Titans’ Kyle Philips ‘was the best player’ on Day 1 of rookie minicamp

One Titans beat writer proclaimed fifth-round pick Kyle Philips was the best player on the field on Day 1 of rookie minicamp.

For the first time since being drafted, the Tennessee Titans’ 2022 NFL draft class took the practice field on Friday for Day 1 of rookie minicamp, and while one rookie receiver made headlines for all the wrong reasons, a different one was dubbed “the best player” on the field.

As first-round pick Treylon Burks looked gassed and struggled to stay on the field, fifth-round pick Kyle Philips gave a glimpse of why fans and media — including former NFL receiver and current analyst Steve Smith — alike are high on the UCLA product.

According to Paul Kuharsky, Philips looked just like he does on his college tape. John Glennon of Sports Illustrated also noted how good Philips’ route-running and footwork looked.

Ben Arthur of the Tennessean echoed Kuharsky’s sentiment, while also proclaiming Philips as the best player on the field on Day 1.

Emily Proud of WKRN said Philips looked “as advertised” and noted he “had a few great sideline catches” on passes thrown by Malik Willis.

Here are some more clips of Philips at work:

This is obviously a very small sample size and there is still a long way to go, but Philips got off to about as good a start as one could hope for. He and the rest of the Titans’ rookies will be back at work on Saturday afternoon.

Titans’ rookie minicamp Day 1: News, notes, video for 2022 draft picks

A look at some of the Titans’ 2022 NFL draft picks on Day 1 of rookie minicamp.

The Tennessee Titans had their first day of rookie minicamp on Friday, and the three-day event will continue on Saturday and culminate on Sunday.

Stealing the headlines from Day 1 was the performance (or lack thereof) of wide receiver and 2022 first-round pick, Treylon Burks.

According to multiple beat writers on the ground, Burks looked gassed and needed the aid of an inhaler. He exited early, came back for team drills, and then left once again shortly thereafter.

Not a great start by any stretch, but let’s not get crazy here. This is Day 1 of rookie minicamp and there’s a long way to go before we should start getting worried and thinking the worst.

Also of note, quarterback Malik Willis reacted to Ryan Tannehill’s comment about it not being his job to mentor the rookie.

Willis said Tannehill had him and the other rookies over his house and that “everything’s good.”

“Man, we chopped it up,” Willis said. “It was never anything negative. Ryan is a good dude. Like I said he had us over the house. Everything’s cool, man.”

Now, a look at all of the news, notes and video we could find pertaining to the Titans’ 2022 draft picks from Day 1 of rookie minicamp.

Titans agree to terms with 4 of 9 2022 NFL draft picks

The Titans have agreed to terms on rookie contracts with all but one of their Day 3 picks.

The Tennessee Titans have agreed to terms with four of their nine 2022 NFL draft picks, the team announced on Thursday.

Tennessee is inking all but one of their Day 3 picks, including fourth-round running back Hassan Haskins, fifth-round wide receiver Kyle Philips, sixth-round defensive back Theo Jackson and sixth-round linebacker Chance Campbell.

The financial terms of the rookie contracts were not disclosed, but each will be four-year deals. Of course, there is no fifth-year option for players drafted after the first round.

Still left to sign are first-round wide receiver Treylon Burks, second-round cornerback Roger McCreary, third-round offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere, third-round quarterback Malik Willis and fourth-round tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo.

Tennessee inking half of their rookie class comes right before all of their first-year players will attend rookie minicamp, which begins on Friday, May 13, and will run through Sunday, May 15.

The first two days will be open to the media, so we’ll get our first looks at Tennessee’s rookies, including the team’s undrafted free agent signings.

Tennessee’s offensive picks included wide receivers Treylon Burks and Kyle Philips, offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere, quarterback Malik Willis, running back Hassan Haskins and tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo.

On defense, the Titans added cornerback Roger McCreary, defensive back Theo Jackson, and linebacker Chance Campbell.

Titans reveal jersey numbers for draft picks, offseason acquisitions

On Friday, the Titans revealed the jersey numbers for their newest players, including the 2022 NFL draft picks.

On Friday, the Tennessee Titans revealed the uniform numbers for all members of the team’s 2022 NFL draft class, as well their offseason acquisitions via trade and free agency.

First-round pick and wide receiver, Treylon Burks, will wear No. 16, the same number that he wore at Arkansas.

Cody Hollister wore the number last season, but he is switching to the No. 8. Burks will become just the fifth player in team history to wear the number, with Matt Cassel perhaps the most notable to previously wear it.

You’ll need to modify your Billy Volek jerseys with some duct tape and a sharpie. Titans third-round pick and quarterback Malik Willis will wear the No. 7 this year.

Oddly enough, he’ll become the seventh player in franchise history to wear the number, with other notable quarterbacks in Zach Mettenberger and Blaine Gabbert having worn it.

With Julio Jones departing, Robert Woods will wear No. 2 for the 2022 season. After the NFL approved a new rule allowing skill players to wear single-digit numbers, Woods changed his digit from 17 to 2 last season.

He will become just the third player in franchise history to wear No. 2, with the late Rob Bironas also wearing it for nine seasons in Nashville.

Here’s a look at all the uniform numbers for Tennessee’s newest players. Also included are players who decided to change their numbers from last season.

Titans WR Kyle Philips prides himself on route-running

“It’s something that I’ve been working on since I was in about eighth grade,” Philips said of his route-running.

Desperate for a slot receiver, the Tennessee Titans selected UCLA’s Kyle Philips with the 163rd overall pick in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL draft. The San Marcos, CA native, who admitted that he had never been to Nashville, finished fourth all-time in career receptions in school history.

“I couldn’t be more happy. Once I got that call, I just started crying right away. I thought I was going to be able to hold it back, but I couldn’t do it. I was just extremely thankful,” he said to reporters after being selected.

“Just all the hard work, and the Titans just believing in me, giving me the opportunity to go live out my dreams and play in the NFL.”

Philips played in 373 of UCLA’s pass plays last season, but only 17 of those came lined up out wide (Pro Football Focus). He’s not the fastest guy, or the tallest; at the NFL Combine, he was listed at 5-foot-11, 189 pounds, and ran the 40-yard dash in 4.58 seconds.

He noted that he didn’t have his best performance at the combine, but his play on film jumps off the page. When asked how he describes his game, he had just one word:

“Reliable. I’m a guy that whatever the coaches need, I can go get it done. If he needs someone to block, I’ll go block that guy… Just a reliable guy that puts the team first and willing to do whatever I need to help the team win.”

Philips indicated that NFL receivers Cole Beasley, Hunter Renfrow, Davante Adams, and Keenan Allen are players he models his game after.

Specifically, Philips has taken Allen’s patented skip step to freeze defensive backs and Adams’ split release to create separation, and incorporated them into his own game.

As such, the UCLA product’s route-running is something he takes a lot of pride in.

“It’s the main thing as a receiver, being able to create separation,” he said. “It’s something that I’ve been working on since I was in about eighth grade. It takes a lot of film study just watching guys, how they run routes, and learning from them and adding to your toolkit.”

Former Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith said that Philips has a “PhD in route-running,” and that the rookie “is fresh out of medical school because he’s doing surgery on DBs.”

Aside from his abilities on the offensive side of the ball, Philips averaged 22.6 yards per punt return last year. He also returned one 82 yards in the game against Colorado.

The Titans are no stranger to finding gems in the later rounds of the draft. Philips will look to join that exclusive group, with rookie minicamp opening up on May 13.

Steve Smith is a big fan of Titans WR Kyle Philips

Former NFL wide receiver Steve Smith is a big fan of Titans fifth-round pick and WR, Kyle Philips.

Tennessee Titans fifth-round pick and wide receiver, Kyle Philips, just received a big endorsement from former NFL wideout, Steve Smith.

One of the best traits Philips brings with him to the NFL is his route-running ability, something we discussed in our instant analysis of the Titans’ fifth-round pick.

Smith minced no words when talking about Philips’ route-running, even going as far as to say the rookie, who he picked as his favorite mid-round receiver, has “a PhD in route-running.”

“A guy I have is Kyle Philips out of UCLA,” Smith revealed. “I don’t know if you know, but he is fresh out of medical school because he’s doing surgery on DBs. That young man has a PhD in route-running. He can play in the slot… And I just believe with what they have already, he can go to work. They fill a void; he’s not a big guy — he’s 5’11 — he’s not a real fast guy — he’s 4.5 — but he’s a route technician, and you know what that spells? Trouble. They already have a running game, so the play action with a PhD in route-running, I can see this young man making an impact immediately, and also obviously playing on special teams as well.”

Fellow former NFL receiver, James Jones, concurred with Smith’s assessment.

“I like it, Steve. I really like it. Just watching him on film, you’re right, he can run routes. He’s putting people in blenders out there.”

The Titans can only hope Philips is as good as Smith thinks he can be.

As things stand now with Tennessee’s wide-open receiving corps., the UCLA product will have a good chance to not only make the roster, but to see significant snaps in his first season.

Tennessee Titans WR Kyle Philips: 4 things to know

Kyle Philips says his girlfriend, who is a big fan of Nashville, was hoping he’d get drafted by the Titans before it happened.

The Tennessee Titans made their second wide receiver selection in the 2022 NFL draft when they picked UCLA wide receiver Kyle Philips in the fifth round (No. 163 overall).

Along with Philips, the Titans also drafted wideout Treylon Burks in the first round, which kicked off the team’s revamping of its receiving corps in the wake of trading star wide receiver A.J. Brown to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Here are four things to know about Philips, whose girlfriend is a huge fan of the city of Nashville.

What Titans’ Day 3 picks said after being drafted

A look at everything the Titans’ Day 3 picks had to say after being drafted.

The Tennessee Titans concluded their 2022 NFL draft on Day 3 after taking a total of five players from between Rounds 4 and 6. Of course, the Titans didn’t have a seventh-round pick this year.

In the first two days of the draft, the Titans selected wide receiver Treylon Burks, cornerback Roger McCreary, offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere, and quarterback Malik Willis.

On Day 3, the Titans picked running back Hassan Haskins, tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo, wide receiver Kyle Philips, defensive back Theo Jackson and linebacker Chance Campbell.

After being selected by Tennessee on the final day of the draft, each of the players met with the media. Here’s what they had to say:

Meet the Tennessee Titans’ 2022 NFL draft class

Meet the Tennessee Titans’ 2022 NFL draft class.

After making their two picks in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft, the Tennessee Titans are officially done for this year’s event. Now, the team’s attention will turn to undrafted free agent signings.

Tennessee went into the draft with a slew of needs on offense, and it showed with the team taking a total of six offensive players. However, the Titans didn’t neglect defense, taking three players on that side of the ball.

The nine picks in total were the most the Titans have made in a draft since 2017, when they tallied the same number.

To say this year’s draft was a roller coaster would be an understatement.

To kick things off, Tennessee traded one of their best players, wide receiver A.J. Brown, to the Philadelphia Eagles, which was a surprise to say the least.

Then, after taking Brown’s replacement in Treylon Burks, the Titans landed their quarterback of the future in Malik Willis two rounds later, a selection that injected some much-needed excitement into the team’s fan base after a rough first night.

Now, here’s a look at the Titans’ entire haul from the 2022 NFL draft, along with all of the articles we wrote on each of them.
