LSU women’s team makes quick work of Alcorn State

LSU didn’t waste time putting this game away.

The LSU Tigers women’s basketball team scored a season-high in points on Wednesday night. The No.22 ranked Tigers beat Alcorn State 100-36 to improve to 8-1 on the season.

Khayla Pointer led LSU; she scored 19 points, shooting 7-10 from the field. In addition, Pointer hit 2-4 three-point shots while also grabbing ten rebounds. Alexis Morris added on 7-9 shooting from the field. All 13 LSU players scored in the game on Wednesday night.

LSU shot 61.3% from the field and 37.5% from beyond the arc. They also won the rebounding battle 46-21. Alcorn State turned the ball over 26 times in the game.

Maya Claytor led Alcorn State in scoring with 13 points. However, this game was over quickly; Alcorn State only scored double-digit points in one of the four quarters.

The Tigers are playing good basketball, looking much improved, but let’s see what happens when conference play starts and games get a little more challenging down the road.

LSU was supposed to play the University of New Orleans Saturday, but the game was canceled due to health and safety protocols. So instead, the Tigers will play Bradley at noon CT Saturday at the Pete Maravich Center in Baton Rouge. Bradley is 3-4, and LSU will look to improve to 9-1 on the season with a win Saturday.

Kim Mulkey, LSU women’s basketball coast to another win

LSU women’s basketball keep it rolling on Sunday.

On Sunday afternoon, the LSU Tigers took on the Texas Southern Tigers. LSU dominated Texas Southern 96 to 55. The win improves the Lady Tigers record to 7-1. Texas Southern was only down by two at the end of the first quarter, but it was all downhill from the second quarter on.

LSU outscored Texas Southern 31 to 8 in the second quarter and never looked back. The Tigers used strong defense in rebounding in the blowout win. LSU held Texas Southern to 33.8% shooting from the field and outrebounded them 48-20.

Faustine Alfuwa led the Tigers in scoring with 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field. She also added five rebounds. LSU’s leading scorer added 13 points, six rebounds, five-assist, and five steals. Alexis Morris pitched in with 11 points.

The Lady Tigers bench pitched in with 48 points, Hannah Gusters and Timia Ware led the way with nine points apiece. LSU moved the ball well and shot 62% from the field while dishing out 26 assists.

Texas Southern leading scorer Shalexxus Aaron scored 11 points, while Jala Buster led the Tigers with 13 points. Texas Southern had tough time scoring due to tough defense, but Texas Southern also shot 6-23 on layups.

Up next for LSU will be a home against Alcorn State on Wednesday at 7:00 pm ET.

The LSU Lady Tigers’ last time out they beat No.14 Iowa State 69-90. The Lady Tigers are now ranked No.24 in the country. They are now 6-1 on the young season. Up next for LSU are the winless Texas Southern Lady Tigers.

So far this season, LSU is averaging 72.6 points per on 44.7% shooting from the field. Under new head coach Kim Mulkey, LSU scores more efficiently by pushing the tempo. The Lady Tigers are also doing an outstanding job on defense by holding opponents to 36.2% shooting from the field.

Texas Southern is led by women’s basketball legend Cynthia Cooper-Dyke. However, they come in only averaging 43.8 points per game. Texas Southern does not score much, but they play hard and show on the defensive end. The Lady Tigers come into the match forcing close to 17 turnovers per game.

Players To Watch

LSU

Khayla Pointer is LSU’s leading scorer, averaging 18. 5 points per contest. She also averages four assists per game. The team’s second-leading scorer, Alexis Morris, averages 14 points per game. Against Iowa State, Pointer and Morris combined to score 45 points, including a career 25 from Morris.

Texas Southern

Texas Southern’s top scorer, Shalexxus, averages 10.5 points per game. In addition, Niya Mitchell grabs 8.3 rebounds per game and adds 9.3 points, while Ashley Austin leads the team with 1.8 assists per game while averaging 6.5 points.

Prediction

It should be a relatively easy game for LSU, Texas Southern struggles scoring, and LSU plays good defense. Expect Lady Tigers to win by double-digits.

LSU women’s basketball will open first practice to the public

LSU women’s basketball will host an open practice next Wednesday.

The LSU women’s basketball team will usher in a new era under head coach Kim Mulkey. The Louisiana native returned to her home state to take over the team. She left Baylor after 22 seasons and three national championships. In the first opportunity to see the women’s team, practice will be open to the public.

The first official LSU Women’s Basketball practice under head coach Kim Mulkey, scheduled for Wednesday, September 29, will be open for fans and media to attend on the main floor of the PMAC.

The open practice will begin at 2 p.m. CT and fans, who are asked to wear masks while attending the practice, will be able to enter through the PMAC’s lower Southeast and Southwest entrances. When coming to campus, fans will be able to park in lot 104, next to the Bernie Moore Track Stadium.

The Tigers will have two exhibition games which will both be free for fans to attend. LSU is scheduled to host Langston on October 30 at 2 p.m. and Loyola on November 4 at 6 p.m.

Nine players return from last year’s team that finished 9-13 and 6-8 in SEC play. Mulkey hopes to turn their luck around after missing the NCAA Tournament a season ago. The top scorer from last season Khayla Pointer will return this season. Last year she averaged 16.9 points per game.

Game balls following LSU women’s basketball’s loss to South Carolina

The LSU women’s basketball team lost at top-ranked South Carolina 66-59 despite 19 points from Jailin Cherry.

The LSU women’s basketball team lost at No. 1 South Carolina on Sunday 66-59.

In the loss, LSU moves to 8-10 overall on the season and 6-6 in SEC play. South Carolina improves to 17-2 overall and 12-0 in SEC games.

LSU hung in with the Gamecocks for most of the game. The Tigers trailed 34-22 at the half. But in the second half, LSU found a way to fight back into the game.

In the third quarter, LSU got outscored 20-16, but trailed 54-41 entering the final quarter of play. The fourth quarter is where LSU may a comeback attempt. The Tigers outscored South Carolina 21-12, but still lost by seven points.

Here are the top performers for the Tigers following Sunday’s loss.

Jailin Cherry

Cherry scored 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor. She led the team in scoring on Sunday against the top team in the country.

Cherry finished 3-of-4 at the free-throw line and had five rebounds and one assist.
