Report: Sage Ryan withdraws from transfer portal

Sage Ryan was spotted at bowl practice Tuesday despite announcing he’d be entering the portal.

LSU took a major loss in the secondary last week as cornerback [autotag]Sage Ryan[/autotag] announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal.

While Ryan said his decision was “effective immediately,” he hasn’t formally entered the transfer portal. And according to a report from The Advocate’s Wilson Alexander, there’s reason to believe he may be second-guessing that decision.

Per Alexander, Ryan participated in bowl practice on Tuesday after missing a team meeting on Monday. This, paired with comments from [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] that everyone who appeared in the last game would be available for the bowl game, would seem to imply Ryan plans to play in the bowl.

Whether he’s contemplating staying at LSU is unclear, but it would be a major boost if he did. A former five-star recruit, Ryan began his career mostly playing safety and nickel but moved to the outside to help with depth issues this season.

He ultimately started nine games, bringing much-needed consistency to the cornerback position, which was down quite a few players by the end of the season.

According to Alexander, defensive linemen [autotag]Tygee Hill[/autotag] and [autotag]Fitzgerald West[/autotag] were the only other scholarship players in the portal who practiced on Tuesday.

UPDATE: Ryan will officially remain at LSU and withdraw from the transfer portal. The news was first reported by Lonn Phillips Sullivan of LSU Odyssey.

Former LSU offensive lineman commits to another SEC school

A former LSU offensive lineman has announced where he will be playing as a graduate transfer next fall.

A former LSU offensive lineman has announced where he will be playing as a graduate transfer next fall. [autotag]Marlon Martinez[/autotag] has decided to stay in the SEC and move a few hours north from Baton Rouge, Louisiana to Starkville, Mississippi.

Martinez is a 6-foot-5, 330-pound offensive lineman who has played in Baton Rouge for the last four years. He has appeared in 45 games making four starts over that span. Martinez is a guy who can play at any position on the offensive line and he saw a lot of playing time at center during the spring as [autotag]Charles Turner[/autotag] was out with an injury.

That versatility is why he has played in 12 games a year during his sophomore, junior, and senior seasons.

Martinez recently graduated from LSU with a degree in marketing and then decided to enter his name into the transfer portal as a graduate transfer. Martinez chose to leave LSU for Mississippi State next fall.

Breaking down LSU transfer QB addition AJ Swann

Here’s what LSU’s getting with Vanderbilt QB transfer AJ Swann.

LSU added to its quarterback room on Monday, picking up a commitment from Vanderbilt transfer [autotag]AJ Swann[/autotag].

The addition wasn’t a surprise. It had been known LSU was in the market for a QB with some experience and several years of eligibility remaining.

Swann fits that bill. The rising junior appeared in 15 games in two seasons at Vanderbilt but has two years of eligibility left and potentially more if he redshirts in 2024.

[autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] is expected to be LSU’s starter in 2024. But Swann is a guy who can push him and adds insurance should Nussmeier get hurt.

Before adding Swann, LSU lacked a backup QB with any meaningful experience. That makes this a critical pickup.

Let’s take a look at what LSU’s getting in its newest QB.

BREAKING: LSU lands a quarterback in the transfer portal

Garrett Nussmeier will have some new competition in the quarterback room in 2024.

[autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] will have some new competition in the quarterback room in 2024.

With [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] leaving Baton Rouge for the NFL, there is an opening at the quarterback spot for LSU. Nusmeier is presumed to be the next man in line for the spot but things may have just changed.

LSU landed former Vanderbilt quarterback [autotag]AJ Swann[/autotag] from the transfer portal on Monday. Swann is a sophomore from White, Georgia, where he played for Cherokee High School. Swann has appeared in 15 games over the past two seasons. He made 12 starts for the Commodores and threw for 2,731 yards, 22 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.

His career completion percentage is 56% but take those numbers with a grain of salt given his team and the caliber of competition.

Going from the worst team in the SEC year-after-year to one of the best teams in the SEC could elevate his game, but he will have to beat out Nussmeier, [autotag]Rickie Collins[/autotag] and incoming four-star 2024 recruit [autotag]Colin Hurley[/autotag] for the starting job.

Former LSU defensive end Quency Wiggins commits to Colorado

Quency Wiggins will join Coach Prime in Boulder.

LSU defensive end transfer [autotag]Quency Wiggins[/autotag] has committed to Colorado. He announced his portal decision on Sunday.

A former four-star recruit and top-100 prospect from Baton Rouge, Wiggins will now join coach Deion Sanders in his second season as he looks to bounce back from a disappointing first campaign for the Buffaloes.

Wiggins appeared in five games including the Citrus Bowl in 2022, preserving a redshirt, and while he was expected to compete for a starting spot in 2023, he ultimately appeared in just four games for the Tigers and totaled only three tackles.

He’ll have three remaining years of eligibility at his new school.

Wiggins will look to revitalize his career as he joins Prime Time in Boulder.

LSU to host Mississippi State cornerback transfer for visit, per report

The Tigers are hosting one of the best cornerbacks in the portal this weekend.

LSU has already landed one Mississippi State transfer this offseason in receiver [autotag]Zavion Thomas[/autotag], and its looking to land one of his teammates as well in cornerback [autotag]Decamerion Richardson[/autotag].

According to a report from 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz, the Tigers will be hosting the veteran transfer. Like Thomas, he’s a Louisiana native who hails from Cullen and played his high school ball at Bossier.

Richardson will be a fifth-year senior in 2024, and he brings quite a bit of SEC experience to the table. He’s appeared in 45 games in four years in Starkville, making 26 starts including every game over the past two seasons.

According to Zenitz, Richardson has also visited Oregon.

Cornerback depth was a major issue for the Tigers in 2023, and with one of its top contributors entering the portal in [autotag]Sage Ryan[/autotag], landing a plug-and-play starter like Richardson would be huge.

LSU lands Mississippi State WR transfer Zavion Thomas

LSU has added a talented wide receiver to next year’s team.

LSU has just added a talented wide receiver to next year’s team. One of Louisiana’s own is coming back home.

[autotag]Zavion Thomas[/autotag] is a 5-foot-11, 190-pound wide receiver from Woodmere, Louisiana. Thomas committed to Mississippi State out of high school and he has since spent two years with the Bulldogs and played in 22 games. This season, he made 40 receptions for 503 yards and one touchdown.

Thomas makes plays in more ways than just a wide receiver. He is one of the best kick returners in the NCAA. In six kick returns this year, Thomas had six returns for 202 yards and one touchdown. His lone touchdown was a 94-yard touchdown return. He will be a dangerous player on special teams for LSU next year.

With [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] and [autotag]Brian Thomas Jr.[/autotag] likely leaving LSU to go to the NFL, the Tigers will need some experienced wide receivers to help teach the young players the ropes.

NEW: LSU lands first transfer portal commitment from former Texas A&M safety

Jardin Gilbert, who attended University Lab in Baton Rouge, started 13 games over the last two seasons for the Aggies.

LSU has been a bit more deliberate about the portal process this time around, and the team hasn’t been as active as it was the last two offseasons. But coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and staff made their first splash on Friday with the commitment of former Texas A&M safety [autotag]Jardin Gilbert[/autotag].

A former four-star prospect from White Castle, Louisiana, Gilbert played his high school ball at University Lab on LSU’s campus. He appeared in 12 games as a reserve his true freshman season before becoming a starter in 2022.

He began his junior season as a starter in 2023, but he lost his job following a loss to Miami in Week 2, and he would not see the field again. After taking a redshirt year, he will have two remaining years of eligibility with the Tigers.

Gilbert had 79 total tackles, two interceptions and eight passes defended in his three years in College Station.

LSU defensive tackle Fitzgerald West enters the transfer portal

Fitzgerald West played on both sides of the ball in his two years at LSU.

LSU’s defensive line depth took a hit as defensive tackle [autotag]Fitzgerald West[/autotag] announced that he would be entering the transfer portal.

A former three-star recruit from Lafayette Christian Academy who played on both sides of the ball in high school, West saw action on both offense and defense as well as special teams while appearing in five games during his true freshman season.

After taking a redshirt year, he moved to focus solely on the defensive line this season, but the result was a decrease in playing time. He appeared in just two games, blowout wins over Grambling and Army, earning a tackle in each contest.

West’s departure only raises further questions about depth along the defensive line, which could be set to lose [autotag]Maason Smith[/autotag] and [autotag]Mekhi Wingo[/autotag] after this season.

LSU offers former Central Michigan safety in transfer portal

LSU could use help in the secondary in the worst way.

LSU has extended a scholarship to a fifth-year junior safety from Central Michigan in the transfer portal.

[autotag]Trey Jones[/autotag] is a 6-foot-2, 215-pound safety who is from Wetumpka, Alabama, where he played for Wetumpka High School. He committed to Central Michigan out of high school and has played in 44 games over five years as a Chippewa.

He has made 188 tackles, three interceptions, 9.5 tackles for loss, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery at Central Michigan. His past two seasons have been his best years as he racked up 85 tackles last year and 66 tackles this year.

LSU could use help in the secondary in the worst way. The Tigers ran into a huge issue with injuries to defensive backs this year and the Tigers depleted secondary has been torched in a few games. [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] is looking for reinforcements in the transfer portal and Jones is a guy with a plethora of experience that could work well at LSU.
