The Cleveland Cavaliers have converted the contract of center Moses Brown to a standard NBA contract. In a related move, the team signed guard RJ Nembhard to a two-way contract, Cavaliers President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman announced today from Cleveland Clinic Courts. Brown (7-2, 245) signed his first 10-day contract with Cleveland on March 10, his second 10-day contract on March 21 and a two-way contract on March 31. He has appeared in 13 games (five starts) for the Cavaliers, averaging 6.3 points and 5.5 rebounds in 12.8 minutes.

“I think Koby and those guys have done an unbelievable job drafting and making trades,” James said. “I think big fella (Allen), that acquisition was amazing for them to make that trade. Obviously Darius Garland is a big-time player. And I think the role that Kevin (Love) is playing right now has kind of uplifted those young guys, seeing a veteran that could sacrifice, a champion that’s won a championship, all the things that he’s done, to come off the bench and play this role. I am not surprised by anything that they’re doing right now.”

Love came into camp in September in good condition — which was in some doubt after he left Team USA training in July after struggling to get into shape. With limited depth on the wing, Bickerstaff made the decision to put Markkanen in the starting lineup at small forward so Love would have more room to play. “I thought we had a tremendous offseason by getting Evan, Lauri and Rubio,” Altman says. “We had [a] process and ping pong balls. But I really liked our top seven to eight guys and I knew we were going to take a step forward.”

More on this storyline

Barry Jackson: If Heat loses bidding war for Lowry & doesn’t get Dinwiddie or Ball (or Paul,Conley obviously), there is Sexton interest. But Heat likely wouldn’t have enough to appeal to Cleveland unless Love included&Heat; would then be up against tax in 22-23. Cavs said to want lot if deal him -via Twitter @flasportsbuzz / July 30, 2021
One question outside of a likely Mobley pick is what else they might have in store for themselves. Rumors of Collin Sexton trades are swirling. Exploring better-balanced books in the future is happening. And even kicking around a potential Ben Simmons trade for Cleveland has been discussed, as it has with many teams. League sources said brief conversations between Cleveland and Philadelphia were explored, but an asking price of every young player the Cavs value plus multiple first-round picks in the future wasn’t something they’d consider. For now, roll with Mobley and see where else value may exist. -via The Athletic / July 29, 2021

Dan Gilbert wants Cavs as playoff threat next season

Obviously this seems like such a perfect outcome for the Cavaliers. According to league sources, team owner Dan Gilbert has made it clear to general manager Koby Altman and his staff that he wants the Cavaliers acting as a playoff threat next season. Adding Simmons to the mix would instantly do that. But, the thing is, Simmons isn’t going to come to Cleveland in any form of a trade. Sure, the base of Cleveland’s offer is impressive, and can get better if they add more to it, but if the Sixers really wanted to entertain a trade for Simmons, there are plenty of better offers out there.
