Why Georgia Tech Will Win

All of a sudden, Georgia Tech rose up and showed just how good it is and could be with a dominant performance against Florida State. It pushed Virginia and wasn’t bad against Duke on the road, and then everything kicked in with the 76-65 victory over the Noles.

It’s a terrific passing team that keeps everything moving on one end, and forces a whole lot of mistakes on the other – both of those things overcame a relatively mediocre shooting day. The team doesn’t make a slew of mistakes, and Louisville doesn’t force them. The Cards don’t have the type of offense to put this away quickly, but …

Why Louisville Will Win

Louisville owns the glass and should beat up the Yellow Jackets, especially on the defensive end. No, the team doesn’t hit a lot from the outside and doesn’t force a bunch of mistakes, but it makes up for it by forcing one-and-outs on the defending boards.

This isn’t a big offensive rebounding Georgia Tech team, and it’s not a great shooting team over the last few games. If the Cardinals can clamp down a bit and force the Yellow Jackets to hit fewer than 45% from the field, they’ll grab all the misses.

Georgia Tech is amazing at home and struggles on the road. Louisville is struggling lately, period.

The Cardinals have to get to the line and need to manufacture points, but the Yellow Jackets get hit with a ton of fouls and should come up with enough takeaways to survive a good battle on the road.

Why Louisville Will Win

QB Malik Cunningham should be good to go. Banged up against Pitt, he was questionable for this, but he was fine in practice and won’t have any limitations.

When he’s on, the Cardinal passing game is as dangerous as any in the ACC at pushing the ball down the field, averaging a whopping 14 yards per completion against a Georgia Tech defense that twas lit up by UCF and Syracuse in losses.

Turnover have been the biggest issue for the Yellow Jackets, giving it up five times in each of the last two games. Make the Georgia Tech offense press – especially through the air – and the mistakes will come.

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

Louisville has two key problems that fall into Georgia Tech’s game plan. The offensive line isn’t doing enough to keep defense out of the backfield – the Yellow Jackets have done a great job of getting behind the line over the first three weeks.

The Cardinals are also having huge issues with the punting game, averaging fewer than 40 yards per kick. Field position is a huge deal for a Yellow Jacket offense that doesn’t go on a whole slew of long marches.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s all about the explosion. Louisville doesn’t move the chains, and it doesn’t do much of anything on third downs. It has to keep pressing the passing game deep, and it has to keep taking chances.

Georgia Tech will run well enough to keep this close, but the Cardinals and Cunningham will come up with a second half burst to survive.

Why Louisville Will Win

Georgia Tech just can’t seem to get this thing going. It’s good enough to battle in plenty of good fights – like the 68-64 loss to the Cardinals a few weeks ago – but it has lost five of its last eight games.

Louisville was able to get by on takeaways – it was a +7 in turnover margin. Georgia Tech is among the worst teams in the country when it comes to mistakes, turning it over 16 times per game. The Cardinals don’t force a lot of turnovers, but any little bit helps.

This isn’t a high-powered Yellow Jacket team – it doesn’t do anything from three. Low-scoring, no outside shooting, too many turnovers, bad from the free throw line – it’s all a bad combination against this Cardinal team that’s way too good from three and way too strong on the boards.

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

Louisville might do a great job from three, but Georgia Tech is one of the better teams in the ACC at defending on the perimeter.

It’s a good shooting team from inside the arc, with a good enough inside presence to pound for points on one end, and enough blocked shots to be okay on the other.

The rebounding is good enough to hold up, so as long as this doesn’t get into any sort of an up-and-down shootout, at home, the Yellow Jackets can hang.

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia Tech should be a wee bit pluckier than it might seem.

Louisville will win – the Yellow Jackets just don’t do enough from the outside – but watch for this to slow down just enough to keep this from getting too ugly until late.
