Watch: TE Darren Waller toys with Nasir Adderley on TD catch

Watch: TE Darren Waller posterizes Nasir Adderley on TD catch

Sometimes as a defender, you do everything you can do and it still isn’t good enough. Such was the case for Nasir Adderley attempting to defend Darren Waller in the end zone in the third quarter of the Raiders vs Chargers game.

On third and goal from the three-yard-line, Derek Carr dropped back and threw it to his 6-6 tight end who was well covered. Did I mention Waller is 6-6? Well, he used every bit of it along with some leaping ability to high-point and snag Carr’s pass for the touchdown. Adderley was right there. And he had no chance.

The touchdown was the second for the Raiders in the third quarter after going scoreless in the first half. The Chargers were up 21-0 at the half and that TD to Waller brought it to a one-score game at 21-14.

That is a big-time shift for the Raiders who had a net of 51 yards in the first half and just ONE first down. To go from that to two drives for touchdowns is quite the reverse of fortune.

Watch: WR Hunter Renfrow with big tackle pass breakup on fake punt

Watch: WR Hunter Renfrow with big tackle pass breakup on fake punt

They call him third-and-Renfrow. But he’s a lot more than that. We just all thought his repertoire was at least limited to receiving and returning. But, no. Hunter Renfrow is just a flat-out football player.

In the first quarter, the Chargers attempted a fake punt. Punter Ty Long made a good pass and Tevaughn Campbell made the catch…for an instant. Until the 5-10, 185-pound Renfrow put his helmet into the ball, knocking it free for the incompletion.

It was a huge play for Renfrow, who a few minutes later gave the Raiders their best field position of the day on a punt return. The Raiders were unable to capitalize as they went for it on fourth and three from the 37 and the pass to Josh Jacobs was stopped for no gain.

There haven’t been many highlights for the Raiders early on. This little gem by Renfrow is about it so far.

Host of former Chargers lead revamped Raiders defense into LA for primetime showdown

Raiders defense is full of former Chargers who will make their return to Los Angeles tonight

This season, the Raiders defense has a feel to it that is entirely unfamiliar to many of us; it’s actually a strength. The most underrated addition to this team this offseason was the hiring of Gus Bradley as defensive coordinator. He brought a new scheme, a new attitude, and a few new faces with him. It has made all the difference.

With any new coordinator, it can be important to have a few veterans who are familiar with his scheme. It helps the entire defense to have someone among the ranks who is well-versed in the terminology and assignments.

Bradley brought a familiar face with him to fill multiple positions on every level of the defense. Along the defensive line, there’s Darius Philon, Damion Square, and Yannick Ngakoue. In the linebacking corps, there’s Denzel Perryman and KJ Wright. And in the secondary, there’s Casey Hayward and Roderic Teamer.

Being that Bradley spent the past four years coaching the defense for the Chargers, most of those players come over from Los Angeles.

In particular Perryman, Hayward, Philon, Square, and Teamer will all make their first trips back to Los Angeles to face their former team as a member of the opposition.

Perryman, despite joining the team just a few weeks ago, is the Raiders’ leading tackler. As you might expect, he is downplaying the significance of facing the team with whom he spent the first six years of his NFL career.

“You just treat it like a normal football game,” said Perryman. “If you go out there and try to make it bigger than it is, you kind of lose focus on the big picture which is playing football. Nah, it’s not a big deal.”

Whether it’s a big deal or not, it will undoubtedly be a unique experience for many of these guys.

Prior to joining the Raiders, Perryman, Philon, and Teamer had never played for any other NFL team than the Chargers.

Hayward spent the first four years of his career in Green Bay before spending the past five years with the Chargers. While he did eventually face the Packers, it was four years after he left and he never took the field at Lambeau as part of the opposing team. So, this will be a new experience for him.

In practical purposes, there is a lot of familiarity with the players on the Chargers. Not only was Gus Bradley the DC for the Chargers the past four years, but several members of his staff were there with him including linebackers coach Richard Smith and defensive backs coach Ron Milus.

“Well, you have a good feel for the personnel,” Gus Bradley said of facing the Chargers.

But while there is some familiarity for Bradley with the Chargers personnel, there is also familiarity with the other direction, not only with the former Chargers on the Raiders’ defense but Bradley’s scheme. Something Bradley admits the Raiders must be aware of.

In that regard, the Chargers may have a bit of an advantage. There is new coaching staff there and with offensive coordinator Joe Lambardi not having held that position in five years, finding tape can be a challenge.

“We’re having a hard time with this one honestly because they have a new staff,” Jon Gruden said of preparing for the Chargers. “You end up watching more Ram tape than you do Charger tape. You end up watching New Orleans Saints tape to see where the origins of some of these plays are coming from. So, it will be a challenge for us. They’re a mystery. They are a very talented, well-coached team, but it will be a mystery. It will be a tough game for us.”

For those unfamiliar, new head coach Brandon Staley was the DC with the Rams last season and Lombardi spent the past five seasons as the QB coach in New Orleans.

Four of the five former Chargers defenders on the Raiders defense can lean on their experience last season facing Herbert in practice every day (Philon was out of football the past two seasons). Hayward in particular will see a couple of very familiar faces lining up across from him in Keenan Allen and Mike Williams.

This should be fun to watch.

Raiders head into Monday night as AFC’s only remaining undefeated team

Raiders head into Monday night as AFC’s only remaining undefeated team

Sunday started with four undefeated teams in the NFL. Two of which are in the AFC. Both of which are in the AFC West. It ended with just one — the Raiders. Though, to be fair, they haven’t played yet. They will have the chance to remain undefeated (4-0) on Monday Night Football against the division rival Chargers.

The Broncos were the other undefeated team and they were knocked from those ranks with a decisive 23-7 loss to the Ravens.

It was the Broncos who struck first with a touchdown pass from Teddy Bridgewater to tight end Noah Fant in the second quarter. From there, it was all Ravens.

The very next drive, the Ravens tied the game at 7-7. The Broncos punted on seven consecutive drives without even getting into Baltimore territory on any of those drives.

Three NFC teams came into the day undefeated, and one remains — the Arizona Cardinals.

Should the Raiders lose, they would not only drop from the ranks of the undefeated but drop out of first place in the AFC West. That title would then belong to the Chargers. So, Monday night is for the division lead. For the Raiders it’s for the conference lead.

Raiders, Chargers final injury report: LB Kenneth Murray carted off with ankle injury

Raiders, Chargers final injury report: LB Kenneth Murray carted off with ankle injury

Friday both the Raiders and Chargers looked like they were pretty healthy. Saturday that changed in what could be a big way for the Chargers with starting linebacker Kenneth Murray going down with an ankle injury.

Chargers head coach Brandon Staley said after practice that Murray rolled his ankle and will undergo an MRI to gage the severity.

Murray was listed officially as questionable for Monday’s game. As is CB Chris Harris Jr with a shoulder injury.

The Chargers also saw DL Justin Jones miss practice Saturday with a calf injury. He is officially ruled OUT for the game.

The only player on the Raiders injury report this week is Josh Jacobs. He is listed as questionable with his ankle injury.

Jacobs has missed the past two weeks with ankle and toe injuries. Head coach Jon Gruden said Jacobs will be a game time decision.

Should Jacobs not go, he would once again be replaced by Peyton Barber.

Raiders, Chargers injury report: CB Nate Hobbs, DT Solomon Thomas upgraded to full

Raiders are getting healthy. So are the Chargers

Thus far in the season, the Raiders have had some injury troubles. They’ve weathered it to start the season 3-0 and are starting to get healthy. The big return this week was Josh Jacobs. He has been limited the past couple days, but he’s practicing which is a step up from the past two weeks.

A few players got banged up in last week’s overtime win over the Dolphins, and two of them got an upgrade today.

CB Nate Hobbs (shoulder) was a full participant as was DT Solomon Thomas (knee). Both were limited in Thursday’s practice.

Others still limited included CB Trayvon Mullen (shoulder) and S Roderic Teamer (ankle).

The Chargers saw a new addition to the injury report, with long snapper Matt Overton suffering a calf injury. He was limited along with WR Keenan Allen (ankle), CB Chris Harris Jr, (shoulder) and DT Justin Jones (calf). They also had a couple upgrades with safeties Alohi Gilman (hip) and Derwin James (toe/shoulder) both practicing full.

Raiders, Chargers injury report: RB Josh Jacobs returns to practice

Raiders, Chargers injury report: RB Josh Jacobs returns to practice

For the first time since the Raiders season-opening win over the Ravens, Josh Jacobs took the field for the Raiders. The Pro Bowl running back has missed the past two weeks with ankle and toe injures. He was limited today in his return to the practice field.

Head coach Jon Gruden said at this point Josh Jacobs is considered questionable to play Monday night against the Chargers. He added that after the performance fill-in Peyton Barber had last Sunday against the Dolphins he wouldn’t hesitate to put him back in the primary running back role this week if Jacobs is unable to go.

Also limited for the Raiders were CB Nate Hobbs (shoulder), CB Trayvon Mullen (shoulder), S Roderic Teamer (ankle), and DL Solomon Thomas (knee). Teamer is practicing for the first time this season as the Raiders set to face his former team. Dallin Leavitt returned full after missing last week with a concussion.

No players were missing for either the Raiders or the Chargers.

Derek Carr calls Raiders visiting Chargers ‘another home game’

Derek Carr on Raiders visiting Chargers “You always looked at it as another home game and that was no disrespect, it’s just a fact.

This week is the Raiders annual trip to Southern California to face the Chargers. And thus it’s the annual home-away-from-home game with the Raiders visiting their old stomping grounds where they still have a large fan contingent.

When it was San Diego, plenty of Raiders fan holdovers from the old LA Raiders days would make the trip a couple hours south to see their team play. And a few seasons ago, the Chargers came to them. In the process alienating much of the Chargers fan base and moving closer to those Raiders fans who used to make up at least half the crowd for Chargers games. Now it’s overwhelmingly Raiders fans.

“In my past, before playing in SoFi last year with no fans, whether it was in Los Angeles at that soccer stadium or in Qualcomm in San Diego, it was another home game,” said Carr of traveling to face the Chargers. “You always looked at it as another home game and that was no disrespect, it’s just a fact. The way you practice, the way you meet, it felt like a home game. And I fully expect Raider Nation to take over the majority of the stadium again, they usually do in my time. Before I was here, that’s what everyone would talk about. CWood (Charles Woodson) would say ‘hey, when we go down there it’s another home game’ and I fully expect that this time.”

If this were a player for any other team, these would be bulletin board words. But there’s simply no way anyone can argue the facts here. As Carr said it’s no disrespect, it’s just a fact.

Chargers fans in San Diego were loyal to their home team. And against most any other team, it wouldn’t have been a major issue. That was more about the SoCal Raiders fans than it was Chargers fans. Now, since the Chargers stupidly moved in with the Rams in LA, it’s equal parts Raider Nation presence and Chargers fan apathy.

Attending the games in LA since the Chargers arrived has been…something. It would be sad if the Chargers hadn’t brought this on themselves. Leaving San Diego to go to a city where they aren’t even the second favorite NFL team.

The game day environment seems like it’s trying so hard to be taken seriously and it just comes off as cute. Like pat-on-the-head cute. While the stands fill up with Black jerseys with a smattering of blue. Making the job of the camera guy looking for Chargers fans to put on the Jumbotron a challenging one.

Jon Gruden ‘hopeful’ RB Josh Jacobs will practice this week for Raiders

Jon Gruden ‘hopeful’ RB Josh Jacobs will practice this week for Raiders

The past two weeks the Raiders have been without Josh Jacobs. The Pro Bowl running back started the opener with an injured toe and ankle and hasn’t taken the practice field since.

Despite missing a second consecutive week of practices, there was some hope he could be back in the short term this week when his injury was changed from toe/ankle to just an ankle injury. Some had wondered if perhaps he had turf toe, which is a lingering injury that either sends a player to injured reserve or negatively affects performance.

Jon Gruden took to the podium for his Monday press conference following the team’s OT win over the Dolphins and gave an update on Jacobs’s status.

“I met with Josh this morning and we’re going to see how he feels on the practice field this week,” Gruden said of Jacobs. “Not making any predictions, but we’re hopeful we can get him back on the grass at some point this week.”

Sunday the Raiders’ run game started out slow but picked up late and Peyton Barber finished with 111 yards on 23 carries. And the Raiders pulled out another win to go 3-0 on the season.

They prepare for a tough Chargers team this week and will have a long week to do it as the game will be on Monday night. The Raiders could certainly use their star running back for this one.

Why Los Angeles Chargers Will Win

The Raiders are banged up.

Everyone is this time of year, but with a short week, Las Vegas is particularly hosed with four starters – defensive backs Johnathan Abram and Damon Arnette, and end Clelin Ferrell and linebacker Nicholas Morrow – out. Throw in RB Josh Jacobs who’s playing, but is nowhere near 100%, and this is the wrong time to be reeling.

Vegas has lost three of the last four – with the only win coming against the Jets – for one major reason – turnovers. The Raiders have given it up ten times over the last three games, the running game hasn’t hit 100 yards in the last four weeks, and the defense is getting gouged, allowing 28 points or more in each of those four.

Why Las Vegas Raiders Will Win

The Charger offense has hit a bit of a wall.

It won against Atlanta last week, and Justin Herbert rebounded from the clunker against the Patriots in a 45-0 loss the week before, but scoring has been tough with 21 points or fewer in four of the last five games. The one outlier came against … the Jets.

What’s going right for the Raiders? The passing game has gone off. Derek Carr pulled out the win over the Jets, and the air show followed it up with a 345-yard day against the Colts. The Charger pass defense hasn’t been awful, but it’s hardly been a rock.

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

QB Derek Carr, Las Vegas
Really? You’re going to start Derek Carr in your playoffs? He has been one of the best fantasy quarterbacks over the last two weeks, and everything is there to do it again. He went well over 300 yards through the air in the last two games with five touchdowns, and he has a rushing touchdown in each of the last two games. The D is going to give up yards, the Raider running game isn’t going to be great – it’s all there for Carr to rock again.

What’s Going To Happen

The Chargers had the Raiders beaten in Week 9, but a game-winning touchdown pass just barely came out in a heartbreaking loss. This is the flip.

Last week was when the Chargers finally showed they could win a close game against an okay team, coming through against Atlanta even though things didn’t go all that well.

The LA D that forced three takeaways in two of the last three games will make the Raiders screw up, and the banged up Vegas defense will get ripped through.
