It’s been a busy week for the LSU Tigers on the recruiting trail. LSU added cornerback Marcus Scott last week while also losing two commits.

Early Sunday morning, LSU picked up another big addition for 2022 when four-star defensive back Laterrance Welch announced his commitment to the Tigers on Twitter.

A 6-foot-1, 180-pound cornerback from Acadiana High in Lafayette, Louisiana, Welch committed to the Tigers not long after he received an offer on Jan. 11.

Welch indicated he had a strong relationship with cornerbacks coach Corey Raymond when he spoke with Billy Embody of 247Sports after receiving his LSU offer.

“I talk to Corey Raymond, the cornerbacks coach, and Anthony Clavo; he’s a player personnel assistant,” Welch said.

Welch helped lead Acadiana High to its second straight Louisiana 5A state championship in 2020.

Welch is ranked as the No. 156 overall player in 2022, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. He is the No. 18 cornerback nationally and the No. 9 player in Louisiana.

After Welch’s commitment, LSU moves back up to No. 3 in 247Sports team rankings for the class of 2022.

The LSU Tigers just signed a top-five recruiting class for 2021 despite finishing just 5-5 on the season.

After inking most of its class in the early signing period, LSU head coach Ed Orgeron made several coaching staff, most notably at offensive and defensive coordinator.

While the Tigers have yet to name new coordinators, they are still rolling on the recruiting trail.

LSU currently has the No. 2 class for 2022, with seven recruits already on board, and appear in great shape with several of its top targets.

One such player is four-star defensive back Jacoby Mathews. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound safety from Ponchatoula High in Ponchatoula, Louisiana, hasn’t named any favorites in his recruitment just yet but is high on three schools, including the in-state Tigers.

“LSU, Mississippi State and Oklahoma,” Mathews told 247Sports via Andrew Ivins.

“Those three are showing me that they want me. They show me that I’m the top priority, but my recruitment is still open.”

LSU’s impending hire at defensive coordinator could play a role in Mathews’ decision. Still, one would expect the Tigers to remain the favorite in his recruitment due to their success at getting the state’s top players.

Mathews currently has no timeframe for a decision.
