Cardinals’ Krys Barnes not fined for hit on Jordan Love; 2 other Cardinals are fined

Krys Barnes was penalized for a late hit on Jordan Love. He was not fined for it.

Arizona Cardinals linebacker Krys Barnes believed he would receive a letter this week from the NFL this week informing him about a fine for unnecessary roughness. That wasn’t the case.

In the fourth quarter, at the end of a six-yard run by Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love in which he went into a slide, Barnes was trying to jump over Love, but his hand made contact with Love’s helmet mostly because Love’s upper body raised slightly off the ground.

Barnes and Love were teammates on the Packers for three seasons from 2020 through 2022.

Earlier this week, Barnes said, “It was nothing malicious. I was really trying to get over him sliding into my legs. I said a few words to him when he stood up and he said a few words to me after that little hit. It’s still all love between us. He knows (there was) nothing malicious on my part. Hopefully, when this fine letter comes, he takes care of it, but that will be a different conversation. There was no ill will.”

Barnes told Cards Wire on Friday that he hadn’t received a fine letter, which appeared to be good news because players usually receive those earlier in the week.

It was confirmed there was no fine when the NFL announced them for 24 players on Saturday.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t the outcome for running back DeeJay Dallas and safety Joey Blount, who were fined.

Dallas was fined $11,102 for a controversial horse-collar tackle of Jayden Reed on a punt return in the second quarter that wiped out a fumble recovery. Blount was fined $5,472 for a first-quarter facemask penalty, also on a punt return.

Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander was fined $11,255 for a facemask penalty in the second quarter on a four-yard run by quarterback Kyler Murray. Alexander was covering wide receiver Michael Wilson on the opposite of the field.

Dallas wasn’t happy about the fine, and told CardsWire he is appealing. On the play, it appeared Dallas did not have his hand inside Reed’s collar and he said the league told him it was still a penalty for pulling down on Reed’s jersey.

While many believe a hand has to be inside the collar, the rule confirms the league’s interpretation. Sorry, DeeJay.

It says, “No player shall grab the inside collar of the back or the side of the shoulder pads or jersey, or grab the jersey at the name plate or above, and pull the runner toward the ground. This does not apply to a runner who is in the tackle box or to a quarterback who is in the pocket.

“Note: It is not necessary for a player to pull the runner completely to the ground in order for the act to be illegal. If his knees are buckled by the action, it is a foul, even if the runner is not pulled completely to the ground.”

Watching the replay, it does appear that Dallas grabbed the jersey at the name and that Reed’s knees did slightly buckle. It wasn’t egregious, which might mean an appeal could result in a reduction of the fine amount.

Cardinals announce return of LB Krys Barnes

Barnes agrees to a one-year deal to return to the Cardinals after signing a one-year deal last offseason.

The start of NFL free agency had the Arizona Cardinals quite busy. They added four likely defensive starters in the free agent market. They also started getting some of their own free agents under contract.

The team announced Monday afternoon that linebacker Krys Barnes has agreed to return to the team on a one-year contract.

Barnes signed a one-year deal last offseason and played in 16 games, starting six. He had 55 total tackles, including three for loss, a quarterback hit, an interception and six pass breakups.

He logged 408 defensive snaps and a career-high 209 special teams snaps.

He will likely compete with Mack Wilson, one of the Cardinals’ latest free agent additions, for a starting role.

Cardinals suffer 2 more defensive injuries in Week 3

Zaven Collins left the game after getting poked in the eye. Krys Barnes exited with a hand injury.

The Arizona Cardinals have had to suffer more than their fair share of injuries on their defense. On Sunday, two more defenders got hurt.

Linebacker Zaven Collins got poked in the eye and had to leave the game. Linebacker Krys Barnes, already in the starting lineup because of an injury to Josh Woods, left the game with a hand injury.

We will see if either injury causes them to miss any practice time and put their availability in Week 4 at risk.

Woods has missed the last two games with an ankle injury. Starting nose tackle Leki Fotu missed Week 2 with a shoulder injury. Defensive linemen L.J. Collier and Carlos Watkins both are on injured reserve for biceps injuries that required surgery. Neither is likely to return this season.

Safety Budda Baker is on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.

The Cardinals’ depth was questionable to begin with. They can hardly afford to sustain any more injuries.

LBs Josh Woods, Krys Barnes switch uniform numbers before season opener

Josh Woods was No. 51 and is now No. 10. Krys Barnes was No. 56 and now has No. 51.

Arizona Cardinals linebackers Josh Woods and Krys Barnes debuted number jersey numbers in Week 1.

All through the offseason, training camp and the preseason, Woods wore No. 51 and Barnes No. 56. Both signed with the Cardinals as free agents in the offseason.

With the start of the season, they changed things up.

Woods now wears No. 10, a number previously worn by receiver Davion Davis in the preseason. Davis was not re-signed to the practice squad following his release.

Barnes took Woods’ No. 51.

Woods previously had worn No. 55 and No. 51 in his previous NFL stops with the Bears and Lions.

Barnes had worn No. 51 for his entire career.

POLL: Grade Cardinals’ signing of LB Krys Barnes

Vote in the poll to tell us what you think of the addition of LB Krys Barnes.

The Arizona Cardinals added depth to the linebacker room with the signing of former Green Bay Packer Krys Barnes. He signed a one-year deal worth a total of less than $1.04 million.

He gets the league minimum in salary and a small $25,000 signing bonus.

He was a starter for the first two years he was in the league with the Packers and had at least 80 tackles in both 2020 and 2021.

An ankle injury limited him to only six games in 2022.

He also played 230 special teams snaps for the packers over three seasons.

Based on his salary, he is not guaranteed a spot on the roster and he isn’t likely to start, but he does add experience to the bench should someone get hurt.

He comes at a low price.

What grade do the Cardinals deserve for this signing?
