Drew Doyle’s 68 leads LSU as Tigers finish 8th in NCAA Regional

Doyle finished in the top 10 individually for the second year in a row.

BATON ROUGE – Drew Doyle posted his third under-par round on Wednesday, leading the Tigers with a 4-under 68 as LSU wrapped up play at the NCAA Norman Regional at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.

Doyle’s closing round of 68 allowed him to tie for seventh place overall in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 8-under 208 (71-69-68). Doyle had 14 birdies, four bogeys and one double-bogey over the three days. It also marked the second straight year Doyle has posted a Top 10 finish at the NCAA Regional. Last year, he tied for fifth at the NCAA Stockton Regional with another 8-under score.

In nine career NCAA Regional rounds, Doyle has been under par six times and even-par once.

As a team, LSU put together another strong round of 5-under 283 to finish in eighth place in the 14-team field. LSU finished at 9-under 855 for the 54-hole event.

Alabama won the NCAA Norman Regional team title at 28-under. They were followed by Oklahoma (-25), Colorado (-23), Texas Tech (-22) and Duke (-21). The top five teams advanced to the NCAA Championships later this month.

Individually, Texas Tech’s Ludvig Aberg claimed medalist honors at 14-under.

LSU once again blistered the front nine on Wednesday, playing the first nine holes to 7-under par. Garrett Barber and Connor Gaunt each had three birdies on the front side and were 3-under at the turn. Barber and Gaunt both finished the round at 1-under 71 after giving back two strokes on the back nine. Barber finished the tournament at even-par 216 (74-71-71).

Doyle followed his 1-under 35 on the front nine with three birdies over the final nine holes to get to 4-under. On the backside, Doyle birdie No. 10, 13, and 17 to finish with a bogey-free round.

Cohen Trolio shot a 1-over 73 to account for LSU’s fourth and final score. Trolio tied for 23rd overall at 3-under 213 (73-67-73). Luke Haskew, playing in the No. 5 spot for the Tigers, shot a 78.

Cohen Trolio’s 67 leads LSU men’s golf in Day 2 at NCAA Regional

The Tigers need to finish in the top five and currently sit six strokes outside of that group.

BATON ROUGE – Led by Cohen Trolio’s 5-under 67, the LSU men’s golf team put together the best team score of the day here Tuesday during the second round of the NCAA Norman Regional at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.

LSU’s 8-under round of 280 kept the Tigers within contention of advancing to the NCAA Championships later this month. The top five teams at the six NCAA Regionals move on to the NCAA Championships. LSU sits in seventh place, just six strokes out of the fifth and final qualifying spot after 36 holes.

LSU’s 280 tied Alabama and Ole Miss for the top rounds on Tuesday. The Crimson Tide lead the 14-team event at 15-under, followed by Oklahoma at 13-under, Texas Tech and Colorado at 11-under and North Florida at 10-under.

Duke stands at 8-under followed by LSU (-4), Ole Miss (-3) and Wake Forest (-1).

The Tigers blistered the front nine on Tuesday, combining for 12 birdies on the opening nine holes. The Tigers made the turn at 6-under as a team.

Trolio paced the group on the front side with birdies on three straight holes (Nos. 3-5) and then another birdie on No. 7 to get to 4-under. He added birdies on No. 10 and No. 16 to finish at 5-under 67, the lowest round of his collegiate career. He sits in a tie for seventh place in the individual standings at 4-under (73-67—140).

Drew Doyle followed his opening round of 1-under 71 with another strong 18 holes, posting a 3-under 69. Doyle made the turn at even par and then birdied three of the first five holes on the back nine to get to 3-under. After a bogey on No. 15, Doyle birdied No. 17 to finish at 3-under. Doyle is also in a tie for seventh place in the individual standing heading into the final round on Wednesday.

The Tigers had a third under-par round on Tuesday as Garrett Barber fired a 1-under 71. LSU’s final counting score came from Luke Haskew, who posted a 1-over 73. Nicholas Arcement shot a 2-over 74.

LSU tees off starting at 8:55 a.m. on the front nine Wednesday and will be paired with Ole Miss and Wake Forest for the final 18 holes.

LSU men’s golf team headed to NCAA Regional at Oklahoma

The three-day event runs from May 15-17.

BATON ROUGE – LSU’s men’s golf team is once again on its way to an NCAA Regional as the Tigers have been selected to play in the regional hosted by Oklahoma, the NCAA announced on Wednesday.

The three-day, 54-hole event will be played at the Jimmy Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Oklahoma and runs May 15-17. The teams will play 18 holes each day at The Jimmy Austin OU Golf Club, which will play to a par 72 and 7,452 yards. LSU will be making its first appearance at the Jimmy Austin OU Golf Club.

The top five teams in each of the six regional sites advance to the NCAA Championships, which take place May 26-31 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. Thirty teams advance to the NCAA Championships with the top eight following stroke play advancing to match play to determine the national champion.

LSU is appearing in an NCAA Regional for the 15th straight year, all under head coach Chuck Winstead. The Tigers have made every NCAA Regional since 2008. LSU won the 2015 national title a season after reaching the semifinals in match play. LSU also has Top 10 finishes in 2016 (5th) and 2017 (9th) since the match play format began in 2008.

LSU is the seventh seed in the Oklahoma Regional and is joined at the 14-team field by SEC foes Alabama and Ole Miss along with Louisiana-Lafayette. Texas Tech is the top seed, followed by Oklahoma, Alabama, Ole Miss and Wake Forest.

Other teams in the field include Duke, North Florida, Colorado, Kansas, North Carolina-Wilmington, Princeton and Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

The Tigers have been led by junior Drew Doyle and graduate Garrett Barber for most of the year. Doyle has five Top 10 finishes this season, including three in the Top 5. He brings a team-best 71.27 stroke average into the NCAA Regional. In 33 rounds this year, Doyle has been at even-par or better 19 times.

Last year, Doyle tied for fifth at 8-under at the NCAA Stockton, California Regional. Doyle with had rounds of 73-65-70 a year ago to the lead Tigers.

Barber is second on the team in scoring average at 71.33 and has a pair of Top 10 finishes, including one in the Top 5. Barber will be appearing in an NCAA Regional for the fourth time of his career.

Other top scorers for the Tigers include freshman Luke Haskew at 72.28, junior Nicholas Arcement at 72.76, senior Connor Gaunt at 73.48 and sophomore Cohen Trolio at 73.74. Arcement, Gaunt and Trolio all bring previous NCAA experience into post-season play for the Tigers.

BATON ROUGE – Drew Doyle and Connor Gaunt each fired rounds of 1-under 69 to lead LSU during the opening round of the SEC Men’s Golf Championships in St. Simons, Georgia.

Played on the Seaside Course at the Sea Island Golf Club, the Tigers opened the day with a 2-over team score of 282. LSU stands in 12th place after the first round, but the Tigers are only six strokes out of sixth place.

The top eight teams following 54-holes of stroke play advance to match play beginning Saturday. The tournament continues with 18 holes on Thursday followed by the final round of stroke play on Friday.

Texas A&M leads after the first round at 11-under, followed by Alabama (-10), Auburn (-9) and Mississippi State and Ole Miss each at 5-under.

Other counting scores for LSU during the opening round include Garrett Barber at even-par 70, while Cohen Trolio and Luke Haskew both carded 4-over rounds of 74.

Starting on the back nine, Barber led the Tigers with four birdies and got to 2-under following a birdie on No. 17. Barber closed with a 2-over 37 on the front nine to cap his day at even par.

Doyle, who leads the Tigers with five Top 10 finishes this year, had back-to-back birdies on holes No. 7 and 8 before settling for a bogey on this final hole to finish at 1-under. Doyle’s opening round included three birdies.

Since making his SEC Championships debut in 2021, Doyle has shot even-par or better rounds five times in seven rounds.

Gaunt posted 15 pars during his round, which tied for the most among all competitors, and added a pair of birdies – one on each side – and a bogey to end the day at 1-under. Doyle and Gaunt are both tied for 23rd overall heading into the second round on Thursday.

Tennessee’s Caleb Surratt and Alabama’s Thomas Ponder lead the individual tournament at 6-under 64.

LSU will go off the back nine again on Thursday as the Tigers are paired with Georgia and Missouri for the second round. Haskew will get LSU started in round two at 8:20 a.m. tomorrow, followed by Trolio at 8:30, Barber at 8:40, Gaunt at 8:50 and Doyle at 9.

LSU golf’s Drew Doyle ties for 2nd, Tigers finish 4th at Louisiana Classics

BATON ROUGE – Drew Doyle recorded his best finish of the season on Tuesday, tying for second place with a 54-hole score of 3-over par 216 as LSU concluded play at the Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette.

Doyle earned all-tournament honors for his performance as he posted a Top 5 showing for the third time in seven events this year. It was the highest collegiate finish for Doyle since claiming medalist honors at The Hayt last March at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

As a team, LSU finished the two-day event in fourth place at 38-over 890 (295-296-299). Texas A&M won the team title at 14-over, followed by Little Rock at 25-over and Sam Houston at 29-over. Host Louisiana-Lafayette rounded out the top 5 at 42-over.

Doyle birdied two of his final three holes to tie for second. His even-par final round of 71 included three birdies with the other coming on the par 4 11th hole. Doyle opened the tournament with rounds of 73 and 72 on the first day.

Doyle was one of only 10 golfers in the 84-player field to shoot even-par or better on Tuesday.

LSU got another Top 10 finish from Cohen Trolio, who posted a 2-over round of 73 on Tuesday. Trolio wrapped up the tournament at 7-over 220 (72-75-73) to tie for ninth place overall.

Other final round scores for the Tigers included Luke Haskew at 6-over 77, Connor Gaunt at 7-over 78 and Nicholas Arcement at 10-over 81. Gaunt tied for 35th overall with a three-round total of 228, followed by Arcement and Haskew in a tie for 43rd at 230.

Individually, Michael Sanders tied for 25th with a third-round score of 81 to finish at 225. He was joined by Leo Johansson, who tied for 52nd at 231, and Chris Woollam in a tie for 63rd at 233.

Woollam had the second-best round of the day on Tuesday for any Tiger with a 1-over 72. Woollam’s round included five birdies, four coming on the front nine.

Little Rock’s Anton Albers claimed medalist honors at 2-under 212 as he closed the tournament with one of only two under par rounds on Tuesday. Doyle tied for second with Kyle Bennett of New Orleans.
