Tennessee defensive lineman ‘probably going to miss the rest of the season’
KNOXVILLE — Tennessee (2-4, 2-4 SEC) is set to host Texas A&M (5-1, 5-1 SEC) Saturday at Neyland Stadium.
Third-year Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt kicked off game week Monday and provided an injury update for senior defensive lineman LaTrell Bumphus.
“He’s probably going to be out 4-6 weeks, so based off the season, that probably will be it for this year,” Pruitt said of Bumphus.
Pruitt mentioned that someone fell on Bumphus during pregame at Arkansas causing the injury.
“It was unfortunate with LaTrell,” Pruitt said. “During warmups, somebody fell into his leg there and he’s probably going to miss the rest of the season, so that’s unfortunate for him.”
Bumphus has played in four games this season for the Vols, totaling 14 tackles, 1.5 tackles for a loss, one sack and one quarterback hurry.
The 6-foot-3, 290-pound defensive lineman from Savannah, Tennessee has appeared in 38 contests since 2017 during his career at UT.
LaTrell Bumphus details entering 2020 senior season.
KNOXVILLE – LaTrell Bumphus enters his senior season at Tennessee.
The defensive lineman has spent time on both sides of the ball during his 33-game career at Tennessee.
“The first two years I was at tight end and then Coach (Jeremy) Pruitt pulled me to the side and he thought for my best would be to go to the defensive line,” Bumphus said during the third week of fall training camp. “So really, I just trusted him and been there ever since.”
The 6-foot-3, 290-pound senior from Hardin County High school in Savannah, Tennessee has totaled 24 tackles, seven TFLs, two sacks, one pass deflection and forced one fumble while playing for the Vols.
Bumphus also discussed what Tennessee needs to improve on throughout its defensive line unit in 2020.
The senior defensive lineman mentioned that working on “details at the point of attack” is an area to improve on.
“Coach (Jimmy) Brumbaugh and all the other coaches are doing a great job, making sure that we understand,” Bumphus said. “We always try to lean on each other and give words of encouragement because sometimes everybody has a bad day here and there. We always try to be positive.”
Bumphus detailed how he is “a whole lot more comfortable” this season within Tennessee’s defense.
“Each day I keep working and strive to get where I am at,” Bumphus said. “I do think with all of the help around here, I will reach my goal.
“As a d-lineman, I’d like us to be top five in the whole NCAA and be the No. 1 in SEC football.”
