Lions try out 2 players, hold visit with DT Albert Huggins

Huggins was briefly with the Lions earlier this season

The Detroit Lions held official tryouts for two players on Monday, as well as a visit with DT Albert Huggins.

Detroit had PK Ramiz Ahmed and LB Gabe Sewell in for tryouts. It’s the second time in as many weeks Ahmed has auditioned for the Lions.

Huggins should sound familiar. He was on the Lions in early September after being claimed off waivers from the Houston Texans following the 53-man roster cutdowns. The Lions waived the 23-year-old Clemson product four days later. He was subsequently claimed by the Minnesota Vikings but cut last week.

Huggins has familiarity with the scheme as well. He played for Lions defensive coordinator Cory Undlin with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2019, his rookie season.

Lions kick off bye week by trying out 5 kickers

The Lions doing some due diligence on the kicking front

The Detroit Lions kicked off the bye week by auditioning five free agent kickers in Allen Park.

The parade of kickers trying out for the Lions was noted on the NFL’s transaction wire for Monday. There were also five other players on the list from Friday’s tryouts. The NFL does not publish the Friday lists until Monday.

Among the kickers:

  • Ramiz Ahmed
  • Chris Blewitt
  • Andrew Franks
  • Austin MacGinnis
  • Taylor Russolino

Only Franks has ever appeared in an NFL game. He was the Miami Dolphins placekicker in 2015-2016.

The Lions are not threatening incumbent kicker Matt Prater with the tryout. They are doing some due diligence to have players at the ready in case Prater gets injured or loses his mojo.
