Los Blancos trail league leaders Barcelona by two points ahead of Week 19 and a win on Saturday afternoon will temporarily lift them just ahead of the defending champions. Getafe has enjoyed one of its best first halves of a top-flight campaign on record, and it could climb from sixth to as high as fourth should it take maximum spoils at home.
Manager Jose Borladas’ side suffered a 1-0 loss away to Villarreal in its last game before the Christmas interval, which ended a streak of six successive wins in all competitions (eight games unbeaten).
Barcelona is the only team to beat Getafe at Alfonso Perez in La Liga this season, and only three teams have clinched more than their 18 points at home: Blaugrana (25), Real (21) and Athletic Bilbao (20).
Zidane will be desperate not to lose more ground away from home and allow Barcelona to eke further ahead in the title race, though some key absences could upset their chances.
Real captain Sergio Ramos will be missed in central defense as he sits out the trip to Getafe due to suspension, while Eden Hazard is still out of commission with a hairline fracture in his foot. Left-back Marcelo (calf) and winger Lucas Vazquez (toe) could be in the running to return.
Left-back Mathias Olivera is suspended for the match following his red card in the loss to Villarreal, while left-sided whiz Marc Cucurella—on loan from Barca—will hope to do his parent club a favor.
Getafe frustrated Real to a 0-0 stalemate when these teams last met at this venue in April, and their expanded horizons since then hint at even greater prospects this time around.
