Todd Golden lands first transfer commitment as Florida’s head coach

Todd Golden got his guy. Welcome to the Swamp, Will Richard!

Former Belmont guard [autotag]Will Richard[/autotag] announced his commitment to the Florida Gators on Saturday.

Richard becomes the first player to commit to new head coach [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag] after picking the Gators over Clemson, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest. As a freshman, Richard started 30 of 33 games averaging 12.1 points and 6 rebounds per game. His best scoring performance (22 points) came in an NIT loss to Vanderbilt.

The 6-foot-5-inch, 195-pounder entered the portal on March 22 and Golden immediately got to work. The two spoke daily until Richard finally made it to campus on April 7, and the decision came shortly after that trip.

Richard’s commitment comes on the heels of [autotag]Tyree Appleby[/autotag]’s decision to transfer from UF for his final year of eligibility. [autotag]Tuongthach Gatkek[/autotag] also hit the portal and [autotag]Anthony Duruji[/autotag] declared for the NBA draft. Golden is still working on getting [autotag]Colin Castelton[/autotag] to return, but Florida needs help from the transfer portal to turn things around.

Landing Richards is a good start. He’s one of the more productive names in the portal and figures to be the primary ball-handler for the Gators next season. Pairing him with [autotag]Kowacie Reeves[/autotag] would give Golden a talented duo in the backcourt to work with.

Florida basketball signee Kowacie Reeves’ reputation among analysts is growing big time. The shooting guard from Macon, Ga., is now a five-star recruit and the No. 25 overall player in the 2021 recruiting class, according to Rivals.

Reeves has seen his stock skyrocket since committing to the Gators on April 30. Two years ago, he didn’t even appear on the Rivals150. Now, he’s considered one of the best prospects in the entire class.

At 6-feet-6-inches, 180 pounds, Reeves is the ideal size for a wing shooter. His length and athleticism are major factors of his game, and he’s got elite shooting ability.

A sought-after recruit with 14 other offers (including one from conference rival Tennessee), Reeves locked in his decision to play for the Gators by signing his National Letter of Intent on Nov. 11.

He should be a candidate to immediately start in Gainesville, as this is a Florida team desperate for a high-caliber offensive player with Reeves’ frame.

He may be the only player in the Gators’ 2021 class at the moment, but he’s one who should be very impactful.

Four-star recruit Kowacie Reeves signs with Florida Gators

The talented shooting guard, who committed to Florida in April, announced on Wednesday that he’s going to play basketball for the Gators.

Shooting guard Kowacie Reeves has committed to play basketball for the Florida Gators, which he announced via Twitter on Wednesday. The news comes as little surprise, the four-star recruit from Westside High School in Macon, Ga., has been expected to sign with Florida throughout the recruiting process.

Reeves was a popular target for a number of high-end schools, a list that included official offers from Texas and Virginia. Both programs were higher on CBS Sports’ preseason college basketball rankings than the Gators, who landed the 21st spot.

His skillset is anchored by his shooting ability, which was heavily praised by Jerry Meyer, the Director of Basketball Scouting at 247Sports.

“Possesses nice length and athleticism for a wing shooter. Top notch shooter with a quick release. Shoots well off catch and dribble. Fits the mold of valued shooters with length and athleticism.”

There are some areas of development still needed in Reeves’ game. With only 170 pounds on his 6-foot-6-inch frame, Reeves doesn’t bring much power to the court just yet. That impacts his rebounding ability, as he loses fights for the ball to more well-built players, but he still has plenty of time to develop more physicality.

Reeves, who was interviewed on the Luke Winstel Show in June, says all the right things. He’s eager to be a Gator, he’s eager to improve his game, and he is eager to prove he can make it happen.
