How the Kristaps Porzingis trade can make Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown better

“Porzingis will definitely add an element to the offense,” explained Gary Washburn.

The Boston Celtics’ decision to swap Marcus Smart for Kristaps Porzingis may have been a painful one for fans to deal with, but it is also a trade that could have many positive effects on the Celtics’ quest for a title.

That was the topic of a recent episode of the CLNS Media “A-List” podcast. Hosts A. Sherrod Blakeley, Gary Washburn and Kwani A. Lunis reflect on how the deal might make Boston better.

“Porzingis will definitely add an element to the offense,” Washburn said. “He’ll stretch the floor, make things easier on Jayson (Tatum) and Jaylen (Brown).”

“He’s a post-up guy, too. He can shoot over anybody. He’s a good midrange shooter and that’s what they need … so I think he’ll fit.”

Add Kendrick Perkins’ name to the list of those nonplussed about the Marcus Smart trade

Perkins has a unique perspective on Marcus Smart being sent to the Memphis Grizzlies.

If anyone knows how breaking up the core of a title team can go sideways for a franchise, it is former Boston Celtics big man Kendrick Perkins.

Dealt away from Boston after a knee injury ended his season (and tenure) with the Celtics in 2011, Perkins has a unique perspective on Marcus Smart being sent to the Memphis Grizzlies for Washington Wizards big man Kristaps Porzingis.

Perkins expresses frustration over the Celtics trading Smart to the Grizzlies, emphasizing Smart’s value to the team. He questions the sudden hype around  Porzingis vs. Smart’s proven contributions to the team when it has mattered most in the postseason.

Check out the clip embedded below to get the broadcaster’s point of view about how the Smart deal might end up going sideways shared on a recent episode of ESPN’s “NBA Today.”

Where might the Boston Celtics trade Malcolm Brogdon?

While the Celtics might retain his services, there’s a case to be made to move him after the trade to L.A. fell apart.

There has been some disappointment and frustration among fans over the trade that sent Marcus Smart from the Boston Celtics for Kristaps Porzingis given Smart’s role as the heart and soul of the Celtics.

Despite the fact the trade brought good value in terms of the assets received, some still find it difficult to accept. That’s due in part to the unexpected nature of the trade. The fact another deal involving Malcolm Brogdon fell through added to the disappointment.

To talk over the fallout of the trade as well as what it can bring to Boston’s capabilities, the hosts of the “How About Those Celtics?” podcast talked over the momentous news.

They express their admiration for Smart as both a player and a person, praising his skills on the court and his contributions to the community, and spend a fair amount of time floating potential trade destinations for Malcolm Brogdon as well.

To hear what they had to say about one of the biggest moves made by the ball club in many years, take a look at the clip embedded above.

Bob Ryan is not a fan of the Boston Celtics’ Kristaps Porzingis trade

Ryan remains open-minded about the future of the team in its new form, declaring he will wait and see how it goes.

The Boston Celtics‘ controversial decision to trade Marcus Smart for Kristaps Porzingis isn’t sitting well with everyone. Renowned Boston sports columnist Bob Ryan, among them, does not mince his words as he shares his own candid take on the trade on a recent episode of the CLNS Media “Ryan, Goodman and Tanguay” podcast, particularly in relation to Porzingis.

Ryan kicks off the discussion with a blunt statement, saying, “I’m not crazy about this … I’m not a big fan of this guy … the last thing that I needed in my Celtic life was another guy cranking up stupid 3s and that’s what they want.”

Despite his critique, Ryan remains open-minded about the future of the team in its new form, declaring he will wait and see how it goes.

To hear for yourself Ryan’s opinion on the deal, take a look at the clip embedded above.

Why the Boston Celtics’ trade for Kristaps Porzingis might be genius

This Porzigis trade might just be exactly what the Celtics need.

The Boston Celtics’ three-team trade for Kristaps Porzingis has generated mixed reactions among fans of the Celtics. The Washington Wizards traded Porzingis to avoid losing him for nothing in free agency and received expiring contracts and draft picks in return.

The Grizzlies were pleased with the trade as they acquired Marcus Smart to bolster their defense and run the point while Ja Morant serves out his 25-game suspension. Boston fans are upset about losing Smart but many believe Porzingis can improve their frontcourt depth. Porzingis’ post-passing abilities and offensive versatility are valuable additions to the Celtics’ roster.

However, concerns about Porzingis’ health and Boston’s need for further roster improvements remain.

To hear a more detailed breakdown on how this Porzigis trade might just be exactly what the Celtics need, check out the clip embedded above put together by the folks behind the Alex Hoops YouTube channel.

Bob Ryan and Jeff Goodman break down the Marcus Smart – Kristaps Porzingis trade

Marcus Smart, a Celtics mainstay, is now a member of the Memphis Grizzlies after nearly a decade with the Celtics, and not everyone is all too happy about that new reality.

The Boston Celtics have acquired Washington Wizards big man Kristaps Porzingis, along with the No. 25 pick in the 2023 NBA draft (since traded away in order to trade back for Arkansas forward prospect Jordan Walsh and four second round draft picks) and a top-4 protected first-round pick in 2024 from the Golden State Warriors.

As a result, Marcus Smart, a Celtics mainstay, is now a member of the Memphis Grizzlies after nearly a decade with the Celtics, and not everyone is all too happy about that new reality even in light of what Porzingis brings to the team at a position of need for the ball club.

The eponymous hosts of the CLNS Media “Bob Ryan with Jeff Goodman and Gary Tanguay” podcast let it be known where they stand on the deal in a recent episode.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear their points of view on the trade.

Report: Boston Celtics expected to extend Kristaps Porzingis after trade

The Latvian center is currently in the last year of his last contract after opting into his player option.

One of the lingering concerns of the three-team trade that sent Marcus Smart from the Boston Celtics to the Memphis Grizzlies for Washington Wizards big man Kristaps Porzingis has been the fact that the Latvian center is currently in the last year of his last contract after opting into his player option. But new reporting from Substack’s Marc Stein suggests that worry may soon be addressed by Boston.

“The Celtics,” reports Stein, “are strongly expected to tack two years onto Porzingis’ contract this summer. The 27-year-old is eligible for a maximum two-year extension worth $77 million that could take his total compensation in green well past $100 million.”

“Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens backed up that idea Friday at his first post-trade media availability when he said ‘we hope so’ when asked about extending Porziņģis’ contract beyond next season,” added the Substack journalist.

Could the Kristaps Porzingis trade be a big mistake for the Boston Celtics?

Porzingis is seen in some corners for his past health concerns, inconsistent performance, and limited contributions to winning.

The Boston Celtics acquired Kristaps Porzingis in a three-team trade that involved the Memphis Grizzlies and the Washington Wizards. Marcus Smart was traded to the Grizzlies, and the Celtics also sent a draft pick to complete the deal. The trade ostensibly aims to help the Celtics amplify the offensive capabilities of star forwards Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, while also augmenting the team’s rim-protecting capabilities inside.

Porzingis is seen in some corners for his past health concerns, inconsistent performance, and limited contributions to winning, which has some nervous to outright against the swap for Boston’s needs as a title contender.

One such detractor of the trade was the eponymous host of the Fox Sports “Ben Maller” show, who recently made his case for why the Celtics made a mistake by swapping Smart for Porzingis.

Check out the clip embedded above to hear why he believes this to be true.

Stein: Boston Celtics were Kristaps Porzingis’ preferred team, threat of Jazz as FA destination sealed deal

“The threat of losing Porziņģis without compensation appears to have been sufficiently credible,” wrote Stein.

It seems that Kristaps Porzingis may have helped steer himself to the Boston Celtics by using the threat of signing with the Utah Jazz in free agency to do so according to new reporting from Substack’s Marc Stein. Per Stein, “multiple rival teams … were convinced Porziņģis, had he not landed with the Celtics, was poised to receive strong free agent interest from Utah had he elected to decline his $36 million player option”.

“The threat of losing Porziņģis without compensation appears to have been sufficiently credible to add some momentum to the Wizards’ determination to finalize a trade agreement,” added the Substack NBA reporter.

“Did the Jazz actually have a place for Porziņģis alongside Markkanen and Kessler?” pondered Stein.

“The 7-foot-3 Latvian won’t have to test those limits now that a deal to his preferred destination — Boston — came together.”
