Los Angeles Chargers Super Bowl odds: Justin Herbert not enough to spark Bolts

Assessing the midseason Super Bowl futures odds for the Los Angeles Chargers, with a look at their odds to win the AFC West.

The Los Angeles Chargers (2-5) hit the halfway point of the 2020 NFL season mired in fourth place in the AFC West. Rookie QB Justin Herbert has lived up to his billing as the sixth overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, but he has been a lone bright spot.

Below, we analyze the midseason 2020 Los Angeles Chargers Super Bowl odds, along with their odds of winning the AFC West as well as NFL futures and opine on whether they’re worth a Super Bowl futures bet at this time.

The Chargers are +50000 to win Super Bowl LV. Those odds are worse than all but four teams through eight weeks. The Houston Texans (1-6) share the odds with the Bolts, with the Cincinnati Bengals (+100000), Jacksonville Jaguars (+200000), New York Giants (+250000) and New York Jets (+500000) priced as bigger long shots.

Despite the odds and the record, it hasn’t been all that bad for the Chargers. They’re 5-2 against the spread on the season, losing by an average of just 2.5 points per game. They’ve lost twice in overtime, lost by a single point to the Denver Broncos last week and dropped two other games by 7 or fewer points.

Herbert has completed 67.4% of his passes for 1,820 yards and 15 touchdowns against just 5 interceptions in six starts since replacing veteran QB Tyrod Taylor. RB Austin Ekeler has been out since Week 4 due to injury to put even more pressure on the rookie signal-caller.

The Chargers average 25.6 points per game but allow 26.4 PPG. They have a minus-3 turnover differential

Chargers division betting odds

  • Kansas City Chiefs -2500
  • Las Vegas Raiders +1000
  • Denver Broncos +6500
  • Los Angeles Chargers +15000

The Chargers are buried at the bottom of the AFC West after blowing a 14-3 halftime lead in their 31-30 road loss against the Broncos last week. They’re 0-2 against the division, having lost 23-20 to the Chiefs in overtime in Week 2 in Herbert’s debut. The Bolts will play the Raiders twice and the Chiefs and Broncos once more each in their final nine games.

Chargers futures picks and predictions

NO, the Chargers are not worth an NFL futures bet for either the Super Bowl or division title. While they’ve lost close games and are better than their record indicates, the hole is just too big with the Chiefs sitting safely atop the AFC West.
