Week 1 of the 2021 NFL season is here and the Los Angeles Chargers begin on the road against the defending NFC East champion Washington Football Team. Their game kicks off Sunday at 1 p.m. ET at FedExField. Below, we look at the Chargers vs. Washington odds and lines; check back for our NFL picks and predictions.
The Chargers were 7-9 last season with some tough losses but are hopeful about the present and future because of the play of QB Justin Herbert as a rookie. He passed for 4,336 yards and 31 touchdowns en route to winning the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
Washington won the NFC East despite a 7-9 regular-season record in Ron Rivera’s first season as head coach. It has a new starting quarterback in veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick and still has a physical defense.

Chargers at Washington head-to-head
As it is an interconference matchup, the two teams only see each other once every four seasons. Washington leads the all-time series 7-4 but the Chargers won four of the last five matchups, dating back to 2001. The Chargers won 30-13 in their last game against one another in 2017.
Washington had the third-worst total offense in the league and averaged only 20.9 points per game in 2020. However, it ranked No. 2 in total defense and only three teams allowed fewer than the 20.6 points per game it allowed.
The Chargers were ninth in total offense and averaged 24.0 points per game. They also have the 10th-best total defense in the league, although they were 22nd in scoring defense, giving up 26.6 points per game.
