Josh Williams is confident he will return for SEC Championship

The Tigers may get one of their best offensive players back for the Georgia game.

It’s no secret that LSU has been playing without one of its best players the past few weeks as the Tigers have missed [autotag]Josh Williams[/autotag] after he suffered an injury in LSU’s win over the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Since then, [autotag]Noah Cain[/autotag] and [autotag]John Emery Jr.[/autotag] have had to pick up the slack. They have done a great job so far, but [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] would love nothing more than to get Williams back.

The Tigers are headed to Atlanta to play the Georgia Bulldogs for the SEC Championship game this weekend and it would be a massive boost if Williams were to play this week.

Williams told the media this week that he expects to make his return to the field in the SEC title game.

“I talked to the training staff. They basically said it’s based on how I feel, how I want to go forward with it,” Williams said. “I’m feeling better than I did last week, I’ve been progressing every day. I started running last week. I’ve been doing well starting today even, I’m excited to see how well I progress. I’m pretty confident that I’m going to make an appearance in the game. I just want to put it in God’s hands and see how it goes.”

Getting Williams back would be huge for the Tigers’ confidence this weekend.

Injured LSU DT Maason Smith expected to be ready for spring practice

Recovery is going well for one of LSU’s top defenders.

LSU’s defense took a massive hit when [autotag]Maason Smith[/autotag] tore his ACL in the opener on the first drive of the season.

The sophomore defensive lineman was expected to have a breakout year and be one of the top defenders in the SEC, if not the entire country. Smith underwent surgery shortly after the injury. On Sunday, [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] offered an update on Smith’s timeline.

It sounds like Smith will be back in time for spring practice or sooner, as he has had no further setbacks, per Kelly.

Smith has a rare combination of size and athleticism. If he’s as good as his talent suggests or plays to the level coaches expected he would, then he’s the type of guy you can build an entire defense around.

LSU’s front has been adequate in Smith’s absence, thanks in large part to the emergence of [autotag]Mekhi Wingo[/autotag].

Wingo, like Smith, is just a sophomore. LSU should have both back next year. If Smith is the player he was prior to the injury, LSU’s interior is as good as anyone’s.

DTs [autotag]Jaquelin Roy[/autotag] and [autotag]Jacobian Guillory[/autotag] are both draft eligible. Neither is a likely first-round pick at the moment, and there’s a chance LSU could get them back, too.

Jayden Daniels wore a walking boot Monday, Brian Kelly optimistic he will practice Tuesday

The Tigers QB is a bit banged up but should be good to go this week.

As LSU prepares for the SEC Championship against Georgia on Saturday, the team will be closely monitoring the injury situation regarding quarterback [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag].

Daniels briefly exited the Texas A&M game on Saturday with what appeared to be an ankle injury, though he would later return and finish out the game. At his press conference on Monday, coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said that Daniels was in a walking boot but did not have a high ankle sprain.

The team is hopeful that Daniels will be able to practice on Tuesday as the team needs to be at full strength if it has any hope of upsetting the Bulldogs.

Kelly also updated the status of running back [autotag]Josh Williams[/autotag], who suited up against Texas A&M but didn’t see any game action. Williams is expected to contribute against the Bulldogs on Saturday.

LSU receiver Brian Thomas Jr. cleared to play vs. UAB

Thomas has been cleared after entering concussion protocol last week.

LSU was without one of its top receivers in its 13-10, SEC West-clinching win on the road against Arkansas last week. [autotag]Brian Thomas Jr.[/autotag] was held out as he entered concussion protocol prior to the game.

Coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] offered an encouraging update on Thomas’ condition on Monday, and on Thursday, Kelly said the wideout was cleared to play after participating in practice both Wednesday and Thursday.

Thomas, a sophomore, has 20 catches for 280 yards and three touchdowns this season, and he has stepped up as a reliable No. 3 target behind [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] and [autotag]Kayshon Boutte[/autotag], especially in the wake of a season-ending injury to [autotag]Chris Hilton Jr.[/autotag]

Kelly also provided an update on [autotag]Sevyn Banks[/autotag], who hasn’t played since he was hospitalized after a hit to the neck on the opening kickoff against Auburn last month. Kelly said Banks saw a spinal specialist on Thursday and hopes to return to the field this season.

He said he should have a further update on Banks next week.

The Tigers have largely managed to stay healthy since losing defensive tackle [autotag]Maason Smith[/autotag] with a torn ACL on the first drive of the season. Getting a player like Thomas back ahead of a key stretch of games should help this team’s confidence.

Brian Kelly offers injury updates on John Emery Jr. and Brian Thomas Jr.

Kelly had encouraging news regarding both offensive playmakers.

When LSU took the field in Fayetteville against Arkansas, it was without [autotag]Brian Thomas Jr.[/autotag]

Brian Kelly offered an update on the sophomore receiver at his weekly Monday press conference. Thomas entered concussion protocol last week, but Kelly was hopeful that things are trending in the right direction.

Thomas has not been LSU’s go-to target, but among SEC receivers with at least 30 targets, he’s second in passer rating when targeted. He’s a valuable piece to an offense that has struggled to stretch the field.

Kelly added that running back [autotag]John Emery Jr.[/autotag], who left the Arkansas game, had just a bruise and should be good to go. Before the bruise, Emery had three carries for 40 yards.

Like Thomas at receiver, Emery has been part of a revolving door at running back after missing the first two games of the year.

He’s shown up in some big moments for LSU this year and thanks to his contributions in the receiving game, his 5.9 yards per touch lead the LSU running back room.

If LSU is taking care of business against UAB, LSU might try and limit the action for Thomas and Emery, but both being healthy is good news for an LSU offense hoping to lead the Tigers on a playoff run.

Brian Kelly gives an update on Sevyn Banks’ status

Kelly updated a positive, if vague, update on Banks’ status.

In LSU’s first true road game of the season, the Tigers traveled to the Plains of Auburn, Alabama, to take on Bryan Harsin, Tank Bigsby and the Auburn Tigers.

During the opening kickoff, a scary moment happened when LSU defensive back [autotag]Sevyn Banks[/autotag] suffered a head injury and had to be carted off the field on a stretcher. Banks, a transfer from Ohio State, was starting to come into his own on the defensive side of the ball as he was starting to pick up schemes and concepts a lot better and in a flash, everything changed.

Brian Kelly released the latest update on Banks when he met with the media on Friday before LSU’s win over Arkansas.

“That’s a week-to-week situation,” Kelly said. “He’s better. He’s been in conditioning but I can’t offer you anything other than he feels good. He’s got full mobility and flexion. But that is a determination being made based on MRIs. Which, he’s scheduled to get another one here. I don’t know if it’s Tuesday or the following Tuesday. But, he’s made similar progress that Major Burns has made.”

I know he isn’t back on the field yet, but it is always great to get positive updates on any injured players.

Major Burns expected to play vs. Alabama, injury updates for Garrett Dellinger and Jack Bech

Burns has been cleared for practice and is expected to play Saturday. Meanwhile, Brian Kelly offered positive updates on Dellinger and Bech.

LSU has been a bit banged up in recent weeks despite its emergence over a two-game winning streak. The team is starting to get healthier just in time for the biggest game of the season against the Alabama Crimson Tide in a contest between the leaders in the SEC West.

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] offered a few positive updates when he took the podium on Monday ahead of game week. The most notable news regarded safety [autotag]Major Burns[/autotag], who has been sidelined since sustaining a neck injury against Mississippi State on Sept. 17.

“Major Burns is cleared to participate, so he’ll be out at practice today,” Kelly said. “He, as you can imagine, will be in our game plan and we expect him to play and be an important part of what we do.”

[autotag]Joe Foucha[/autotag] has seen starting reps at safety since Burns left the lineup. Foucha missed the beginning of the season due to academic suspension, but he’s started to come into his own. Both Burns and Foucha can be expected to play a role in the rotation.

LSU will also hope to get one of its starters on the offensive line back this week in [autotag]Garrett Dellinger[/autotag], who hasn’t played since suffering an MCL sprain against Tennessee. Kelly was less committal on Dellinger’s availability, but he did say the sophomore guard was making good progress.

“Garrett Dellinger is day to day,” Kelly said. “He had a good weekend. He was here this weekend. As you can imagine, that’s a little bit different because he’s got to be able to take a load on that knee. When you’re coming back from a knee injury, it’s easier to, obviously, not have to worry about running and cutting. But you’ve got to be able to take the load, and that’s what we’re working on right now.

“We think we’re going to get him there, but it’s still a process because now, we’re going to add practice onto it. We’ve got to see how he responds each day after practice. We had people leaning on him individually over the weekend. Now, we’re going to be leaning on him for a full practice, and we’ll see how it goes. But he’s making good progress.”

Finally, LSU fans are awaiting news on a pair of skill-position players who missed the game against Ole Miss in [autotag]Jack Bech[/autotag] and [autotag]John Emery Jr.[/autotag] Bech suffered a lower back injury against Florida, while Emery missed with an Achilles injury.

Kelly didn’t have an update on Emery, but he did say that Bech will practice this week.

“I’m certain Jack will practice. … I did get a report before I got in here on Jack,” Kelly said. “He is much improved and he was cleared to get out on the practice field today.”

Even in what looks to be a slightly down year for Alabama, this is one of the most talented rosters in college football. LSU will need to be as close to full strength as possible if it hopes to pull off the upset and put itself on the inside track in the division race.
