Northwestern OT Rashawn Slater would be the best-case scenario pick for Raiders at No. 17

Northwestern OT Rashawn Slater would be the best-case scenario pick for Raiders at No. 17

Heading into the 2021 NFL draft, the Raiders need to find a starter at right tackle. That shouldn’t be all that hard given the talent and depth of this class. But which player would be the best fit with Las Vegas? That might depend on who you ask.

In a recent article by Seth Galina of Pro Football Focus, he broke down the ideal selections for the Raiders at No. 17. Not surprisingly, Rashawn Slater of Northwestern finished at No. 1. Here is what he had to say about the offensive tackle prospect heading into the draft:

“Slater has been starting for Northwestern ever since he stepped on campus in 2017. He was one of the highest-graded true freshmen in the country at right tackle that season, posting a 75.0 overall mark. He finally switched to left tackle as a junior in 2019 and allowed just five total pressures — and no sacks — across 355 pass-blocking snaps.”

Slater doesn’t have elite height or length, but he is a dominating player. He not only held his own against Chase Young in 2019, but it was also a mismatch in Slater’s favor. He has the ability to play both tackle spots and has All-Pro upside at guard.

If the Raiders deem him to be a better player at guard, they could easily slide him to the left side and kick Denzeele Good over to right tackle. Slater is also versatile enough to play center in the NFL, which makes him all the more valuable.

If Mike Mayock and Jon Gruden are lucky enough to have Slater fall to them at No. 17, it’s hard to imagine a better pick. He’s clearly the second-best offensive linemen in the class with elite athleticism and position flexibility. Expect Slater to be selected high in this month’s draft.

Raiders shopping OT Trent Brown in trade as ‘jury is still out’ on return says Mike Mayock

Raiders shopping OT Trent Brown in trade as ‘jury is still out’ on return says Mike Mayock

With a cap hit of $14 million this season, and after missing 16 games in his two seasons with the Raiders, Brown was among those who were considered prime candidates for a cut or a trade. Whether he will be cut remains to be seen, but before that happens, the Raiders are going to try and get something in trade.

Shortly after this report, I hopped on a video conference call with Raider GM Mike Mayock who had this to say about his right tackle.

“Trents whole thing is when he’s healthy, in shape, and ready to go, he’s as dominant as any tackle in football. And he proved that early in the 2019 season. Since then it’s been kind of a roller coaster. So, really what he needs to do more than anything is get himself in the best shape of his life and come out ready to prove that he is a dominant tackle in the National Football League. And really that’s all it takes. If Trent gets in shape and stays committed, there’s not a better talent out there.”

It’s telling how much Mayock talks about Brown getting in shape. That’s an area you know Gruden has little patience. As for Mayock, he was non-committal on Brown returning next year, which would seem to confirm that they are doing their due diligence, including being open to trade offers.

“The jury is still out here,” Mayock said of Brown’s status for next season. “He’s under contract. And again, we believe in the talent of that player. There’d be nothing finer than to have Trent Brown at right tackle protecting Derek Carr next year, week one, but the jury’s out. We still have to make some decisions on our roster in general.”

With reports the Raiders have informed Gabe Jackson he will be released — saving the team $9.6 million against the cap, it shows they are willing to let go of high-priced players, even if they’re talented. They had reportedly attempted to trade Jackson last offseason, but his contract was clearly one that other teams were unwilling to take on.

REPORT: Raiders nearing deal with free-agent QB Marcus Mariota

REPORT: Raiders nearing deal with free-agent QB Marcus Mariota

The Las Vegas Raiders have found their backup quarterback. According to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network, the team is close to signing a deal with former No. 2 overall pick Marcus Mariota, who was benched in favor of Ryan Tannehill last season.

Raiders Wire writer Levi Damien named Mariota a possible fit earlier this month and that appears to be happening as the Raiders were searching for a high-end backup for Derek Carr. Mariota has started 61 games in his NFL career but is still just 26-years old.

It will be fascinating to see how Mariota fits in Jon Gruden’s West Coast offense, but his ability to use his legs has to be intriguing to the Raiders’ head coach. Mariota isn’t being signed to compete with Carr, but Mariota does offer some insurance if anything were to happen to the Raiders’ franchise passer.

We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
