Khalif Battle commits to Gonzaga out of transfer portal

The chances were always small, but now it’s all but certain K.B. won’t be returning to the Hogs.

Khalif Battle will not return to the Arkansas basketball team in 2024-25, committing, instead to play at Gonzaga.

Battle entered the transfer portal shortly after the season ended and coach Eric Musselman left Arkansas for Southern California. Arkansas hired John Calipari as replacement and Battle’s status as of-yet-committed left open the possibility of a return to the Razorbacks.

Battle is fourth Arkansas player to commit to another school from out of the transfer portal this offseason. Joseph Pinion went to Arkansas State. Baye Fall went to Kansas State. Tramon Mark went to Baylor.

Battle was Arkansas’ best offensive player in the second half of the season. He scored 137 points over a four-game stretch in the Hogs’ SEC Tournament push, achieving the highest point total by any SEC player in the last 20 years over such a span.

Arkansas still has a handful of players left in the portal from last year’s roster. Guards Keyon Menifield, Layden Blocker, Devo Davis and forward Denijay Harris were scholarship players for the Hogs and Cade Arbogast was a walk-on.

Hogs aim to keep head above water in regular-season finale at Alabama

The Razorbacks basketball team is fighting to stay above .500 in finale against Alabama.

It’s been 14 years since the Arkansas basketball team finished with an overall record below .500. Currently, at the break-even mark of 15-15, heading into Saturday’s regular-season finale at No. 16 Alabama, pride is still on the line.

The last time the Razorbacks finished with more losses than wins was under former Head Coach John Pelphrey, when they ended the season at 14-18 in 2009-10. The Mike Anderson-coached Hogs finished 16-16 in 2015-16.

A win against the Crimson Tide all be guarantees that Arkansas will finish at least 16-16, even with a first-round loss in next weekend’s SEC Tournament. A loss to Alabama on Saturday would force the Hogs into winning at least two games in the conference tournament, for a chance to break even. That could also change with any further postseason tournaments.

Arkansas, who is just 6-11 in SEC play, put on one of its best performances of the season in Wednesday’s 94-83 win over LSU, as the Razorbacks shot 60.8 percent from the field and senior Khalif Battle broke the SEC’s four-game scoring record.

Battle’s game-high 29 points left him one point short of being the first Razorback to ever score at least 30 points in four straight games. But it also game him 141 points over his past four outings, surpassing the previous four-game scoring total of 134, set by Kentucky’s Jodie Meeks in 2009.

Going into Wednesday’s game, Battle had put up a career-high 42 against Missouri, 36 against Vanderbilt and 34 in a slugfest loss to Kentucky.

“I always feel really confident,” Battle said following the LSU game. “I don’t think anyone can guard me one-on-one. Coach told me to go for those and-ones, where they had to make a decision whether to foul or just let me score.”

Although he is listed as a graduate senior, Battle still has two years of eligibility remaining after this season – thanks to COVID. Following the LSU win, he sounded like he was all in for at least one more season in Fayetteville, clarifying to the media that he had “another year left,” when asked about the Senior Night honors.

“I’m a Razorback,” he said. “I’m right here. I’m a Razorback. Ain’t nothing changed. I’m a Razorback until the end.”

Alabama (20-10, 12-5 SEC) comes in with three losses in its last four games, falling to No. 17 Kentucky, 117-95, before bouncing back with a 103-88 win over Ole Miss. But the Crimson Tide has dropped two straight – 81-74 at home to Tennessee and a 105-87 loss at Florida.

In the 68 previous meetings between the Hogs and Tide, Arkansas holds a slight 36-32 advantage in the all-time series. But the two programs are deadlocked at 29-29 since the Razorbacks joined the SEC in 1991.

The game will tip at 11 a.m. Saturday on ESPN, with Tom Hart and former Razorback Jimmy Dykes on the call.

Sounds like he’s returning – Khalif Battle: “I’m a Razorback til the end”

Woooo! Talk about some good news. KB plans to return to Hogs in 2024-25.

Arkansas guard Khalif Battle said after the Razorbacks’ win over LSU on Wednesday that he planned to return to the team in 2024-25.

Battle has scored 42, 36, 34 and 29 points in his last four games, setting the record for the highest-scoring four-game stretch in the SEC in the last 20 years. His breakout during the last three weeks has coincided with Arkansas’ best stretch of the season.

During the post-game press conference Wednesday, Battle was asked what his plans may be next year. He has a year of eligibility left.

“I’m a Razorback,” he said. “I’m a Razorback til the end.”

The remarks may have been in the passion of the post-game moment, but are clearly a positive for his return to the team next season, even in an era in which the transfer portal has created a multitude of questions for teams across the country.

For the season Battle has averaged more than 13 points per game and has shot more than 85% from the free-throw line. He has shot a double-digit number of free throws in each of his last five games. Arkansas has gone 3-2 in that stretch.

The win Wednesday lifted the Razorbacks to 15-15 overall and 6-11 in SEC play. Arkansas will close its regular season Saturday at Alabama.

Razorbacks to honor nine seniors, host LSU in home-season finale

Senior Khalif Battle will challenge scoring record as Razorbacks host LSU in Bud Walton Arena.

With a winning or losing record still in the balance, the Arkansas basketball team will look to return to the break-even mark Wednesday night when rival LSU comes to Bud Walton Arena for a 6 p.m. tip-off.

Arkansas (14-15, 5-11 SEC) nearly pulled off a huge upset at No. 15 Kentucky on Saturday, but got the short end of the foul parade and stumbled late to a 111-102 loss.

A win or loss against the Tigers (16-13, 8-8 SEC) won’t mean much in the big picture, as Arkansas would need a miracle run to win the upcoming SEC Tournament, regardless. But I win over their long-time adversary would at least be a feather in the cap.

It will be Senior Night, so all nine of the Razorbacks’ seniors will be recognized, led by four-year Hog, Davonte “Devo” Davis.

The only real question is whether senior Khalif Battle can become the first Razorback to ever score at least 30 points in his fourth straight game. The 6-foot-5 Temple-transfer has lit up the scoreboard of late, knocking down a career-high 42 against Missouri, followed by 36 against Vanderbilt, then 34 in Saturday’s loss to Kentucky.

He helped bolster his output by making an astounding 45-of-49 free throws – 91.8 percent – over those three games.

Battle and former Hog Mason Jones are the only two players to tally three straight 30-point games. Jones did it in 2020, while eventually being named SEC Player of the Year.

This will be the 79th time the Razorbacks and Tigers have met on the court, dating back to 1949, when LSU claimed a 62-46 win in Baton Rouge. The teams split their first 10 matchups, before Arkansas went on an 11-game win streak against the Tigers. The Hogs leads the all-time series, 42-36, including 38-31 since joining the SEC in 1991.

Arkansas has won four of the last six overall meetings, but did fall at LSU earlier this season, 95-74. The Razorbacks also hold a 23-8 advantage in games played in Fayetteville.

Wednesday’s game will air live on the SEC Network, with Mike Morgan and former Razorback Joe Kleine on the call.

Hogs tangle with No. 15 Kentucky; Battle on verge of scoring history

Arkansas has a two-game win streak at Rupp Arena, but the Razorbacks enter Saturday’s game as a 13.5-point underdog.

Just when it looked like it may finally be turning the corner this season, the disappointing Arkansas basketball team squashed any momentum with an 85-82 loss to Vanderbilt in Bud Walton Arena on Tuesday night.

Now, the ravaged Razorbacks (14-14, 5-10 SEC), a 13.5-point underdog,  must now try to get back in the win column playing inside one of college basketball’s toughest environments, Kentucky’s legendary Rupp Arena. The Hogs and No. 15 Wildcats will tip off at 12:30 p.m. on CBS.

Arkansas had won its previous two games, prior to Tuesday, taking out Texas A&M on the road and Missouri at home – completing the season-sweep against both teams. But Vandy (8-20, 3-12) hobbled into Fayetteville and defeated the Razorbacks for the third straight time.

This will be the second meeting of the season for the Cats and Hogs, after Kentucky (20-8, 10-5 SEC) won 63-57 in Fayetteville on Jan. 27. Arkansas led at halftime of that game, and even held the advantage with 13 minutes left in the game, but then allowed the Wildcats to score eight unanswered points down the stretch to seal their fate.

Arkansas and Kentucky have a celebrated history against each other, although the Wildcats do hold a 35-14 lead in the all-time series. This will be the 50th meeting between the two schools on the hardwood. Although Kentucky does hold a 15-5 edge in Rupp, the Razorbacks have won the past two meetings in that arena.

Senior Khalif Battle has been on fire the past two games for Arkansas, putting up a career-high 42 points in the win over Missouri, then 36 against Vanderbilt. The 78 points in back-to-back games rank second in program history, only behind Martin Terry’s 82 in back-to-back games in 1973. Terry scored 35 at TCU, then 47 at home against SMU.

If Battle can score 30 points on Saturday, he would join Mason Jones as the only Razorbacks to score 30-plus in three straight contests. In 2020, Jones put up 34 against South Carolina, then 30 at Alabama, followed by 40 at home against Auburn. He was named AP SEC Player of the Year following that season.

After Kentucky, the Hogs have two regular-season games remaining Those include its final home game against LSU on Mar. 6, then the finale at Alabama on Mar. 9.

Beyond the Box Score: Khalif Battle’s 42 points second-highest this century

Khalif Battle’s 42 points is good for the second-highest this century and 7th all-time for the Hogs.

Makhi Mitchell has been electric for the last 7 games. Now Khalif Battle is going off? Arkansas might be onto something here late in the season.

The Hogs took down Mizzou 88-73 today in a high-octane offensive game. For the first 3 minutes, Arkansas and Mizzou couldn’t buy a shot, but when they finally put one in the basket, it was off to the races.

Arkansas finished with 22-52 (48%) on the floor  and 10-25 (40%) from downtown. Battle led the Hogs with a career-high 42 points while playing nearly the entire game. Mitchell was next with 13, marking his seventh game scoring double-digits in the last eight.

Sean East II was essentially the Tigers’ entire offense, scoring 33 points with nearly half (15) coming from the free throw line.

The Razorbacks out-rebounded Mizzou 33-27, but they surprisingly out-blocked Arkansas 4-2.

Arkansas will take on Vanderbilt on Tuesday in hopes of claiming its third SEC victory in a row.

Now, let’s take a look at Arkansas’ win over Mizzou:

Social media posts more positive after Razorbacks win over Mizzou

Khalif Battle’s career-high 42 points gave Arkansas fans a reason to cheer on Saturday.

For the first time this season, the Arkansas basketball team has won back-to-back games in the SEC. The Razorbacks (14-13, 5-9) outscored Missouri 52-39 in the second half on Saturday and swept the season series with the Tigers, following the 88-73 win in Bud Walton Arena.

Senior Khalif Battle was absolutely on fire, scoring a career-high 42 points, marking the 13th time in Razorback history that a player has topped 40. Coming into the game averaging 10.6 points per contest, Battle went an efficient 11-of-15 from the field, including 6-of-10 from the arc and a perfect 14-of-14 from the foul line.

The feedback on social media following the game was about as positive as it has been since conference play began in January, although there are still a few disgruntled outliers, who are going to complain and whine, no matter the outcome.

Here is a sample of the posting on X, after Arkansas’s victory on Saturday:

Battle Ship: Hogs’ Khalif B. drops 40-plus as Hogs beat Missouri

Khalif Battle did something only Todd Day has ever done in an Arkansas uniform.

Khalif Battle scored a career-high 42 points to lead Arkansas to a 88-73 win over Missouri on Saturday from Bud Walton Arena in what provided the Razorbacks with back-to-back wins for the first time since December.

Battle, a transfer from Temple, shot 11 of 15 from the floor, including 6 of 10 from 3-point range, and was 14 of 14 from the foul line. Twenty-six of his 42 points came in the second half as the Razorbacks expanded on their two-point halftime lead.

The Razorbacks had just one other player in double figures – Makhi Mitchell with 13 – but as a team shot 48% from the field while holding Mizzou to 39%. Devo Davis also played a large role for Arkansas, scoring eight points, grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out six assists.

Arkansas hadn’t won more than a single game in a row in the 2024 calendar year. Last time out, the Razorbacks beat Texas A&M and Saturday’s win over the Tigers lifted coach Eric Musselman’s team back above .500 (15-14, 5-9 SEC).

Battle’s 42 points are the most by any player in an SEC game this season and the second most by an Arkansas player in an SEC game ever, trailing on Todd Day’s 43 against LSU in 1992.

Razorbacks’ record below .500 for first time in Musselman tenure

Makhi Mitchell turned in a game-high 21 points, but that didn’t prove to be enough for the Razorbacks.

After senior El Ellis gave Arkansas a two-point lead with 1:07 remaining Saturday – with a chance at victory – the Razorbacks went scoreless the rest of the way. The Hogs missed two shots from the field and two from the free throw line in the final minute, ultimately falling on the road at Mississippi State, 71-67.

This marks the first time in Head Coach Eric Musselman’s tenure at Arkansas that the Hogs (12-13, 3-9 SEC) have fallen below .500. The last time they had more losses than wins, was under former coach Mike Anderson in 2018, after dropping the season-opener to Texas, 73-72, in overtime. The last time the Hogs sank that far during conference play was in 2015-16, when they fell to 12-14. yet they still finished 16-16 that season.

Arkansas was without two of their primary post players on Saturday, as 6-foot-11 sophomore Trevon Brazile continues to be out with a sore knee, and 6-foot-10 senior Jalen Graham was sidelined with a shoulder injury he sustained  against Tennessee on Wednesday.

“First of all, I’m super proud of the effort,” Arkansas Head Coach Eric Musselman said. “When you’re without a preseason all-league player, who is 6-foot-11, any team in the league would go through some struggles.

“I know our fans, our locker room, our coaching staff, and our players are super frustrated without coming away with a win. But we played as hard as we possibly could tonight.”

Mississippi State true freshman Josh Hubbard turned in a team-high 19 points for the Bulldogs, but none bigger than his three-pointer with 58 seconds left, which put State up, 68-67, and proved to be the game-winner. The Dogs hit three free throws in the final 10 seconds to ice it.

Senior Makhi Mitchell was the workhorse for the Razorbacks, turning in his most impressive performance in his two seasons in Fayetteville. The 6-foot-10 forward scored 15 of his game-high 21 points in the second half, while adding six rebounds, a steal and two blocked shots. He finished 8-of-12 from the field and 5-of-5 from the line.

After scoring the first four points of the game, the Razorbacks surrendered 10 unanswered to the Bulldogs, over the next three minutes. The teams then began trading baskets, until El Ellis’ 13-foot jumper midway through the half cut the lead to 18-13.

Junior Tramon Mark drained a three to tie the score at 29-29 with 3:02 remaining, before Mississippi State scored the final five points of the half, to take a 34-29 lead into the intermission.

An old-fashioned three-point play – a layup and a free throw – by Mitchell eventually tied the game at 46-46 with 12:28 remaining. Then Mitchell scored another layup to give the Razorbacks a 48-46 advantage.

The game stayed within three points until the end, as neither offense produced much down the stretch. Mitchell tied the score at 61-61 with a dunk, then gave the Hogs a two-point lead on a layup with 2:15 left in the game.

With State up 68-67, Bulldog senior Cameron Matthews missed a pair of free throws with 29 seconds left, giving Arkansas a chance to take the lead. Unfortunately, the Razorbacks failed to get a shot off before turning it back over with 11 seconds to go.

Mississippi State (17-8, 6-6) outrebound Arkansas, 42-27, in the game, including 17 offensive boards. The Bulldogs were 19-of-32 from the line, and made as many free throws as Arkansas took (14-of-19).

Senior Khalif Battle was the only other Razorback to finish with double-digit scoring, putting up a solid 18 points, to go with two rebounds and two assists

Matthews turned in a double-double for the Dogs, scoring 17, by hitting 6-of-7 shots from the field, and yanking down a game-high 10 rebounds.

Arkansas will face another road challenge on Tuesday, with a trip to Texas A&M. The game will tip at 6 p.m. on ESPN.

Fans on social media somewhat mum prior to clash with Georgia

Social media has been relatively quiet from Razorback basketball fans.

Despite its recent rocky road, the Arkansas basketball team returns to Bud Walton Arena on Saturday for the first time in 14 days, and is a 3.5-point favorite over Georgia.

The Razorbacks (11-11, 2-7 SEC) have struggled out of the gates in conference play, which includes a 76-66 loss at Georgia on Jan. 10. But now, the Bulldogs (14-9, 4-6 SEC) have lost their last four games, including a 75-62 defeat at Mississippi State on Wednesday night.

Arkansas will have senior guard Devante Davis back on the court. The 6-foot-4 Jacksonville product is the longest tenured Hog on the roster, playing in 121 games, including 80 starts, over the past four seasons. He returned to practice on Monday after several days away from the team for undisclosed reasons.

Following a losing football season, Razorback fans have struggled in dealing with a lackluster basketball season – especially with a team who was ranked No. 14 in the AP Top 25 preseason poll.

Social media has been slightly mum from fans heading into the showdown with the Bulldogs. Here are some of the items posted on X:
