The first event of its kind, the SpeedTour All-Star Race at Lime Rock Park was a spectacular combination of motorsports’ biggest legends and the stars of the Trans Am Series by Pirelli behind the wheel of CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series race cars. The pairing of All-Star driver Andy Lally and 2023 TA2 Series champion Brent Crews took the top step of the podium in the two-part race that combined points based on finishing positions to crown the ultimate driving duo. A second-place performance by Lally in the All-Star portion of the race set the stage for Crews, who earned a hard-fought third-place finish against his Trans Am competitors. Together, the two tallied 35 points to win a $50,000 prize.

The All-Star drivers drove the first race stint, and Scott Speed in the No. 17 Team SLR-M1 Racecars Chevrolet Camaro took the green flag after winning the pole in Friday’s qualifying session. With Andy Lally’s No. 70 Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang starting beside him on the front row, Speed got a good, clean start, protecting the point position. Lally ran on Speed’s tail, followed by Adam Andretti in the No. 44 Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang. The double yellow first waved on lap seven for the No. 97 Mike Cope Racing Ford Mustang driven by Geoff Brabham, who was forced to retire due to a mechanical issue.

The lap 11 restart allowed for a shakeup in the running order, as Paul Menard passed Andretti, taking the third spot in his No. 3 F.A.S.T. Auto Racing Ford Mustang. Just in front of him, Lally had his sights set on Speed, but despite a late-race challenge, Speed was able to hold the lead until the first checkered flag waved at the 25m mark, ending the first half of the race. Menard finished third, followed by Andretti and Bobby Labonte in the No. 26 Mike Cope Racing Ford Mustang. Greg Biffle in the No. 27 Team SLR-M1 Racecars Ford Mustang was scored sixth, followed by Ryan Newman in the No. 90 Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang and Casey Mears behind him in the No. 38 Concierge Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro. Boris Said finished ninth in the No. 33 Concierge Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro, and Mike Skinner in the No. 892 Concierge Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro rounded out the top 10.

Following a competition break to change drivers, the race restarted for the second stint, with the Trans Am pros taking the wheel in the same positions their All-Star teammates finished in. This put young Tristan McKee in the lead in the No. 17 Team SLR-M1 Racecars Chevrolet Camaro, followed by Crews in his No. 70 Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang, Wlostowski in the No. 3 F.A.S.T. Auto Racing Ford Mustang, AJ Henriksen in the No. 44 Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang, and Thomas Merrill in the No. 26 Mike Cope Racing Ford Mustang.

The action began as soon as the green flag waved, with Crews overtaking McKee for the lead and Merrill jumping up to third after making contact with Wlostowski. Thomas Annunziata, who started seventh in the No. 90 Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang, also navigated all the way up to fourth, all before the conclusion of the first lap. Ben Maier in the No. 80 Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang was picking his way through the field, going from 11th to fifth in the first four laps. Connor Mosack in the No. 8 Team SLR-M1 Racecars Ford Mustang went on a tear, starting the second stint in 17th and cracking the top 10 on lap eight.

Crews held the lead until lap eight, when he was impressively challenged and overcome by Annunziata. Mosack continued his march to the front, taking over the fourth position on lap 19. Crews lost one more spot to Merrill on lap 20, while McKee struggled, dropping out of the top 10 and bringing the race to a yellow condition when his left-rear tire went flat. With the 25m clock ticking down, racing was unable to resume, and cars crossed the finish line in the order they were scored when the caution period began. Annunziata led Merrill, Crews, Mosack and Maier over the finish line.

When the points were tallied, it was the pairing of Lally and Crews who were scored first with a combined 35 points, while Labonte and Merrill took second with 33 points, and Newman and Annunziata rounded out the star-studded podium with 32 points. Following the race, Crews and Lally were awarded with a $50,000 check, gold Bell helmets and Omologato bespoke timepieces, in addition to custom trophies.

“This is a special moment,” said Lally. “I’ve had a handful of race wins at Lime Rock, but this is really cool. To share this track with some of my heroes and guys that I look up to and respect at the highest levels of the sport is amazing. And then, to also share it with tomorrow’s stars is incredible. This race is the brainchild of Tony Parella; there’s so much that he put on the line for this and risked. We got a really good show out of it. [Ryan Newman and Bobby Labonte], on both ends of our podium here, are guys that I’ve respected since I was really young, and they’ve accomplished so much. But then the guys that I’m standing right next to, both Thomases [Merrill and Annunziata] and Brent [Crews] here, are just monster future stars, and it’s really cool to be up here with them.”

“This feels incredible,” said Crews. “I just want to say thank you to all of the fans. Goodness, this is probably the biggest crowd I’ve seen, and I’ve been to a lot of racetracks. I’m really happy to have y’all here and to be able to race with these stars, both the people that I race every week, as well as guys like Ryan [Newman] and Bobby [Labonte]. This is just so cool. There’s so many guys that I remember watching on TV when I was five years old, and I got to race with them. I just want to thank everybody at Nitro Motorsports and Nick Tucker, who has done so much for me growing up, from racing go-karts to winning championships with this race car. Being able to share the top step with Andy [Lally] is great. You see how much stuff he gets to win, and being able to win with him feels really great. So, I’m happy to be here. The Nitro Motorsports No. 70 Franklin Road Apparel car was pretty [awesome], and I just want to say thank you to Toyota Racing. I’m happy to be here.”

The Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli next hits the track at Watkins Glen International for the Mission Foods Watkins Glen Speed Tour, August 21-25. Tickets can be purchased here on SpeedTour.net.

Legendary racers from all disciplines of motorsports converged at Lime Rock Park for the SpeedTour All-Star Race, where they’re paired with the stars of the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli in a CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series car. Scott Speed in the No. 17 Team SLR-M1 Racecars Chevrolet Camaro was the fastest in qualifying with a best time of 52.657s, claiming the pole for himself and his driving partner, Tristan McKee.

Starting beside him on the front row is Andy Lally in the No. 70 Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang, who laid down a lap time of 52.845s. Lally is paired with 2023 CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series champion Brent Crews. Their No. 70 car was the fastest in the weekend’s only practice session.

“These CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series cars are really fun,” said Speed. “A lot of our young drivers get to drive these as part of their development, so it’s fun to get in one and drive it at speed and get a feel for them. They’re great cars for these kids to develop in; it’s a great series. I’m happy to be able to come out here and race with Tristan — obviously super young, one of the new, hot up-and-comers. It’s cool to be able to get in the car and get a real experience of what they’re feeling.”

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1479]

“I’m excited,” said McKee. “Scott gets to do the first half and I get to do the last, so hopefully I’m in a good position and I can stay there. I feel pretty good about it. I feel comfortable in these cars and on this track, so I feel good.”

SpeedTour CEO Tony Parella offered his thoughts on the event thus far.

“I’m so grateful for all the All-Stars that came out,” said Parella. “When you consider this field, there’s over 8,000 NASCAR starts, almost 600 sports-car racing starts, 40-plus Formula 1 starts, IndyCar championships and everything in between gracing us with their presence. I think it’s like old home week for these guys. They’re having a family reunion, and, you know, these drivers look a little older. They’ve got a little more gray, maybe a couple more pounds, but when you look at the speeds, they’re still racers. To bring this platform to the young up-and-coming drivers that have aspirations to race on the biggest stages, this is a perfect conduit for that, so, for that, I’m grateful. We got blessed with good weather. I want the fans to have a ball. Heck, we had an autograph session that lasted over an hour. If we let it, the line would have gone two hours.”

The SpeedTour All-Star Race will be contested Saturday at 1:00 p.m. ET. It will be broadcast live on MAVTV and streamed live here beginning at 12:30 p.m. ET. The All-Stars will take the green flag for the race, then hand over their TA2 cars to the Trans Am pros following a mid-race competition break for a driver change.

Parella Motorsports Holdings and Lime Rock Park have confirmed four additional drivers who will join the SpeedTour All-Star Race, July 19-20. The weekend will feature 19 pairings of racing legends with today’s Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli stars, and will also celebrate the first IROC event in more than 20 years, as several original IROC competitors reunite with cars raced in the iconic series.

“We’re thrilled to add even more All Stars to our already impressive lineup for this year’s SpeedTour All-Star Race,” said Tony Parella, CEO of PMH. “If the only element to this event was the All Stars, that’d be impressive, but then we’re adding some of our best drivers in Trans Am’s CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series and TA class, and including the first IROC event in over 20 years. The fans in New England have been such great supporters of SpeedTour events; I can’t think of a better place to host the SpeedTour All-Star Race than at Lime Rock Park.”

Joining the SpeedTour All-Star Race will be Adam Andretti, Todd Bodine, Andy Lally and Casey Mears. The group represents some of the best-known names in racing, but also represents a myriad of accomplishments in their own right—including five championships and countless race wins, some of which were achieved in the most prestigious races in the world.

Andretti, Bodine, Lally and Mears complete a star-studded field that includes Daytona 500 and Indianapolis 500 champions, IROC winners and drivers who have stood atop the podium at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Nürburgring, and Daytona. In total, the All-Star drivers are responsible for 11 NASCAR championships, an IndyCar championship, 13 road racing championships, an IROC championship, three USAC championships and four Rallycross championships.

The SpeedTour All-Star race pairs each All-Star driver with one of the stars from Trans Am or TA2 Club in a spec CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series racecar for the 60-minute race. Drivers will not only be racing for a trophy, as a $50,000 winner-takes-all prize will also be on the line for the race-winning team. The reward has attracted some of the top talent from today’s entrants, with many of the drivers recognized as stars themselves, accounting for nearly 800 starts in Trans Am cars, 48 wins, 221 top fives, 398 top 10s and five championship titles. Expected driver pairings, include:

  • AJ Henriksen with Adam Andretti
  • Barry Boes with Greg Biffle
  • John Atwell with Todd Bodine
  • Tom Sheehan with Geoff Brabham
  • Ethan Barker with Ron Fellows
  • Alan Davison with Davey Hamilton
  • Jim Gallaugher with Ron Hornaday Jr.
  • Sam LeComte with Davy Jones
  • Thomas Merrill with Bobby Labonte
  • Brent Crews with Andy Lally
  • Amy Ruman with Pippa Mann
  • Edward Sevadjian with Casey Mears

  • Thomas Annunziata with Ryan Newman
  • Boris Said Jr. with Boris Said
  • Scott Lagasse Jr. with Ken Schrader

  • Tristan McKee with Scott Speed
  • Paul Ruth with Danny Sullivan

The SpeedTour All-Star Race weekend kicks off on Friday, July 19, with All-Star drivers taking to the track for a 30-minute practice session, followed by qualifying that afternoon. Fans will have a chance to meet their favorite drivers during the All-Star Autograph Session at 2 p.m. ET on Friday, or during the Pre-Race Fan Walk on Saturday, July 20 at 12 p.m. ET. The SpeedTour All-Star Race will go green at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday.

In addition to the SpeedTour All-Star race, the two-day event will include an IROC exhibition, as well as racing from Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA), Prototype Sprint Series Association presented by Hankook (PSSA) and Canada’s Nissan Sentra Cup.

The lineup of drivers and cars have been confirmed for the first IROC event in more than 20 years. Scheduled for July 19-20 at Lime Rock Park, IROC will enhance an already exciting SpeedTour All-Star Race weekend.

Featuring both an on-track racing exhibition and static display, the event will reunite original IROC competitors with cars raced in the legendary series. Mark Martin, a 96-time winner across NASCAR’s top-three series, 13-time IROC race winner and five-time IROC series champion, will be one of the drivers piloting the historic IROC cars at Lime Rock Park.

“I have always said that the crown jewel of my racing career is what I was able to achieve in IROC,” said Martin. “The event at Lime Rock Park is going to be an exciting opportunity to reminisce about those great times and to reunite with some of the best people in motorsports.”

Joining Martin as other former IROC competitors driving in the event will be Greg Biffle, Geoff Brabham (two-time IROC race winner), Davy Jones, Bobby Labonte (three-time IROC race winner and 2001 IROC series champion), Max Papis, Ken Schrader and Danny Sullivan (one IROC race win). In addition to this impressive list of former IROC drivers, the event will include four-time NASCAR Truck Series champion Ron Hornaday, Grand-Am Sports Car Series and Trans Am champion Boris Said and 1995 NASCAR Truck Series champion Mike Skinner.

An equally exciting component of the event at Lime Rock Park will be approximately 20 authentic IROC race cars spanning over 30 years of racing history. The oldest are a pair of 1974 Chevrolet Camaros — one driven to victory at Riverside International Raceway by Bobby Allison in 1975, and utilized again in 1976 by A.J. Foyt to clinch his second IROC championship; the other was raced by Foyt in 1975, as he finished second to Bobby Unser by just two feet, in what was the second-closest IROC finish in history.

The newest car is a 2005 Pontiac Firebird raced by four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves. In November 2005, Castroneves drove the car to a fourth-place finish at Atlanta Motor Speedway in his final IROC start.

The event will also reunite several of the original racers with their cars, as former IROC winners return. Fans will instantly recognize the lime green No. 14 Dodge Avenger, which won three times with three drivers from three different disciplines: F1’s Martin Brundle, NASCAR’s Dale Earnhardt Sr., and IndyCar’s Al Unser Jr. However, it will be the car’s final driver who will get to reunite with it at Lime Rock Park — Mark Martin.

Fans will also recognize the red 1984 Chevrolet Camaro, which is believed to be the most period-correct 1984-era IROC Camaro in existence. Owned by Richard Childress, this car was raced by Dale Earnhardt twice in the 1980s.

Of course, there will be cars that were driven by not only the best names in motorsport, but also those of Hollywood fame. The School Bus Yellow No. 15 1978 Chevrolet Camaro was driven to victory by both Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip, as the two NASCAR Hall of Famers were among 31 drivers who turned laps in the car. However, that count doesn’t include actors Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood, James Brolin and Gene Hackman, who enjoyed a private test day in the car at Sonoma Raceway in December 1977.

“We have received such an overwhelmingly positive response from fans since announcing our event at Lime Rock Park and I believe this impressive lineup of legendary drivers and historic IROC cars will just keep that momentum going,” said Ray Evernham, co-principal of IROC Holdings. “It will truly be a unique experience for fans to get up close and personal with cars that have been driven by racing royalty. From Fittipaldi to Earnhardt, Foyt to Martin. These cars are truly time capsules that represent racing on a worldly scale. Pair that with being able to shake the hands of some of the legends that drove them and you have a once-in-a-lifetime experience for race fans.”

“We’re thrilled to have IROC join us at the SpeedTour All-Star Race,” said Tony Parella, CEO of Parella Motorsports Holdings. “As a racing fan, there was nothing better than IROC—it brought together all the best drivers from all forms of motorsports. Personally, I’m really excited to witness this all coming together — with so many of the original cars and drivers — it’s going to be great.”

Menard wins at Lime Rock Park, becomes first repeat TA winner of 2024

Paul Menard’s day went from frustration to triumph at the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli Memorial Day Classic at Lime Rock Park, as he overcame pre-race technical issues to earn his second victory of the season. Menard nearly missed the grid because his car wouldn’t start on the pre-grid, but a recovery by his 3GT team allowed him to keep his fourth-place starting position. From there, raw speed and the troubles of others allowed him to take the lead early in the race and never look back, taking the checkered flag at the Lime Rock SpeedTour.

Tomy Drissi (No. 8 Franklin Road Apparel Chevrolet Camaro) started the race from the lead after earning his first pole position with his own team, Drissi Motorsports, in this morning’s qualifying session, just barely beating out three-time champion Chris Dyson (No. 16 GYM WEED Ford Mustang). When the green flag waved, Drissi smoothly pulled ahead of his competitors, while third-place starter Adam Andretti (No. 17 Top Liner/Go Share Chevrolet Camaro) made contact with Dyson in Turn 1, causing Dyson to spin and drop to last in class. Drissi held the lead for the first two laps, with Andretti challenging behind him, but by lap three, Andretti was able to make the pass and take control of the race.

Just one lap later, Drissi faded back to third, and Andretti put a wheel off the track, losing momentum and allowing Menard to take over the point position in his No. 3 Menards/Masterforce Tools Ford Mustang. Once Menard got out in front, he flawlessly ticked off the laps, opening a bigger and bigger lead over Andretti.

Meanwhile, Dyson was making blazing-fast laps to recover from his spin, and he worked his way up to fourth by lap seven. At a 15-second disadvantage behind the leaders, Dyson chipped away at the gap. On lap 23, he passed Drissi for the third position, and then put Andretti in his sights.

Menard continued to dominate out front, but Andretti fell farther behind the leader, while Dyson stalked the second-place driver. Dyson finally caught Andretti on lap 58 of 68, allowing just 10 laps for him to pursue Menard, who was still nearly 10 seconds ahead.

Although Dyson was able to cut down Menard’s advantage to six seconds, a stopped car on the track brought out the yellow flag with three laps to go, forcing the race to end under caution and preventing Dyson from making any more forward progress. Menard took the checkered flag, followed by Dyson, Andretti and Drissi. Amy Ruman, who had experienced damage early in the race in her No. 23 McNichols Co. Chevrolet Corvette, finished fifth.

“This is a great track; it’s a bucket list track for me,” said Menard. “I am just in awe of the fans here, the crowd. I’ve always heard the Lime Rock crowd was the best. There’s some great road courses in America that we get to go to because of the veterans and our military, who keep us safe. First and foremost, we get to do this and have fun, but we don’t do this without them. I got to meet a gentleman, Chris Ross over here, he’s a veteran Army Ranger. We spent some time together this weekend. There are guys like Chris all across America that live a different life, protecting us. Hats off to everyone at 3GT, they gave me a hell of a race car. On to Pittsburgh to try to do it again.”

Notes of Interest:

  • This was Paul Menard’s second visit to GYM WEED Winners Circle this year. He previously won in the season opener at Sebring International Raceway.
  • Tomy Drissi started from the pole for the first time with Drissi Motorsports, and for the first time since July 2021 at Road America.
  • Ricky Sanders took his first victory of the season in the XGT class.
SGT’s Jenn Krpata won her first-career Trans Am race today in just her second start. She is the second woman to win in the class in 2024. Kaylee Bryson won Round 3 at NOLA Motorsports Park.
  • Joey DaSilva’s GT win was the first of his Trans Am career. This was his fourth-career start.
  • This was a home-track victory for both Krpata (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and DaSilva (Westport, Mass.)
  • Krpata’s last visit to Lime Rock Park was as a spectator at four years old.

XGT

The XGT race was a battle between Ricky Sanders (No. 43 BridgeHaul/Bennett/PitBoxes.com Mercedes AMG GT3) and 2023 champion Danny Lowry (No. 42 Bennett/BridgeHaul/PitBoxes.com Mercedes AMG GT3). Sanders had a great start to the race, and in the opening laps, he pulled ahead to a gap that was insurmountable for Lowry without a caution. Sanders led from green flag to checkers, taking his first win of the 2024 season.

“That car is just awesome,” said Sanders. “After the first practice when we got in the car, I came in and I said, ‘this is the most awesome car I’ve ever driven.’ And I’ve got to thank Danny [Lowry] for that, because I was used to driving just regular old club-style cars, and Danny has allowed me to run these really nice FIA GT3 spec cars that are just like works of art to drive. I’m really enjoying that.

“We wanted to have a better race between the two of us, but I caught a couple of holes on that very first lap and we had such a gap that we never got back together. But maybe on the next one, we’ll be able to run door to door together and see how it comes out. It’s really awesome having the Wreaths Across America people here. Having them here this weekend is just a real honor and I’m glad to be part of that program too.”

SGT

In SGT, Jenn Krpata in the No. 93 Island Trees Auto Chevrolet Camaro took the green flag leading her class, but Richard Forsythe had an incredibly fast No. 58 GSpeed/Sambuca Restaurant Chevrolet Corvette and was able to pass Krpata by lap seven. Forsythe led Krpata while Kaylee Bryson (No. 02 Logical Systems Inc./Sam Pierce Chevrolet Corvette) struggled in third following a qualifying crash that forced her to start last.

Bryson had to retire due to overheating after the race’s halfway point, so it was just Krpata and Forsythe battling for the race win. It appeared that Forsythe would wrap up the victory, but on lap 65, he suddenly lost power, coming to a stop on the racing surface. His misfortune allowed Krpata to make the pass to earn her first-career Trans Am victory, and also forced the race to end under yellow-flag conditions.

“This is insane; this is absolutely a dream come true,” said Krpata. “I can’t believe it. You know, we went from regional racing as a father-daughter team to a Trans Am winner. It’s insane. I just had to push and make it through. I actually remember coming here as a kid at four years old. It’s crazy. It’s a weird, weird feeling. We’re coming home, and it’s great to be here. I enjoy the track very much.”

GT

Joey DaSilva (No. 67 Ave Motorsports Toyota Supra) was the fastest GT qualifier and led the class for every lap of the race. Chris Coffey, who has dominated so far this season in his No. 97 Norwood Auto Italia/Traffic Grafix Maserati MC GT4, appeared to be in a position to challenge DaSilva in the end, but a lapped car in another class made contact with him and interrupted his forward progress. Coffey crossed the finish line second behind DaSilva, while Michael Saia (No. 13 KMC/Rapid Performance Management/Motul Porsche GT3 Cup 997.1) finished third.

“The first half of this race, I just tried to kill my tires as much as I possibly could to get away from this guy [Coffey],” said DaSilva. “And of course, halfway through, I start seeing him come down that front straight a little bit closer every time I crossed that finish line. So, I just counted down the laps. My driving coach kept counting them down. I was like ‘Oh no, he’s too close.’ But thankfully, that double yellow came out and solidified everything.

“It was a great run, man, thank you guys for having me. Thanks to the vets. Thank you to my parents, my daughter, my son for coming out, my father-in-law, my driving coach Roger Cody, Tony Ave, Ave Motorsports. Thank all of you guys, seriously.”

Matos scores long-awaited Lime Rock TA2 victory

Rafa Matos added to his record as the winningest driver in the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli’s CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series, earning his 22nd-career victory in the Trans Am Memorial Day Classic at the Lime Rock SpeedTour. The two-time champion led every lap from start to finish to earn his long-awaited first win at Lime Rock Park. Matos shared the podium with Evan Slater, who returned to the series for the first time in 2024 to finish second, and Thomas Annunziata, who drove from the very back of the field to finish third.

Taking the green flag from the point position, Matos had a flawless start in his No. 60 Concord American Flagpole Ford Mustang, pulling ahead of Slater’s No. 17 CUBE 3/Franklin Road/M1 Ford Mustang, which started beside him on the front row. Fourth-place starter Ben Maier (No. 80 BOE Marine/Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang) quickly worked his way around Jake Drew (No. 77 Silver Hare Racing/PRG Chevrolet Camaro), claiming the third position by the conclusion of the first lap. Far behind them, Thomas Annunziata (No. 90 Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang), who was forced to start 20th after a technical infraction during qualifying disallowed his time, began a march to the front with terrific speed, entering the top 10 after only six laps and claiming the eighth position by the first full-course caution on lap 15.

When racing resumed on lap 19, Matos easily maintained his lead, while Annunziata had an impressive restart, jumping up to the sixth position. While Matos, Slater, Maier and Drew led the field, Annunziata took on Thomas Merrill (No. 26 HP Tuners/Cope Race Cars Ford Mustang), passing him for the fifth position on lap 22. Another double yellow on lap 24 re-racked the field for a lap-31 restart, which fortunately remained green, despite mid-pack mayhem sending two Pro/Am Challenge competitors spinning in traffic. The top five ran nose to tail while top-10 drivers Merrill, Boris Said Jr. (No. 75 HendrickCars.com/Silver Hare Chevrolet Camaro), Adrian Wlostowski (No. 3 CMI/Spot-On Services Ford Mustang), Josh Hurley (No. 8 Greenlight Simulation/BCR Ford Mustang) and Gio Ruggiero (No. 40 Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang) jockeyed aggressively for position.

While Matos and Slater were smoothly making laps in the front, Annunziata stalked Drew, claiming the fourth position by lap 47. He then took on Maier, making his way around him on lap 55 to claim third place. A full-course yellow on lap 57 regrouped the field for an eight-lap shootout beginning on lap 60. Annunziata was all over Slater after the restart, cleanly but aggressively challenging him for the runner-up spot, but Slater was flawless in his defense. As Matos clicked off the laps from the lead, a big crash with two laps remaining brought out the yellow flag, forcing the race to end under caution. Matos earned his 22nd-career victory, followed across the finish line by Slater and Annunziata. Maier and Drew rounded out the top five.

“It’s an amazing feeling right now,” said Matos. “I’ve never had luck here at Lime Rock Park; I’ve always had something happen: a lapped car or rain or something breaking on the car. But the Nitro Motorsports guys prepared an amazing car. Not only my car, but they prepared all four race cars to be the best of the best. To come out here and put on a good show for the fans, it’s an amazing time. I’ve got to thank Chris Dyson for allowing us to compete at the highest level with Concord American Flagpole. This is Dyson’s home track and it’s a very special event for him, and we’re really happy to deliver a good result. This should put us in the lead for the championship, so it’s a good day for me, for [teammate] Thomas [Annunziata], and for everyone on the team. Just a really good day.”

The highlight show of Saturday’s race will air on MAVTV on Thursday, May 30 at 8:00 p.m. ET.

The CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series next hit the track at Pittsburgh International Race Complex, June 7-9.

The Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli returns to action at the Lime Rock SpeedTour for Lime Rock Park’s Trans Am Memorial Day Classic. Trans Am racing at the Park on Memorial Day weekend has become a longstanding tradition since the series took the green flag for the first time at Lime Rock on Memorial Day of 1967. Since then, 22 of Trans Am’s 40 races held at Lime Rock have been on Memorial Day Weekend.

At 1.478 miles long, Lime Rock Park is the shortest track on Trans Am’s 2024 schedule, but the long weekend is full of festivities. In addition to racing by Trans Am’s TA/XGT/SGT/GT classes and the CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series, the Lime Rock SpeedTour includes action from the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association and International GT on the track on Friday, Saturday and Monday. On Sunday, the on-track action pauses while Lime Rock hosts the Connecticut Craft Beer Grand Prix, as well as the Royals’ Garage Car Show.

To honor veterans over the Memorial Day holiday, tickets to this weekend’s races are free for active military members, veterans, and their families with a valid ID.

Skip Barber honored

As part of what Lime Rock Park is dubbing the “Year of Skip,” racing legend Skip Barber will be honored this weekend as part of the opening ceremonies of the CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series race on Saturday. Prior to the race, the track will hold a dedication of its Timing and Scoring tower on the Sam Posey Straight in Barber’s name. Barber will also serve as the Grand Marshal of the race.

Barber’s journey in racing began long before he became a household name. From his early days as a competitive racer to his later years as a respected mentor, his career has been defined by a relentless pursuit of greatness. His eponymous Skip Barber Racing School, founded in 1975, became a mecca for aspiring racers, providing them with the tools and knowledge needed to succeed on and off the track. One such graduate of the school is three-time TA champion Chris Dyson.

Barber had a brief racing history in the Trans Am Series. Barber competed in three-career races, scoring a pair of top-five finishes in the over 2-Liter category in 1966 and 1968, and had one additional Trans Am start in 1974.

In the Winners Circle
This Friday, Trans Am will be joined at the racetrack by 150 students who are part of the Winners Circle Project, a non-profit organization which has been meticulously designed to inspire fresh, young, innovative minds through STEAM programs embedded in the exciting world of car racing. Throughout the course of one academic year, high school students build a Factory Five vehicle from the ground up. This year will see the participation of five different schools, and their race cars will be displayed in the paddock and driven around the track by program ambassador Chris Dyson and other Trans Am drivers. The students will receive a technical inspection presentation from Trans Am Technical Director Aaron Coalwell, take a paddock tour with TV commentator Ben Cissell, visit the Pirelli tire station and Sunoco fuel station, and interact with drivers such as Kaylee Bryson, Rafa Matos, Tomy Drissi, Adam Andretti and Connor Mosack before one school’s vehicle is named this year’s winner.

Past winners at Lime Rock
Four drivers entered in four different classes have previously stood on the top step of the podium at Lime Rock Park. TA’s Chris Dyson and TA2’s Thomas Merrill are both tied with TA driver Dorsey Schroeder for the most Trans Am wins at the track, with three victories each.

Looking for a repeat
The 2024 season has been a testament to the depth of talent in the Trans Am Series, with poles and podiums as varied as the competitors themselves. So far this season, there has not been a repeat winner in the TA class, with Paul Menard (No. 3 Menards/Master Force Tools Ford Mustang) taking the checkered flag in the season-opening event at Sebring International Raceway. Adam Andretti (No. 17 Top Liner/Go Share Chevrolet Camaro) earned his first TA class win since 2019 at Road Atlanta on his birthday, driving the new Burtin Racing chassis to its first victory. At NOLA Motorsports Park, Chris Dyson (No. 16 GYM WEED Ford Mustang) finally visited GYM WEED Winners Circle for the first time this season. There also has not been a repeat pole winner yet this season, with Ernie Francis Jr. taking the top starting spot at Sebring, Dyson earning the pole at Road Atlanta, and Menard qualifying fastest at NOLA.

While XGT and GT have both had repeat winners, with Danny Lowry (No. 42 Bennett/BridgeHaul/Pitboxes.com Mercedes AMG GT3) winning every XGT event and Chris Coffey (No. 97 Norwood Auto Italia/Traffic Grafix Maserati MC GT4) sweeping GT, the SGT class has not seen a repeat victor. Lee Saunders (No. 84 LandSearch LLC Dodge Viper) won the opening event at Sebring, Richard Forsythe (No. 58 GSpeed/Sambuca Restaurant Chevrolet Corvette) was victorious at Road Atlanta, and Kaylee Bryson (No. 02 Logical Systems Inc./Sam Pierce Chevrolet Corvette) earned her first-career Trans Am win at NOLA.

Dyson going for four
Success at Lime Rock Park has been a Memorial Day tradition for Chris Dyson in the No. 16 GYM WEED Ford Mustang, who is looking for his fourth victory at the track this weekend. Lime Rock is the home track for Dyson and his Poughkeepsie, N.Y.-based CD Racing team, and Dyson began his racing career there as a participant in the Skip Barber Racing School in 1994. In the four times he has visited the Connecticut racetrack with Trans Am, he has driven to GYM WEED Winners Circle three times and finished second once.

Dyson scored his first win of 2024 in Trans Am’s last outing at NOLA Motorsports Park, and currently sits second in the point standings after what has been an uncharacteristically difficult start to the season. The three-time champion hopes to continue his Lime Rock podium streak and overcome an eight-point deficit to leave the track at the top of the standings.

Wreaths across America
As part of this year’s Memorial Day Weekend event, Danny Lowry will sport a special livery on his No. 42 Bennett/BridgeHaul/Pitboxes.com Mercedes AMG GT3, a patriotic paint scheme headlined by Wreaths Across America, a non-profit organization that lays millions of wreaths on military gravesites across the United States and around the world at Christmastime. Lowry, a former Marine, and his sponsors, Bennett and BridgeHaul, are partners with Wreaths Across America, and the organization’s founder Morrill Worcester and executive director Karen Worcester will be on site for Monday’s Memorial Day race. Find out more by visiting WreathsAcrossAmerica.org.

Kaylee Bryson making history
At NOLA Motorsports Park last month, Kaylee Bryson won her first-career Trans Am race in her No. 02 Logical Systems Inc./Sam Pierce Chevrolet Corvette, standing atop the podium in the SGT class. While women like Cindi Lux have won in SGT before, Bryson’s success has continued since Trans Am’s last outing, and has led to her making history. Just this past weekend, Bryson took the checkered flag at Belleville High Banks, becoming the first woman to win a USAC National event and the first woman to win a Silver Crown event.

David Hampton making national debut
Followers of the Trans Am Series Western Championship will see a familiar name on the entry list for Lime Rock Park. David Hampton (No. 14 AR Motorsports Porsche Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport) will make his National Championship debut this weekend. Hampton has been off to an incredibly successful start this season, standing atop the podium at every GT class race in the Western Championship so far this year. Hampton has amassed five victories in the doubleheaders at Thunderhill Raceway Park, Sonoma Raceway and the single race at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

Home game for CUBE 3
Lime Rock Park is the home track for CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series sponsor CUBE 3, which is headquartered in North Andover, Mass. This season, the CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series has experienced its most exciting racing to date, with four unique winners in the opening four races. Connor Zilisch took the checkered flag in the No. 7 Silver Hare Racing Chevrolet Camaro in the season opener at Sebring International Raceway, while 2022 champion Thomas Merrill earned an early victory at Road Atlanta in his No. 26 HP Tuners/Cope Race Cars Ford Mustang. Rafa Matos (No. 60 Concord American Flagpole/Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang) became the winningest driver in TA2 history when he scored his 21st victory at NOLA Motorsports Park. In the series’ last event at World Wide Technology Raceway, Ben Maier (No. 80 BOE Marine/Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang) earned his first-career victory from the pole.

In addition to sponsoring the series, this weekend, CUBE 3 will have a driver in their stable as well. Portsmouth, N.H. native Evan Slater will carry sponsorship from the company on his No. 17 CUBE 3/Franklin Road/M1 Chevrolet Camaro in his return to the series.

Evan Slater returns
Evan Slater will be making his first start of 2024 this weekend, taking the green flag at his home track in the No. 17 CUBE 3/Franklin Road/M1 Chevrolet Camaro. In addition to not being far from his home in Portsmouth, N.H., Lime Rock Park is the site of Slater’s first Trans Am start back in 2021, which is also when he introduced sponsor CUBE 3 to the Trans Am Series. Slater’s best finish at the track came in 2022, when he finished second. He made his most recent Trans Am start last year at Watkins Glen International.

Connor Mosack doing the Triple
Every year as the Indianapolis 500 approaches, there is always talk of drivers “doing the double,” racing in both “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600. This Memorial Day weekend, Connor Mosack will be doing triple duty, running the 200-mile NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race and 150-mile ARCA Menards Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway before heading to Lime Rock Park on Saturday to race in the CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series behind the wheel of the No. 77 Silver Hare Racing/PRG Chevrolet Camaro, laying down an expected total of 450 miles of racing. Not only that, but because Mosack will miss practice and qualifying on Friday, he will have to start from the rear of the field for Saturday’s shootout. Mosack did something similar last October, running the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway before starting in the back for the TA2 race at VIRginia International Raceway, where he drove all the way up from 32nd to sixth.

Josh Hurley comes with experience
Although he has never competed in a TA2 race at Lime Rock Park, Josh Hurley in the No. 20 Greenlight Simulation/BCR Ford Mustang has had plenty of success at the 1.478-mile track. Hurley has driven to podium finishes at Lime Rock in Trans Am’s TA class (finishing third in 2019), as well as in IMSA and TDI Cup. He has also scored a pole award at the track in IMSA. This experience should help the 2020 Trans Am Esports Champion maintain the momentum he has from scoring his first TA2 podium at World Wide Technology Raceway two weeks ago.

Hurley will have a busy Memorial Day Weekend, as he will also be assisting Norwood Auto Italia’s two GT entries with driver coaching and engineering duties in Monday’s event. He also welcomes two new sponsors this weekend, adding Moonlight Physicians and Logic Automation Services to his championship effort.

Merrill hoping to extend streak
2022 champion Thomas Merrill is off to a strong start early in 2024, currently leading the standings in the CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series. Merrill scored a victory at Road Atlanta in his No. 26 HP Tuners/Cope Race Cars Ford Mustang and followed that up with a podium at NOLA Motorsports Park, putting him at a 13-point advantage coming into this weekend. Merrill has a history of success at Lime Rock Park and is tied for the most wins at the track by a single driver with three. Merrill has won the last two races at Lime Rock and hopes to extend his streak this weekend while also extending his points lead.

Maier a winner
Ben Maier in the No. 80 BOE Marine/Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang bounced back from a heartbreaking race at NOLA Motorsports Park to win both the pole and the race in Trans Am’s last outing at World Wide Technology Raceway. He stood on the podium next to Nitro Motorsports teammate and 2023 champion Brent Crews, who finished second in the event. It was a special moment for 15-year-old Maier and 16-year-old Crews, who have both been working with Nick Tucker at Nitro Motorsports since 2016.

Sheehan heads home after first win
Lime Rock Park is the home track for Tom Sheehan (No. 97 Vixen Motorcycles/LTK Insulation Ford Mustang), who hails from Bow, N.H. Sheehan heads into Lime Rock as a winner, overcoming a rough start to the season to earn his first Pro/Am victory at World Wide Technology Raceway, marking the first time he has stood on the top step of a Trans Am podium in his 142 starts in the series. The “Iron Man” also heads into this weekend with more experience than anyone, as he is the only competitor in the field who has competed in all of the last eight events at the facility.

Pro/Am update
Barry Boes in the No. 27 Team SLR-M1 Racecars Ford Mustang sits atop the TA2 Pro/Am Challenge standings following back-to-back wins in the opening races, but the competition is sneaking up behind him. NOLA Motorsports Park winner Keith Prociuk (No. 9 HP Tuners/Cope Race Cars Ford Mustang) is just 10 points behind Boes, while Jared Odrick (No. 81 CB Motorsports Ford Mustang) and first-time winner Tom Sheehan are just two points apart in third and fourth, respectively. Read more about the exciting battles and new opportunities in the Pro/Am Challenge here.
