It’s hard to beat a James-led team 9 straight times, and that’s what the Nuggets will be trying to do Saturday.

You could say that the Nuggets have the Lakers’ number; however, L.A. was a 1-point favorite in the March 2 meeting and led by as many as 11 before falling flat once James hit 40,000 points.

Split up your bet and put no more than 1/3 on the Lakers to get the upset win in Game 1 on the road, just like they did at the Memphis Grizzlies in the 1st round last season.

Against the spread

L.A. is a veteran team that doesn’t get overwhelmed playing in hostile environments. It understands the importance of stealing the 1st road game in a series and went 3-0 ATS in its Game 1s last season, each time as an underdog.

The Nuggets are having their ring ceremony tonight, and if you’ve watched enough sports, you know that teams can come out flat after crowning moments. Denver is such a tough place to play, though, because of the altitude. They beat the Lakers by an average of 12 points in the 2 regular season games last year. There’s no chance we’re taking the Nuggets -225 here. I do like JAMAL MURRAY OVER 22.5 POINTS (-105). He averaged 32.5 in the 4-game sweep of the Lakers in the playoffs.

Against the spread

The Nuggets covered each game against the Lakers in the regular season at home. I would consider the Lakers if the spread were 7.5, but they’re not a great 3-point shooting team. They have a tendency to let things get away late in games in fouling situations.

Take the NUGGETS -5.5 (-105).

Over/Under

Both games in Denver during the regular season went Under, though this number is the lowest of them. It’s the season opener, and I don’t expect shooting to be sharp or the pace to be quick as the teams get their bearings under them.

The NUGGETS (+140) are the smart play here as they are home facing a Los Angeles Lakers’ team that looks tired. Despite seven straight wins, the Lakers have now been down by 20 or more points in the first half in two straight games.

They’ve played three overtime games in their last four contests and haven’t been able to pull away from lesser teams. Look for their winning streak to end on Sunday night against a good Nuggets team, who has won eight of their last 12 games.

Against the spread (ATS)

If the money line is too aggressive of a bet for you, consider betting on the Nuggets to cover the 3.5 point spread. Los Angeles has been awful against the spread as of late, covering in just three of their last 10 games.
