This game served as the first opportunity to address the warts that showed against UCLA. The team couldn’t protect the quarterback or run the ball effectively. They couldn’t stop the big plays down the field or in the running game. Some of those issues were corrected, while others need a magnifying glass as we look under the hood of this team.

Since LSU won their game, we will start with the good from the 27-point win over the Cowboys from nearby Lake Charles, Lousiana.

Cade York sets record at Tiger Stadium, breaks it in the second half

Cade York sets a record for the longest field goal in Tiger Stadium only to break it in the fourth quarter.

If there is one constant with this LSU Tigers football team, it has to do with one man. He wears No. 36.

Tigers kicker Cade York was one of the bright spots of the game between LSU and McNeese. While head coach Ed Orgeron still has plenty to address with the team, their kicking game isn’t one of them. The team’s punt Avery Atkins has shown the ability to boot the ball and be a solid tackler on special teams.

Then you have preseason All-American kicker Cade York, as he showed last season against the Florida Gators, he is a weapon from deep. He nailed a 57-yard field goal in the Swamp to give LSU the upset win. York showed off his kicking prowess against McNeese on Saturday night in Death Valley once again.

Late in the second quarter, McNeese punted the ball to LSU after going three and out. The Tigers starting from their own 44-yard line. The offense only mustered up 19 yards and set up a 55-yard attempt for York. He stepped up and nailed the kick to give LSU the 17-0 lead heading into the half. That kick set a Tiger Stadium record for the longest field goal made. That record stood for all of one quarter of play.

The offense got the ball following another three and out from McNeese at midfield. This time the offense could only get 12 yards on six plays before York trotted onto the field once again. He nailed a 56-yard field goal with 14:55 left in the game, breaking his own record.

Cade York is now 12/14 from 50+ yards out in his Tigers career. If it comes down to a big-time kick for LSU, they can rest easy knowing the Texas native has plenty of leg to convert from anywhere.

Instant Analysis: Five takeaways from the LSU-McNeese game

Five takeaways from the LSU Tigers in-state matchup with the McNeese Cowboys

Last week the defense had plenty of struggles in the loss to UCLA, this time around they played with a much different attitude.

The LSU Tigers defense was able to blank the McNeese offense led by Cody Orgeron. By the time the fourth quarter rolled around, the defense was absolutely punishing the opposing quarterback. Orgeron was able to get one touchdown against his dad on a 44-yard screen pass to Carlo Williams, ending the shutout bid.

On offense, the Tigers played both scholarship quarterbacks in this game. Johnson threw three touchdowns again this week, two of which went the way of Kayshon Boutte. Trey Palmer caught the opening score of the game for the Bayou Bengals on a fourth-down play.

Garrett Nussmeier would take over late in the third quarter, he would lead two scoring drives. He would finish three for 10 with 19 yards passing. His receivers did him no favors with drops. However, the Tigers get the win 34-7 and look towards the Central Michigan Chippewas next week.

The five quick takeaways from this week’s game:

LSU vs McNeese: First half highlights as the Tigers lead 17-0

Highlights and stats from the first half of the LSU-McNeese game.

It was tough sledding for the LSU Tigers early on in the home opener against McNeese. After forcing the punt by the Cowboys, the home team struggled on third downs very early on. The offense needed two fourth-down conversions to get into the end zone for the first time.

The defense didn’t allow McNeese to gain any traction, but the lack of offensive execution kept the Cowboys in this game. At least in the first half. The unit was able to set up the second touchdown of the game. A fumble recovered by Jaquelin Roy set up the offense at the Cowboys’ 28-yard line. A 21-yard run by Ty Davis-Price got the team in the redzone. Johnson found Kayshon Boutte for a three-yard touchdown reception.

On the next drive, it stalled in McNeese territory but Cade York put them on the board once again. He boomed a kick from 55-yards out after Johnson was sacked on third down.

Tigers led at halftime, 17-0

Stats:

Max Johnson: 13/19 104 yards, 2 TDs

Ty Davis-Price: 5 carries, 28 yards

Trey Palmer: 3 receptions, 30 yards, TD

Jack Bech: 3 receptions, 43 yards

Kayshon Boutte: 3 receptions, 14 yards, TD

Highlights:

The Tigers started the scoring when quarterback Max Johnson found Trey Palmer on the 19-yard strike.

In the second quarter, Johnson finds Kayshon Boutte for the easy three-yard touchdown reception.

NSFW: LSU head coach Ed Orgeron rips into the offense during practice

Coach O wasn’t pleased with his offense during practice on Wednesday.

Coming up on Saturday the team will take on in-state foe McNeese State. Just because of the lower-level opponent, don’t think the team will take it lightly in preparing for the upcoming game. LSU head coach Ed Orgeron even used NSFW language to try and get through to his offense.

Emotions running high after the LSU Tigers fell to UCLA on Saturday. During practice, Orgeron ripped into the offense. As the team prepares for an FCS opponent on Saturday, the coach wasn’t pleased with the effort from his offense during a run-through.

Orgeron said, “Get your mind right, and let’s [expletive] practice hard.”

Despite the offense racking up a total of 24 first downs, 379 yards of total offense, and three touchdowns, this team was anything but sharp in the opener. Max Johnson missed a couple of touchdown throws, sailed one ball that led to an interception, and lacked consistency against a power five opponent.

The running game did the team no favors while averaging two yards per attempt against the Bruins. They were able to throw the ball, but Johnson faced relentless pressure in the game. Completing just four of 14 passes when pressured. That led to his lone interception in the game.

LSU (0-1) vs McNeese (0-1) Game Preview

Why McNeese Will Win

No, that’s not the Cowboy team that’s going to show up over the rest of the season.

McNeese is stronger than it looked in a 42-36 loss to West Florida. The pass defense crashed, there were way too many penalties, and the offense is even better than the big performance it came up with.

Obviously it would take something insane to beat LSU, but a certain QB with a familiar last name – Cody Orgeron – knows how to wing the ball around the yard, the receiving weapons are there, and the team is solid at controlling the clock and the tempo.

However …

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why LSU Will Win

West Florida was able to bomb away at will on the McNeese secondary.

LSU might have lost to UCLA 38-27, and the running game went nowhere, but Max Johnson was terrific throwing for 330 yards and three scores, and Kayshon Boutte announced his arrival as the next great LSU superstar receiver with an unstoppable performance.

Beating up the Cowboys won’t mean much of anything, but this is a tune-up game the Tigers could’ve used before facing UCLA. The O will be able to do whatever it wants.

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

LSU will put this away after two drives. There’s this, then next up is Central Michigan, and then the SEC slate kicks in with a relatively manageable start.

There’s a chance to start to look great in a big hurry after the flop in Pasadena, and it starts with sharpening everything else up in the paycheck scrimmage.
