Raiders rookie CB Nate Hobbs ‘It factor’ earns him game ball, starting nickel job to open season

The final player to step behind the podium following the Raiders 17-16 preseason win over the Rams was rookie cornerback Nate Hobbs. The fifth-rounder had all but locked up the starting nickel job to begin this season and he intercepted and ran away with it in this game. Literally.

Hobbs had a phenomenal game in LA which came on the heels of a standout performance in the preseason opener as well. Jon Gruden said Hobbs has even surpassed his expectations when they drafted him out of Illinois.

“I’m really proud of him. I’m really excited to see what he does in his future,” Gruden said of Hobbs. “We tried to summarize him a couple of days ago. He has the ‘it’ factor, he rarely makes the same mistake twice, he loves football, and he eats it up. He’s one of the energizers of our defense. He’s walked in here and given us a lot of skills that we can utilize certainly.”

This performance earned Hobbs a game ball, which Gruden said was something he doesn’t typically give out for preseason games.

I passed Hobbs on the way out of the press conference room and the young corner had not one, but two footballs in his possession. One was his game ball, the other was the ball he intercepted. Quite the haul for the quiet, young fifth-round rookie.

Hobbs got the interception through no accident. After having played the slot through the first half, he was moved to outside corner to see how he fared. On his third snap, the Rams tested him. He passed. With flying colors. He diagnosed the play, watched the quarterback, and tracked the ball on a deep post pattern to pick it clean.

“I just shuffled, I saw one sit down and two kept going up the seam, so I just climbed,” Hobbs recalled of the play. “I don’t even think it’s in the playbook, but I was just trying to be a football player and I saw the ball come out of the quarterback’s hands and ran to the receiver and looked up and the ball was there.”

That play wasn’t out of nowhere either. He had two nice tackles on the Rams’ first drive, including one on third down to force a punt. And later he had a pass breakup as well. And this performance was after he had a hard sack on Seahawks QB Geno Smith in the preseason opener and had held his own in the scrimmages with the Rams this week as well. Prompting Josh Jacobs to gush about him.

“I love that dude,” Jacobs said of Hobbs this week. “So, he’ll be right next to me all the time in the locker room, he’s not too far. But I love him. I love his energy, I just love the way he plays the game. He has that never-quit attitude, wanting to be a better player and he flies around. You can see the confidence in his game. I just try to talk to him every chance I get, tell him he’s doing a good job and just to keep stacking days. So, I’m excited to see it.”

Hobbs simply shows a level of play and understanding you don’t expect from a rookie, let alone a fifth-round pick. Particularly the part about not making the same mistake twice.

“I feel like it’s trying to be a pro at what I do. If I’m professional, I can’t keep making the same mistakes,” Hobbs said. “At the end of the day, this is something that they trusted me to do and they’re paying me to do it, so I feel like I’m a pro I shouldn’t make the same mistakes. You’re going to make mistakes, I’m a rookie, and I’m a football player. You’re gonna make mistakes in the game, just don’t let it be the same one. So, I just try to go about it that way.”

Through much of camp, Nevin Lawson has been pegged as the starter at the nickel spot. Leaving the competition seemingly between Hobbs and Amik Robertson. But Hobbs has now put some distance between him and Robertson in that competition. And even if Lawson is still currently seen as the starter — which he may not be at this point — he’s suspended the first two games.

Last week Gruden said Hobbs “may be the opening day starter for us.” Tonight he put Hobbs in the same sentence as second-round rookie Tre’von Moehrig who has been pegged as the full-time starting free safety since the moment they drafted him. Which is to say Hobbs has earned the starting job for the season opener and perhaps beyond. If he can play like this in the regular season, how do you even consider taking him out?

Raiders promising young LB Javin White carted off field with knee injury

Raiders promising young LB Javin White carted off field with knee injury

The second half of the Raiders preseason matchup with the Rams began with disaster. On the third play of the third quarter, both Malcolm Koonce and Javin White stayed down on the field with apparent leg injuries.

Koonce would eventually get up and make his way to the sideline, though limping over. He then attempted to jog off his injury several times, only to be sat down by trainers when he was unable to do so successfully. Trainers were looking at his left knee.

White stayed on the field longer. He too had a knee injury. But he was unable to get up or walk to the side on his own. Two defensive line teammates came out and put White’s arms over their shoulders and carried him to the side.

As they sat him on the trainer’s table, several concerned teammates came over to console him. After a brief time in the medical tent, a cart was brought out to take White off the field. He sat in the back of the cart sobbing with a towel over his head.

It appears his injury is a serious one, which is a real shame for White who was playing quite well, and had a real shot at cracking the roster, especially with the uncertainty surrounding the injury Nicholas Morrow suffered at Thursday’s scrimmage with the Rams.

5 Raiders set to make their 2021 preseason debut tonight vs Rams

5 Raiders set to make their 2021 preseason debut tonight vs Rams

There were probably a few Raiders players who you were hoping to see in their preseason opener last week in Las Vegas. At least five of those players figure to suit up to make their 2021 preseason debut tonight when the Raiders take on the Rams in LA.

QB Marcus Mariota

Mariota suited up for last week’s game and remained suited up throughout. But he had an injury he was nursing, so he was only going to see action in case of emergency. Instead the team played Nate Peterman for all but one snap. Case Cookus got that one — a handoff to the fullback.

Cookus was waived when Mariota returned to practice. With him healthy, he figures to get the start with Derek Carr a likely scratch. There was no preseason last year, but even if there had been Mariota would have missed it because he was injured. He appeared in one game last season, playing the final three quarters of the team’s week 14 game against the Chargers.

Mariota has struggled some in practice in terms of throwing interceptions. He will look to reclaim his place as Carr’s primary backup after a solid performance from Peterman last week.

DT Darius Stills

The most high profile undrafted rookie for the Raiders this year. Still was named the Big-12 Defensive Lineman of the Year in 2020, but went undrafted primarily due to size concerns. He had drawn praise from his coaches and teammates throughout offseason workouts and training camp before going down with an injury.

It appears Still may have broken his right hand. He practiced on Thursday against the Rams sporting a club cast on his right hand/wrist and figures to play with it tonight.

LB Te’von Coney

This week the Raiders brought back Coney who, like Stills, was a highly thought of undrafted free agent last year. The former Notre Dame linebacker could see some good reps due to an injury to Nick Kwiatkoski and Nicholas Morrow and Cory Littleton likely sitting this one out.

S Karl Joseph

Joseph was mentioned along with Casey Hayward as being a strong veteran presence for this team. But unlike Hayward, Joseph is not expected to start. He was injured for the preseason opener and returned last week. He will be looking to prove he is more than just a voice in the locker room, but that he can be a strong contributor on the field as well.

K Daniel Carlson

Carlson was on the reserve/COVID-19 list for the preseason opener, so Dominik Eberle handled kicking duties. Days later, Carlson returned and Eberle was waived to get down to 90 players. So, Carlson it is. At least for field goals. It’s possible the team gives punter Corliss Waitman a shot at kickoff duties just to see what he can do there.

5 position battles to watch in Raiders preseason matchup vs Rams

Five position battles to watch in Raiders preseason matchup vs Rams

Preseason continues tonight as the Raiders face the Rams in Los Angeles. From the sounds of it, the Raiders won’t be fielding their veteran starters for this one, just as was the case for the preseason opener last week. Those healthy players being held out have their jobs secured. Those taking the field are either battling for their spot on the depth chart or their spot on the team.

These are the top five position battles I’ll be watching tonight.

Trey Ragas vs BJ Emmons

These two undrafted rookie running back put on a show in the preseason opener in Las Vegas. Ragas led the team in rushing while Emmons broke off a few big runs. Both also scored touchdowns.

At this moment Ragas has the lead in the battle, but Emmons could get back into it with a big performance tonight. Both are vying to nab the third RB job with Jalen Richard out with an injury and no timetable for his return.

Zay Jones vs Willie Snead

Both of these guys are battling for what could be the final wide receiver spot on the roster. That is, if the team carries only five receivers. Snead is more established but Jones has been lighting it up of late, both in the first preseason game and in the scrimmages with the Rams this past week.

It’s certainly possible the team holds onto six receivers, but that’s not guaranteed. And that sixth receiver would be inactive most weeks. Look for Snead to try and remind the team that he can be a valuable weapon out of the slot.

Quinton Jefferson vs Darius Philon vs Solomon Thomas

These three 3-tech DTs were all added within hours of each other early in free agency. They all appeared to be in line to rotate at the 3-tech position, but with the addition of Gerald McCoy, there could be an odd man out in the group.

All three played in the preseason opener with Philon coming out with the best performance. With Johnathan Hankins as the lone pure NT on the team, it’s still possible Jefferson, Philon, and Thomas made the team, but they’re gonna have to earn it. No way any of them is taking a roster spot as granted.

Nate Hobbs vs Amik Robertson

The team seems to like Nevin Lawson as the starting slot cornerback, but Lawson won’t be available the first two weeks so either Hobbs or Robertson will get the start at the nickel to begin the season. The fifth round rookie Hobbs has jumped ahead of 2020 fourth round pick Robertson. We’ll see if that continues or if Robertson can get back into the competition.

Karl Joseph vs Tyree Gillespie

Joseph is the veteran safety while Gillespie is the rookie. Both missed significant time in camp to injury, and Joseph missed the preseason opener, so the door is still open for one of them to distinguish himself.

This is to be the next man up behind Johnathan Abram at the strong safety spot, but it could be more than that. It’s Abram’s job right now, but he will need to perform a lot better than he did last season in order to keep it. Joseph or Gillespie would also have to prove they are a better option. Joseph can also play free safety if needed.
