Alabama fails first big test of new season with loss to No. 12 Purdue

Alabama fell, 87-78, at Purdue Friday night as the Crimson Tide’s early season 3-point shooting woes continued.

Trey Kaufman-Penn had a game-high 26 points, Braden Smith had a double-double, and the hot-shooting Purdue Boilermakers handed No. 2 Alabama basketball its first loss of the season, 87-78, inside a raucous Mackey Arena Friday night.

In the first big nonconference test for Nate Oats’ team, Alabama (3-1) seemed to be playing with nerves early on, missing open looks and not finishing baskets. Their struggles from behind the arc continued for a third straight game. Alabama shot 31 percent (9-for-29) from downtown and 44 percent overall from the field.

Top scorer Mark Sears was held to 15 points and made just one of six shots from behind the arc. Freshman Labaron Philon’s 18 points off the bench led the Crimson Tide.

By contrast, No. 12 Purdue (4-0) shot a lights-out 9-of-16 from 3-point range and made 49.2 percent of its baskets from the field.

Alabama would use an 11-2 run in the second half to take its biggest lead of the night at 65-59 following a 3-pointer from Auburn transfer Aden Holloway with 11 minutes left in the game.

The lead lasted no time. Purdue surged with a decisive 13-0 run that included three consecutive 3-point shots by freshman guard C.J. Cox. As the game wore on, Alabama missed 11 of 12 shots at one point as Purdue built a 75-68 lead with under five minutes left.

Smith scored 17 points and had 10 assists for Purdue. Fletcher Loyer was another hot shooter, adding 17 points, as well.

Alabama got 12 points from Grant Nelson and 11 from Latrell Wrightsell.

Alabama basketball releases high-energy Final Four trailer

Not ready for the Final Four of March Madness? Watch this trailer by Alabama basketball as the team prepares to take on UConn and you’ll be ready to take the court alongside them.

The day has come for the college basketball national championship matchup to be decided. As the NC State Wolfpack take on the Purdue Boilermakers and the Alabama Crimson Tide take on the UConn Huskies in the Final Four of the 2024 March Madness Tournament.

Though Alabama is not the favorite in this matchup, with even the staff at Roll Tide Wire being split on score predictions, the team seems ready to roll.

As Crimson Tide head coach Nate Oats has said during this week, there’s not much stress on his team. They feel as if they are playing with house money. They are happy to be where they are at but don’t feel the pressure that UConn likely faces to get to the national championship game. That ease of mind could be a real game changer when it comes time to tip-off.

On social media, Alabama basketball shared a trailer for the game against the Huskies and it has fans ready to line up alongside the team to take the court.

Narrated by Alabama alum and ESPN personality Rece Davis, the Crimson Tide is ready to roll into the Final Four with the mentality of ‘Why stop now?’

Will Latrell Wrightsell play against UConn in the Final Four?

The latest on Alabama’s Latrell Wrightsell

The Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball team has made an incredible, historic run in March Madness on its way to the program’s first-ever Final Four appearance.

Much of Alabama’s run has come without the help of sharp-shooting guard, Latrell Wrightsell Jr., who had been battling a head injury that he sustained in the second half of the round of 32 matchup against Grand Canyon.

On Thursday in Phoenix, the players and coaches were made available to the media and Wrightsell was asked about his availability for the Tide’s semifinal matchup against the defending national champions, the UConn Huskies.

“Yeah, I’ll be able to play”, Wrightsell told Nick Kelly of the Tuscaloosa News.

While nothing from Nate Oats or any other staff members has made it official, it appears Wrightsell is back healthy and should be available against the Huskies.

Alabama will need all the help it can get against a Dan Hurley-led UConn team that has steamrolled the competition in the NCAA Tournament.

Nate Oats provides injury update on Latrell Wrightsell ahead of Final Four

Will Alabama get its sharp-shooting guard back for the Final Four?

On Tuesday, [autotag]Nate Oats[/autotag] and the Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball team left Tuscaloosa to head back west to Phoenix to finish preparing for their Final Four matchup with the UConn Huskies.

Before the team loaded up on the jet, Coach Oats would take time to speak with the media and discuss the upcoming matchup with the infallible Huskies but would also provide the latest on injured senior, sharp-shooting guard, Latrell Wrightsell.

While nothing is set in stone just yet and anything can happen, it does appear that Wrightsell is trending towards being available for the Crimson Tide’s first-ever Final Four appearance.

“Today was the first day Wrightsell was able to practice. He was limited in what he could do, but glad he was out there. He’s got day-to-day evaluations. Based on how tomorrow morning’s evaluation goes, we’ll see where he goes the rest of the week. Our hope is that he’s gonna be able to play on Saturday, though.”

Wrightsell’s availability against UConn is critical if the Crimson Tide want to try and pull off the upset. Having him back in the lineup would allow Alabama to have better spacing on offense and bring the Huskies’ shot-blocking center, Donovan Clingan away from the basket.

Alabama’s Latrell Wrightsell shares March Madness injury update for Final Four

Alabama guard Latrell Wrightsell has been out of the lineup with a head injury for two March Madness games. Now, there’s an update ahead of the Final Four.

Alabama Crimson Tide basketball guard Latrell Wrightsell has been a key contributor for the team’s offense but has missed a few March Madness games due to an injury suffered in the round of 32. Now, there’s a Final Four injury update.

Despite missing games against the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Clemson Tigers, Alabama was able to get by and earn a few wins, but his absence was felt.

After the Elite Eight win that sent the Crimson Tide to its first Final Four in program history, Wrightsell told Blake Byler of Bama Central that he plans on being back for the biggest game in Alabama basketball history against the No. 1 seed UCONN Huskies.

The Crimson Tide is the underdog heading into the Final Four matchup, but they can see it competitive and have a chance at winning if its top contributors are healthy and performing at a high level. Mark Sears, Grant Nelson, Jarin Stevenson and Nick Pringle are difference-makers. Possibly having Wrightsell back would be a huge addition for Nate Oats and his team.

Latrell Wrightsell ruled day-to-day ahead of Sweet 16

Will Alabama have its sharp-shooting senior back for the Sweet 16?

On Thursday night from Los Angeles, [autotag]Nate Oats[/autotag] will lead the Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball team in a Sweet 16 matchup against the North Carolina Tar Heels. The winner will earn a spot in the Elite Eight, a feat the Alabama program has only accomplished once in its history.

Tide fans have been curious since Sunday night if Alabama would have starting guard Latrell Wrightsell in the lineup against the Tar Heels and Coach Oats provided the latest on Wednesday afternoon following the team’s practice.

In short, Wrightsell’s status remains uncertain for tomorrow night’s matchup as Coach Oats ruled the sharp-shooting senior as “day-to-day”.

“Latrell is being reevaluated by the medical staff every day”, Oats told reporters. “He’s basically on a day-to-day basis now. I’m not sure if he’ll be available or not.”

Wrightsell’s availability will be critical for Alabama’s success against the top-seeded Tar Heels.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to monitor the status of Wrightsell leading up to tipoff tomorrow night.

Alabama basketball drops three spots in Week 19 AP Poll

How does Alabama Hoops fare in the Week 19 AP Poll?

After dropping three of their final fives games of the regular season, Alabama basketball was able to cap off SEC play with a nice 92-88 OT victory over Arkansas on Saturday. The Tide trailed 74-68 with 2:05 left in the game, but a massive [autotag]Grant Nelson[/autotag] three pointer sparked life back into the Crimson Tide.

It might have been a different story if [autotag]Latrell Wrightsell[/autotag] was able to stay healthy, but with him missing time late in the season, Alabama just never looked the same. The Volunteers were unfortunately able to pull away and earn the title of SEC regular season champs after the series sweep of the Tide. Alabama, alongside Auburn, South Carolina and Kentucky finished the season in second place with a 13-5 record. With post-season play starting this week, the Crimson Tide will be the three-seed in the SEC tournament this week.

The Week 19 AP Poll saw the Crimson Tide drop three spots after going 1-1 last week. However, they should still be a four-seed in March Madness per ESPN’s Joe Lunardi.
