UFC on ESPN+ 31 bonuses: Bobby Green’s brawl with Lando Vannata takes ‘Fight of the Night’

The Bobby Green-Lando Vannata rematch was just as good as the first time.

The first time [autotag]Bobby Green[/autotag] and [autotag]Lando Vannata[/autotag] threw down back at UFC 216, the duo went to a split draw in an exciting matchup that took home “Fight of the Night” honors.

On Saturday, Green (26-10-1 MMA, 7-5-1 UFC) and Vannata (11-5-2 MMA, 3-5-2 UFC) went at it again. This time, there was a winner, as Green took a unanimous decision in their lightweight bout on the main card of UFC on ESPN+ 31.

But there was a similarity to their first fight: It was another exciting affair, and it once again earned best of show honors. Green and Vannata took home “Fight of the Night” after the event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, with each competitor netting an extra $50,000.

The awards marked Vannata’s fifth career post-fight bonus and Green’s third.

[lawrence-related id=540612,540610]

The evening also featured a pair of noteworthy finishes, which earned two competitors “Performance of the Night” awards.

[autotag]Jennifer Maia[/autotag] made her case for a shot at flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko with her biggest career victory. In the evening’s co-main event, Maia (18-6-1 MMA, 3-2 UFC) submitted Joanne Calderwood with a first round armbar. That marked the former Invicta champion’s third win in her past four fights and her first career post-fight bonus.

The final award went to someone who is no stranger to post-fight bonuses. [autotag]Vicente Luque[/autotag] earned a second-round knockout of upstart Randy Brown in a welterweight fight for his second straight win. Luque (18-7-1 MMA, 11-3 UFC) , too, took home “Performance of the Night,” which is his sixth career bonus.

UFC on ESPN+ 31 results: Bobby Green beats Lando Vannata in rematch

The Bobby Green and Lando Vannata rematch lived up to the standard set by their first bout, and this time there was a winner.

The rematch between [autotag]Bobby Green[/autotag] and [autotag]Lando Vannata[/autotag] lived up to the “Fight of the Night” standard set by their first bout. However, this time there was a definitive winner.

Green (26-10-1 MMA, 7-5-1 UFC) connected with damaging shots in a toe-to-toe slugfest over three rounds, winning a unanimous decision against Vannata (11-5-2 MMA, 3-5-2 UFC) by scores of 30-26, 30-27 and 30-27 in a worthy encore to the original fight at UFC 216 in October 2016, which ended in a split draw.

The lightweight bout opened the UFC on ESPN+ 31 main card, which streamed on ESPN+ from UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Vannata came out of the gate looking strong. He walked Green down with punching combinations and connected with some stinging shots, one of which snapped Green’s head back. Vannata got a little overly eager, though, and walked into a hard straight punch from Green that dropped him with just over two minutes remaining. Vannata regained his composure and got the fight back into striking range, where he traded more hard punches with Green.

[lawrence-related id=540747,540680]

The frantic pace continued to start the second, with both men showing little regard for their own well being as they went after each other with more big strikes. Then for the first time, the action slowed a bit. The strikes came with slightly less frequency, and that gave Green and opening to land a takedown. He couldn’t do much with it before Vannata got back up, however, and they resumed striking over the final two minutes. Green kept his lands low, countering Vannata when he could, but also taking some shots in the process.

The fighters came out looking to put a statement on each other in the final round, and Green made the first big move. He stepped into the pocket for a wild exchange with Vannata, landing a devastating tight elbow to the face of Vannata that led to a knockdown. Vannata immediately went into survival mode, doing his best to endure the onslaught from Green. He made it through the fire, eventually scrambling back up to his feet with roughly three minutes left. Green stayed smart, picking his shots then shooting in for another takedown. He rode out position for a few seconds then the fight got back up tot he feet. They slugged it out for the final stretch, with Green landing the better shots to secure his win.

“I just paid off my house,” a thrilled Green said post-fight. “I’m two up now. We went to a draw, and I won this one, so I’m two up.”

The UFC returns home to Las Vegas with a pair of ranked middleweight contenders at the top of the bill, looking to catapult themselves toward the top of the division with a statement victory.

UFC on ESPN+ 31 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card airs on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, [autotag]Edmen Shahbazyan[/autotag] (11-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) is the clear favorite to defeat [autotag]Derek Brunson[/autotag] (20-7 MMA, 11-5 UFC), with 12 of our 14 editors, writers, videographers and radio hosts selecting the undefeated prospect to continue his surge up the middleweight division. He’s also the favorite with our readers, too, with 76 percent backing him to get the win.

In the co-main event, Scotland’s [autotag]Joanne Calderwood[/autotag] (14-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) received similar backing from our panel, with 12 of the MMA Junkie team picking “JoJo” to get the victory over [autotag]Jennifer Maia[/autotag] (17-6-1 MMA, 2-2 UFC).

Brazilian welterweight [autotag]Vicente Luque[/autotag] (18-7-1 MMA, 11-3 UFC) is the most popular fighter on the card with our voting readers, with a whopping 90 percent picking him to prevail in his main card clash against [autotag]Randy Brown[/autotag] (12-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC). Thirteen of our 14 panelists also sided with Luque in their staff picks.

A fascinating striking battle is in prospect as lightweights [autotag]Bobby Green[/autotag] (25-10-1 MMA, 6-5 UFC) and [autotag]Lando Vannata[/autotag] (10-4-2 MMA, 3-4-2 UFC) face off, and the vote is suitably split, with Vannata edging the fan poll with 53 percent of the vote. The pair also split our staff picks panel, too, with each man receiving seven votes each.

The middleweight main card opener offers an interesting clash, too, but the panel and the fans seem much more unified in their assessment, with 86 percent of readers, and 12 of our panelists, picking [autotag]Kevin Holland[/autotag] (17-5 MMA, 4-2 UFC) to take the victory over [autotag]Trevin Giles[/autotag] (12-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC).

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Shahbazyan (76 percent), Calderwood (72 percent), Luque (90 percent), Vannata (53 percent), and Holland (86 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

Lando Vannata sees Bobby Green as ‘more or less the same’ going into UFC on ESPN+ 31 rematch

Lando Vannata doesn’t see much change in Bobby Green as they prepare to rematch at UFC on ESPN+ 31.

[autotag]Lando Vannata[/autotag] doesn’t see much change in [autotag]Bobby Green[/autotag] as they prepare to rematch at UFC on ESPN+ 31. But he doesn’t think his opponent can claim the same.

Vannata (11-4-2 MMA, 3-4-2 UFC) and Green (25-10-1 MMA, 6-5-1 UFC) fought to a split draw at UFC 216 in October 2017. They both believe they won the fight, but can leave no doubt on Saturday’s card, which takes place at UFC Apex in Las Vegas and streams on ESPN+, when they have a lightweight rematch.

Both men have mixed results since the first encounter, but Vannata said he’s entering the second fight as a different – and better – product. He said he can’t say the same for Green.

“I feel like he’s got a very similar style to the first time we fought,” Vannata told reporters, including MMA Junkie, on Thursday at UFC on ESPN+ 31 virtual media day. “There’s some things he does differently, a few layers to this game. But I think all in all he’s more or less the same. I think I’ve changed styles since then. If you go back and watch my fights, even fight I fight a little bit differently depending on who the opponent is.”

In the immediate fallout of their first encounter, Vannata and Green both made arguments for winning. Vannata said he’s dissected the tape in the years since, and at this point he has no question he should’ve had his hand raised.

It would have happened, too, if not for Vannata’s own doing. He landed an illegal knee on Green that cost him a point, and ultimately a split decision win. This time around, he wants no controversy.

“I’m looking forward to setting a few things straight,” Vannata said. “I’m very excited. It’s so hard to judge when you’re in there fighting. It’s so hard to know what the scorecards are going to be, and I actually thought I lost the fight when I was out there. It was when I went back and watched the fight I was like, ‘I clearly won it.’ I thought after watching I 100 percent won.”

His desire to clear the air won’t force Vannata into doing anything foolish though, he said. He will take victory however he can get it, but Vannata thinks just being himself will produce a positive result.

“I don’t want to try to get caught up in trying to finish the guy,” Vannata said. “I don’t want to force anything. I’m going to go out there and just fight my fight.”

Bobby Green on Lando Vannata: ‘I don’t know why he would even sign’ for UFC on ESPN+ 31 rematch

There’s definitely a feeling of unfinished business for Bobby Green heading into UFC on ESPN+ 31.

[autotag]Bobby Green[/autotag] believes [autotag]Lando Vannata[/autotag] made a major misstep in accepting Saturday’s rematch at UFC on ESPN+ 31.

After fighting to a split draw at UFC 216 in October 2017, Green (25-10-1 MMA, 6-5-1 UFC) and Vannata (11-4-2 MMA, 3-4-2 UFC) are set to run it back in a lightweight bout on this weekend’s card, which takes place at UFC Apex in Las Vegas and streams on ESPN+.

Although the rematch came together on relatively short notice, Green said he’s infinitely more prepared. The bar wasn’t set particularly high, though, because the conditions around the first matchup, as Green described them, were far from ideal.

“It was my last fight (on my contract and), I had no coach,” Green told reporters, including MMA Junkie, on Thursday during UFC on ESPN+ 31 media day. “I had just found my coach, and he’ll tell you the story, too. I just walked into the gym and said, ‘Will you work with me for this fight?’ We just half-assed it. We worked together, and we just fought the kid like it was. We didn’t know anything about the kid, didn’t know how to prepare for the kid, and even I’m fighting him with two weeks now, but at least I know who the hell I’m dealing with now. Before we were just doing some random stuff. To be honest, I was out of shape, I didn’t come in the best me,and now we’re going to see who is all really in.”

Both men believe they have valid claims to a win in the first meeting at UFC 216. Vannata would’ve won a split decision had he not landed an illegal knee on Green in the first round that cost him one point.

Green said he knows what he did wrong leading up to that fight, and he still made it razor thin.

“I’m an honest person,” Green said. “I’ll be honest: I felt like he did some really good things in the first fight. He dropped me. My problem is I let him get off with a good shot in the wrong places too early. His pop was still good. So, it’s just not knowing too much about him. Really at the end of the day I feel like it was just the judges. I let them see whatever they see. I don’t judge the fights.”

It’s not his intention to discredit Vannata, he said, but Green thinks he can assess the situation sincerely. After doing so, his confidence is sky high. In fact, Green is somewhat surprised Vannata even agreed to the rematch.

“Look at this face and look at mine,” Green said. “He had a cut over his nose; he had a cut over his eye. I don’t even know why they signed the fight again to be honest. I wouldn’t want to look like that again. If you want to do that again to yourself, sure. Go ahead. … I’m going to press him so hard. I don’t know why he would even sign this fight. He thinks I’m going to come in here half-assed. I don’t know why he would even do that to himself again. I’m coming so hard, bro. I’m here to let him have it. I’m here to let him have it A to B. I’m sorry, if he’s still standing, I guarantee he won’t be standing by the third round. I’ll get him out by the third.”

Despite years passing since their first encounter, Green said there’s still something unsettling about his first clash with Vannata. He doesn’t like the feeling of unresolved business and wants to bring his history with Vannata to a definitive end.

“I never had a draw in my life,” Green said. “There’s a winner, and there’s a loser. We’ve got to go figure it out. There’s no time to play around. There’s no time to figure it out.”

Vannata on what he wants next

“I want to fight at least twice more (in 2020), preferably (against a) big name. That’s when I thrive. That’s what makes me happy and brings out the best in me – guys who have built a name for themselves and guys who I think are very good. Whoever the UFC decides is good with me – twice more this year and really establish myself in this division again.”
