Link Jarrett and Florida State Fall in College World Series Semi-Finals

Former Notre Dame coach falls just short of the finals

Former Notre Dame head baseball coach [autotag]Link Jarrett[/autotag] left the Fighting Irish following their Cinderella type run to Omaha for the College World Series in 2021.  He left to coach the school he previously starred at, Florida State, and took little time to wake the sleeping monster.

Jarrett helped guide the Seminoles their 24th all-time College World Series appearance this year, but on Wednesday were eliminated after losing to Tennessee for the second time this week.

Tennessee advances to the best-of-three national championship series where they’ll take on the winner of the Texas A&M vs. Florida matchup.  The Aggies need to win just one game while Florida has to win two-straight to get to the championship round.

One of the most underrated crazy sports stats remains as Florida State has now made 24 College World Series appearances all-time (third most) but have never brought home the national championship.

Link Jarrett discusses Florida State’s loss to Tennessee

Florida State baseball head coach Link Jarrett discusses the Seminoles’ loss to Tennessee.

No. 1 national seed Tennessee opened play in the College World Series on Friday. The Vols defeated No. 8 Florida State, 12-11, at Charles Schwab Field Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska.

Florida State (47-16) head coach Link Jarrett met with media and discussed the loss to the Vols (56-12).

“Heck of a game, heck of a college game,” Jarrett said. “I think I told you guys, I don’t know that the college sport can be played at a higher level than what we’re watching it occur right now, with the age of the guys, some of the transfer capabilities, the draft has shrunk. I think that was on display today, all day, and tonight, and the game was not played cleanly. We gave them opportunities throughout the course of the game. This wasn’t just the end of the game. They had chances. We were not as clean as we needed to be. They would probably tell you the same thing.

I thought our response to some early game dysfunction was really good, to put six on the board. We saw every type of arm you could see.”

Former Notre Dame Head Coach Going Back to College World Series

Good for Link!

It was just two years ago that Notre Dame was one of the very best teams in college baseball and upset top-overall seed Tennessee to clinch a spot in the College World Series.

Following the season, head coach [autotag]Link Jarrett[/autotag] left Notre Dame to return home to Florida State where he played college baseball and where he has family.

Just two years into his run at Florida State, Jarrett has the Seminoles heading back to the College World Series for the 24th time in program history.

After struggling to a 23-31 record in Jarrett’s first year, Florida State bounced back in a huge way this season, going 47-15 to date, including 2-0 against Connecticut in the Super Regionals to clinch a spot in Omaha.

North Carolina and Virginia have also already advanced to the College World Series while North Carolina State will play a winner-take-all game three at Georgia on Monday to decide another of the eight participants.

On this day: Notre Dame knocked off No. 1 to head to College World Series

It’s happened before, why not again?

Nobody in the college baseball world outside of the Michiana region seems to have a belief that Notre Dame has a realistic chance to knock of No. 1 Tennessee in the Super Regional this weekend and head to what would be the third trip to the College World Series in program history.

[lawrence-related id=57233]

Tennessee’s stats and record are well documented and I’m not here to tell you to write in stone that Notre Dame shocks the world but I will tell you to expect the next three days to be competitive in Knoxville.

Perhaps it’s fitting that with the Super Regional starting on Friday that it happens on what is the 20th anniversary of Notre Dame clinching their second and most recent trip to the College World Series.

And upsetting No. 1 on their home field.

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6eulGTLLCo&w=560&h=315]

Led by freshman Chris Niesel who allowed just one run in eight innings against No. 1 Florida State, the Irish beat the Seminoles 3-1, earning a trip to Omaha.

The 2022 version of Notre Dame is a fine baseball team that was robbed of hosting their own regional and given the double-whammy of having to play the undisputed tournament favorite in Super Regionals.

They’re a bunch of smart young men but might just be dumb enough to think they can walk into Knoxville and pull this thing of.

I know I certainly am.

Notre Dame baseball comes back to take 2-of-3 from Florida State

Ma, the meat loaf!

As the great Meatloaf once said, “two outta three ain’t bad”.

After falling 3-2 in Friday’s series opener against Florida State and former Irish head baseball coach [autotag]Link Jarrett[/autotag], Notre Dame rallied to win the last two days and take two-of-three from the Seminoles. Sunday’s affair was moved up because of lousy Midwest weather but Notre Dame’s bat quickly came alive.

Connor Putz and Vinny Martinez each launched solo home runs in the first two innings to put the Irish up 2-0 before a DeAmez Ross three-run shot in the third inning gave Florida State a 4-2 advantage. That wouldn’t last long however as Notre Dame answered with a three-run blast from Brooks Koetzee in the fourth inning but the Seminoles were able to quickly tie things back up at five a half inning later.

Putz then sent a second home run over the wall in the sixth to put the Irish ahead 7-5 and they wouldn’t look back. They would single their way to five more runs and take a 12-5 lead before holding on for a 12-7 victory.

Carter Bosch had a tough afternoon for Notre Dame as he allowed four runs in 2.1 innings. Caden Spivey was strong in 4.1 innings of relief allowing just two runs and earning the win. Jamie Arnold was hit with the loss for Florida State as he allowed five runs in just 1.1 innings as the first man out of the pen.

Notre Dame moves to 25-17 overall in 2023 and 13-11 in the ACC after taking two-of-three. Florida State falls to 15-27 overall and just 6-18 in conference play.

Next up for the Irish wil be a midweek against Bowling Green on Tuesday before hosting North Carolina State next weekend.

Notre Dame baseball evens series with Florida State

Go win a series now on Sunday!

Notre Dame baseball has welcomed back former head coach Link Jarrett and Florida State for a three-game series this weekend.  The Irish evened the series at a game a piece with a win on Saturday.  Below are the details from that contest courtesy of the Notre Dame athletic department.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Notre Dame Fighting Irish defeated Florida State in a dominant fashion as they downed the Seminoles 12-2 on Saturday, April 29 at Frank Eck to make it an even 1-1 in the three-game series. Notre Dame advances to 24-17 on the year and 12-11 in the ACC as the Irish head into the final matchup tomorrow.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Blake Hely (3-1) started on the mound as he took home his third win of the season, pitching 7.0 innings and recording eight strikeouts. He was relieved by Will Mercer, throwing 2.0 innings, recording two strikeouts, and allowing no runs on two hits. The Irish were led today by Vinny Martinez, who finished the day going 3-4, recording one home run, two runs, and three RBI. He was followed by Jack Penney, who tallied two hits, two runs, and four RBI as he recorded his second grand slam of the year in the bottom of the eighth.

The Seminole offense struck first as they homered to left field in their very first at bat to take an early 1-0 lead. Florida State extended the lead in the fourth on another home run to make it a 2-0 ballgame before the Irish offense lit up in the bottom frame.

A six-run inning lifted the Irish to a 6-2 advantage as Carter Putz and Jack Penney got the party started with back-to-back base hits to put runners on first and second. Vinny Martinez sent it deep down the right field line for his eighth home run of the year as the three-run long ball gave the Irish the 3-2 advantage for their first lead of the game. The hitting streak continued as DM Jefferson and Brooks Coetzee recorded back-to-back doubles. Coetzee scored Jefferson to extend the lead with a score of 4-2.

An RBI single to right field from Danny Neri would score Coetzee for the fifth Irish run of the day. TJ Williams followed with a base hit and Zack Prajzner reached via a walk to make it bases loaded. Moreno would tack on the final run of the frame as he scored on a failed pick off attempt at second base from a throwing error by the pitcher.

The Irish led 6-2 throughout the next three innings as another monster frame was on the way. Notre Dame recorded another six runs in the bottom of the eighth to extend the lead 12-2 and take home the win.

A Penney grand slam to right field scored Moreno, Williams, and Putz to make it a 10-2 ballgame. Coetzee recorded his second double of the day as he sent it down the left line, sending home Martinez and  Brady Gumpf for the final Irish runs of the day.

WATCH: Notre Dame Baseball coach Shawn Stiffler mic’d up at practice

The team looks relaxed and ready

The [autotag]Notre Dame Baseball[/autotag] team is a month away from first pitch, but it seems like first-year head coach [autotag]Shawn Stiffler[/autotag] is already in mid-season form. The initial season from the new Irish coach should be very telling as to where the program is headed.

The team under [autotag]Link Jarrett[/autotag] went 86-32 during two full seasons and the shortened COVID-19 2020 campaign. One can argue that was the greatest stretch ever for Notre Dame Baseball, even though it was short-lived.

When Jarrett opted to return to his alma mater, [autotag]Florida State[/autotag], he left a massive hole that Stiffler is expected to fill. The new Irish coach seems like a very likable leader and his record at [autotag]VCU[/autotag] was very impressive at 352-207.

If the Irish play as loose as they seem in this video of Stiffler mic’d up, then it should bode very well for the first season with him as the head coach.

College baseball opening day: Get to know 2023 Notre Dame squad

Happy opening day! Go Irish!

The last time we saw Notre Dame baseball they were among the nation’s final eight remaining teams as they made just their third trip ever to the College World Series in Omaha.  Although the Irish fell short of winning the national championship, they had a season that won’t soon be forgotten.

Since last summer we saw head coach [autotag]Link Jarrett[/autotag] take the job at the school he was an All-American at, Florida State.  Replacing him is [autotag]Shawn Stiffler[/autotag] who leads the Irish for the first time this weekend as they take on Lipscomb in Nashville.

Notre Dame announced their starting pitchers for the weekend series earlier in the week.  Get set for Fighting Irish baseball by getting to know a bit about the stars of the squad below as they get going with the 2023 season.

Notre Dame’s baseball season begins tomorrow, starting rotation is set

The season begins tomorrow

A new era of [autotag]Notre Dame baseball[/autotag] is upon us. Gone is [autotag]Link Jarrett[/autotag], who set the bar extremely high for new head coach [autotag]Shawn Stiffler[/autotag].

The Irish will get their season started by traveling to Nashville, Tennessee to take on the Lipscomb Bison’s. The three game series will begin on Friday afternoon, with rightly [autotag]Blake Hely[/autotag] getting the start. It will be his first one in an Irish uniform as he transferred in from Davidson.

[autotag]Radek Birkholz[/autotag] will then follow him on Saturday, with [autotag]Jackson Dennies[/autotag] getting the Sunday start. It’s a trio of righties to start the games that the Irish will send to the bump throughout the weekend.

All three games will be broadcasted on ESPN+ as the Irish hope to get off to a fast start in 2023.

Watch: New Notre Dame Baseball coach Stiffler introduced

Welcome coach!

The Irish are coming off a stretch over the last three seasons where they were one of the best teams in the country. [autotag]Link Jarrett[/autotag] did what many didn’t think was possible, making a Midwest baseball team into a perennial contender. Unfortunately for Notre Dame, the timing of Jarrett’s alma mater having an opening and his success with the Irish saw him leave to return home and take over the Florida State opening.

The Irish needed to find his replacement, which they did in [autotag]Shawn Stiffler[/autotag], who for the past 15-years was at the helm of the VCU program. It was tough for him to leave, but taking over a program that is coming off a College World Series berth was too much to pass up. Take a look at Irish AD [autotag]Jack Swarbrick[/autotag] introduce the newest Notre Dame Baseball head coach.
