‘Inside LFA with Ron Kruck:’ Looking back on Championship July, ahead to Phase II

Check out the latest on what’s happening in LFA.

“Inside LFA with Ron Kruck” is LFA’s weekly look at prior and upcoming fights, as well as the latest news and notes within the promotion, and you can watch Episode 8 in the video above.

WHAT’S COVERED:

  • With every one of LFA’s titleholders having moved on to top-level promotions, the organization had plenty of belts to hand away in finding a new crop of talent. LFA did just that, handing out four championship belts in July.
  • Of course, it’s not just LFA champions that earn the call to the UFC. [autotag]Joaquin Buckley[/autotag] reminded the world that a strong performance in any LFA bout might earn you an octagon invite.
  • Even those that don’t get straight into the UFC still have options, as [autotag]Jordan Leavitt[/autotag] proved with his Dana White’s Contender Series slot.
  • After a quick two-week hiatus, LFA will return with Phase II of the organization’s 2020 comeback with four consecutive weeks of events, starting on Aug. 21, all of which take place in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Boston Salmon suffers broken orbital, cheek bone from illegal knee at LFA 84

Manager provides health update on Boston Salmon, who took blatant illegal knee at LFA.

[autotag]Boston Salmon[/autotag]’s shocking fight ending earlier this month had big consequences on his health.

The former UFC fighter took a blatant illegal knee to the head in an 150-pound catchweight bout against Shawn West at LFA 84 on July 10. The illegal knee knocked Salmon (7-3) out cold at the 0:53 mark of Round 2, and a disqualification win was awarded to the 29-year-old. The video of the illegal knee became a big topic in combat sports news.

The Hawaiian suffered a broken orbital and cheek bone, according to his manager Brian Butler of SuckerPunch Entertainment, who on Tuesday released a statement on the incident. Butler, who attached a gruesome image to his statement, said Salmon is still recovering from the injuries.

Butler also called for the commission overseeing the event in South Dakota to take disciplinary action on West beyond the disqualification defeat in hopes to set higher accountability for similar illegal actions (via Instagram):

UPDATE: The incident that took place in LFA on July 10th was extremely unfortunate. We believe Boston is a special talent and is able to compete with the best in the world. His stent in the UFC did not go as planned because it was determined by physicians that the weight cut to bantamweight was too extreme for him to be able to perform to his ability. We were extremely excited to restart Boston’s run at featherweight with @lfafighting and get him back to a big show. Boston was in control of this fight and just settling into his range and timing in the 2nd round when both he and his opponent, Shawn West, landed simultaneous hooks causing both to be flashed and knocked down. As Boston was getting back to his feet he was hit with an illegal knee that ended the night. What we have to focus on here first and foremost is Boston‘s health. The knee landed with incredible force and caused Boston to suffer a broken orbital and cheek bone. Aside from the DQ we feel there should be disciplinary actions enforced by the commision to set a higher precedence on these types of fouls. There was no question about the legality of the knee and Boston was awarded the win at the end of the contest. It goes without saying that this is not the way Boston wanted the fight to be determined. As a team we are sitting down with Boston and his family to discuss what we want to do moving forward. Boston would like to thank LFA and their staff for getting him back on stage and giving him the opportunity to perform. For now Boston is going to undergo further examination and we will determine the next steps as we go. #bossteam

West, for his part, did offer an apology to Salmon and his team in the aftermath of the brutal foul. He claimed responsibility for his actions, as well.

Salmon will go further examination in his road to recovery and later asses his next career move. Prior to the LFA bout, Salmon was on a two-fight skid which marked the entirety of his UFC tenure. Salmon entered the UFC in 2017 after winning a contract at Dana White’s Contender Series.

Salmon released a statement of his own shortly thereafter. He thanked his supporters and reiterated he’s taking the proper precautions with his recovery (via Instagram):

LFA 84 postponed, April events under review as promotion responds to coronavirus crisis

Legacy Fighting Alliance (LFA) has announced the postponement of its upcoming LFA 84 event in Phoenix and placed its April events under review amid coronavirus fears.

LFA 84 is the latest MMA event casualty of the coronavirus pandemic.

The event, scheduled for March 20 in Phoenix, was due to feature a battle for the vacant middleweight title between Daniel Madrid and Impa Kasanganay. But the promotion announced Saturday the event has now been postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date.

A press release from Legacy Fighting Alliance laid out the organization’s approach to its schedule amid the health crisis that is currently affecting the sporting world.

LFA officials have been closely monitoring the latest developments regarding the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic nationwide and abroad.

In response to growing awareness, concern, and imminent threat of exacerbating the spread of the virus via large crowds at our live events, LFA officials have coordinated with government officials, state athletic commissions, and our venue partners throughout the week.

We have collectively determined that moving forward with LFA 84 on Friday, March 20th in Phoenix, Arizona would not be safe given the world’s current health crisis.

LFA 84 will be postponed and rescheduled at a later date.

The promotion also has two events scheduled for April, with LFA 85 and 86 scheduled for Colorado and South Dakota on April 3 and April 17, respectively, but the promotion said those shows are both “currently under review.” All three affected LFA events were scheduled to be streamed live on UFC Fight Pass.

“Providing a safe environment for our fans, fighters, and staff is our top priority,” LFA’s statement continued.

“Through public health agencies such as the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), we are staying on top of the latest updates and developments as they occur. We are also in close communication with local public health officials to determine what additional safeguards may need to be implemented moving forward.

“This is an evolving situation and any actions we take will be consistent with guidelines from these agencies.”

LFA 84 set for Phoenix; Impa Kasangany vs. Daniel Madrid title fight headlines

LFA 84 is officially on tap – and the middleweight title will be on the line.

The vacant middleweight title will be filled at LFA 84.

The event is set to take place Friday, March 20 at Arizona Federal Theatre in Phoenix and is headlined by a middleweight title fight between [autotag]Impa Kasanganay[/autotag] and [autotag]Daniel Madrid[/autotag]. The card will stream live on UFC Fight Pass. The promotion announced details Tuesday.

A victor on the most recent season of Dana White’s Contender Series, Kasanganay (6-0 MMA) was not offered a contract by the UFC brass. UFC president Dana White said glowing things about Kasanganay’s dominant upset win over Kailin Hill, but wanted the six-fight pro to return to the regional scene to get more experience before taking the step up.

In November, Kasanagany was named to MMA Junkie’s monthly edition of “On the Doorstep.” However, his bout that month was cancelled when Kasanganay had a medical issue the night prior to the fight.

As for Madrid (13-3 MMA), the 35-year-old has risen quietly through the 185-pound regional ranks. Madrid has won four straight fights – all by submission. The Arizona-based fighter will have a home game of sorts, when he competes for the LFA title.

The LFA middleweight championship was vacated when then-titleholder Brendan Allen signed with the UFC in July.

Other additions to the card include a bantamweight bout between [autotag]Richard Palencia[/autotag] (8-0) and DWCS alum [autotag]Desmond Torres[/autotag] (7-2), a bantamweight fight between Kevin Natvidad (8-1) and [autotag]Kyle Estrada[/autotag] (10-4), and a featherweight matchup between [autotag]Luke Faultersack[/autotag] (6-3) and DWCS and Bellator veteran [autotag]Kamuela Kirk[/autotag] (9-3).
