3 things to know: Heroic shot from LeBron James clinches No. 7 seed for Lakers over Warriors in play-in game

After falling behind by 13 points in the first half, LeBron James led the Lakers past the Warriors for a comeback to seal the No. 7 seed.

After a dominant defensive half to open the game, the Golden State Warriors went into halftime with a 13 point lead over the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference play-in game. However, a nightmare third quarter featuring a flurry of turnovers opened the door for a Lakers’ comeback.

Just 15 seconds into the final frame, the Lakers tied the game to set up a memorable finish in a race to the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference. After Steph Curry and LeBron James traded back and forth haymakers down the stretch, it was the 17-year veteran who had the final word.

With the shot clock ticking away and the game tied at 100, James pulled up from way beyond the arc to drill a clutch deep 3-pointer with 60 seconds left in the contest. The Warriors had no answer, dropping the play-in battle to the Lakers, 103-100.

James finished the game with 22 points on 7-of-17 shooting with 11 rebounds and 10 assists in 34 minutes. Sixteen of James’ points came during the Lakers’ second-half comeback.

Curry led the Warriors with a game-high 37 points on 12-of-23 shooting from the field and 6-of-9 from beyond the arc. Curry added seven rebounds and three assists in 40 minutes. However, Curry was loose with the basketball, recording six turnovers against the Lakers.

Third Quarter

After building a first-half lead behind Draymond Green’s defense and a buzzer-beater from Curry, the Warriors looked on their way to the No. 7 seed. Yet, the Warriors’ lead began to unravel in the third quarter.

While James, Anthony Davis and Dennis Schroder combined for 22 points in the third, Golden State’s mistakes helped lead the way for a Lakers comeback.

With only five turnovers in the first half, the Warriors turned it over eight times in the third quarter alone. After the third quarter, the Warriors’ advantage was cut down to just two points.

Draymond Green

Although Green was quiet as a scorer, recording only two points on 0-of-5 shooting from the field, the three-time All-Star was all over the floor on the defensive side of the court.

Green made things difficult for Davis in the frontcourt, holding the All-Star forward to only five points on 2-of-12 shooting from the field in the first half.

The former Defensive Player of the Year finished the contest with three steals and three blocks in 41 minutes. Green tacked on nine rebounds and eight assists against the Lakers.

What’s Next

Following Wednesday’s contest, the Lakers will claim the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference, setting up a series with Chris Paul, Devin Booker and the Phoenix Suns. The Warriors will now shift to the final game of the Western Conference play-in game against the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday.

The winner between the Grizzlies and Warriors will clinch the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference. The No. 8 seed will open a series against the No. 1 seed Utah Jazz on Sunday. Friday’s contest between the Warriors and Grizzlies will be a rematch of the final game of the 2020-21 regular season.

Behind 46 points from Steph Curry, the Warriors cruised past the Grizzlies, 113-101.

Advice and prediction

While it’s hard to bet against a streaking Steph Curry, the Los Angeles Lakers could cause trouble for the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night. Despite winning six games in a row to close the season, the Warriros still struggle when it comes to keeping teams off the glass. With the Lakers featuring a frontline that has Anthony Davis and Andre Drummond, the Warriors will have to fight to limit the defending champ’s getting multiple attempts at the tum.

Along with a size advantage, the Lakers boast the league’s top defensive rating. The Lakers will likely unload a bevy of defensive combinations to slow down Curry, forcing the rest of Golden State’s cast to make plays. If Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins or Jordan Poole can’t answer the bell, the Lakers could run away with the play-in game.

Best Bet: Under 217.5

Prediction: Lakers 108, Warriors 98

Warriors vs. Lakers: 4 questions with LeBron Wire’s Sanjesh Singh to preview the play-in game

Before the Warriors meet the Lakers on Wednesday, Warriors Wire asked LeBron Wire’s Sanjesh Singh 4 questions to preview the play-in game.

On Wednesday, a battle between Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers will headline the NBA’s Western Conference play-in tournament. Cruising into the play-in game, the Warriors are riding a six-game winning streak to close the season behind a furious run from Steph Curry.

The seven-time All-Star guard has tallied 30 or more points in 21 of his last 24 games to secure the 2020-21 scoring title, averaging 32 points per contest on 48.3% shooting from the field. Before inking the No. 8 seed in the play-in game, Curry finished the season with a scorching 46 point performance against the Memphis Grizzlies

In a star-studded battle in Hollywood, Curry will stand across from long-time Golden State rival LeBron James. While the defending champs pose a serious threat to the Warriors’ run at the postseason, James, Anthony Davis and the Lakers are coming off a season riddled with injuries.

However, heading into the play-in game, the Lakers will likely boast a healthy rotation led by one of the association’s best duos.

Wednesday’s tilt at Staples Center has the potential to open another chapter in James and Curry’s storied saga.

To get a better look at the state of the Los Angeles Lakers, Warriors Wire linked with Sanjesh Singh of LeBron Wire for a four-pack of questions before the No. 7 seed play-in game.

A look at Steph Curry’s numbers against the Lakers during the 2020-21 regular season

Before the Warriors face the Lakers in the play-in tournament, Warriors Wire looked at Steph Curry’s numbers against L.A. from the 2002-21 regular season.

On Sunday, Steph Curry put an exclamation point on the end of the 2020-21 season with a fiery 46 point performance against the Memphis Grizzlies to seal the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference play-in tournament.

The seven-time All-Star guard notched 30 or more points in 21 of his last 24 games to earn the 2020-21 scoring title with 32 points per game on 48.2% shooting from the field.

Despite winning six consecutive games to end the season, Curry and the Warriors still have to go through the defending champs for a shot at the postseason. On Wednesday, the Warriors will meet the Los Angeles Lakers in the play-in tournament to decide the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference.

Despite scoring 30 or more points in 38 games over the course of the season, Curry recorded a high of 27 points in three contests against the Lakers in 2020-21. With a 1-2 record for the Warriors against the Lakers this season, including a pair of ugly blowouts, Curry averaged 23 points on 34.6% shooting from the field and 34.6% from deep in 30.1 minutes per contest.

To move past LeBron James, Anthony Davis and the Lakers on Wednesday, the Warriors will need to count on a charged performance from Curry in Hollywood. However, it won’t be easy with the Lakers boasting the league’s top defense.

Before Wednesday’s play-in contest, here is a look at Curry’s numbers in three games against the Lakers from the 2020-21 season.

3 things to know: Warriors have no answer for LeBron James and Montrezl Harrell in blowout loss to Lakers, 128-97

After coming out flat, the Golden State Warriors had no answers for LeBron James and the Lakers in the second leg of a back-to-back on Monday.

To snap a season-high four-game losing streak, the Golden State Warriors recorded one of their top performances of the season in an upset win over the Utah Jazz. After recording an impressive effort against the Jazz, the Warriors came out flat against the Los Angeles Lakers in the second leg of a back-to-back at Chase Center.

With little rhythm on offense paired with an off night on defense, the Lakers cruised past the Warriors in a dominant 128-97 victory in San Francisco.

Steph Curry tallied a team-high 27 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field with three boards, three steals and two assists in 36 minutes. However, it was not enough to slow down the defending champions.

While LeBron James notched a triple-double with 22 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds, Montrezl Harrell led the Lakers off the bench with 27 points on 11-of-14 from the floor.

Following their ugly loss to the Lakers, the Warriors will leave Chase Center for a three-game away swing. Before the Warriors head on the road, here are three things to know from the Golden State Warriors’ 128-97 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday.

Points in the paint

Despite starting center Marc Gasol sidelined due to health and safety protocols, the Lakers punished the Warriors inside the pain on Monday night. With Montrezl Harrell dominating the frontcourt, the Lakers recorded a whopping 68 points in the paint to only 40 from Golden State.

Along with scoring inside, the Lakers cleaned up on the glass, outrebounding the Warriors by 18.

While the Lakers thrived inside, Golden State’s frontcourt struggled. Kevon Looney failed to score a bucket and only recorded one rebound in 12 minutes. Although James Wiseman was able to score seven points and grab eight boards, the rookie big fouled out of the contest in 28 minutes.

Youth movement off the bench

As the Warriors try to find a consistent rotation with the second unit, Steve Kerr opted for a youth movement off the bench against the Lakers. Rookies James Wiseman and Nico Mannion paired with sophomores Jordan Poole and Eric Paschall to lead the Warriors in minutes off the bench against the Lakers.

Poole continued his impressive play since leaving the G League bubble, scoring in double figures again off the bench with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field in 21 minutes. Mannion also tallied double figures in scoring, recording 10 points in 19 minutes behind Steph Curry.

Rewriting the record books

With a simple dime to Kelly Oubre Jr. in the third quarter, Steph Curry added another Golden State Warriors record to his resume. Following the pass to Oubre Jr., Curry became the Golden State Warriors’ new all-time franchise leader in assists.

The seven-time All-Star passed Guy Rodgers with 4855 assists. Prior to Curry inking his name at the top of the leaderboard, Rodgers carried the title of assist leader for 55 years.

Curry is also the franchise leader in 3-pointers made and free-throw percentage.
