‘When you die I celebrate’: Conor McGregor, Ali Abdelaziz exchange heated words

Things got personal once again between Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov’s manager Ali Abdelaziz.

[autotag]Khabib Nurmagomedov[/autotag] might be retired, but the feud between [autotag]Conor McGregor[/autotag] and manager Ali Abdelaziz continues.

On Wednesday, McGregor and Abdelaziz, the CEO of Dominance MMA, engaged in an intense back-and-forth on Twitter. The exchange commenced when McGregor tweeted a screenshot of Nurmagomedov’s face from an infamous bus attack incident in April 2018.

The image was captioned, “Bastrykin! Where is Khabib’s ‘sh*t in his pants medal’? He need this for sh*t his pants 10 rows back.”

Triple Take: Memories of Khabib vs. McGregor and the ugly aftermath

Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor at UFC 229 will forever be a key part of MMA history.

(Editor’s note: This post originally published on Oct. 6, 2020.)

It’s the anniversary of one of the most significant and memorable events in UFC history. [autotag]Khabib Nurmagomedov[/autotag] successfully defended his lightweight title against nemesis [autotag]Conor McGregor[/autotag] in the UFC 229 main event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Oct. 6, 2018.

The grudge match had a dark build-up, with Nurmagomedov and McGregor getting deeply personal ahead of fight night, with family and religion involved. It all spilled out in the octagon as “The Eagle” submitted the brash Irishman in the fourth round. A massive pay-per-view audience and sold-out crowd saw Nurmagomedov dominate, but the lasting memory is what happened afterward, when the champion jumped the octagon fence and kickstarted a chaotic post-fight brawl that caught the attention of the sports and entertainment world.

For better or worse, that UFC 229 bout is one that will stand out in the history books. What do we remember most about that night? MMA Junkie’s John Morgan, Mike Bohn and Nolan King take a trip down memory lane in this edition of Triple Take.

Video: Cristiano Ronaldo reta cara a cara a Khabib Nurmagomedov

Watch Georges St-Pierre sneak up on Khabib Nurmagomedov for a cool moment

Georges St-Pierre surprised Khabib Nurmagomedov during an interview, leading to a cool moment.

[autotag]Georges St-Pierre[/autotag] might be the only man to ever take [autotag]Khabib Nurmagomedov[/autotag]’s back.

Well, not exactly, but St-Pierre (26-2 MMA, 20-2 UFC) did surprise Nurmagomedov (29-0 MMA, 13-0 UFC) during his interview Friday at the Arnold Sports Festival in Birmingham, England.

@georgesstpierre surprises @khabib_nurmagomedov on stage!!!

An UNFORGETTABLE MOMENT 🦅

St-Pierre, a guest who’s also set to make his appearance Friday, faced off with the undefeated Nurmagomedov, which is probably the closest we’ll ever get to see these two legends fighting.

Both Nurmagomedov and recent Hall of Fame inductee St-Pierre have expressed interest in fighting each other over the course of their careers. But in a July interview with MMA Junkie, Nurmagomedov revealed that he declined a recent offer to fight St-Pierre. “The Eagle” insisted that he’s done fighting and while we likely have to put the idea of a superfight to rest, at least we can enjoy the former champions on the same stage.

Video: Were Khabib Nurmagomedov’s comments about Jose Aldo fair or foul?

Khabib Nurmagomedov recently shut down the proposition Jose Aldo is in the midst of a second career peak – and that fired up Conor McGregor.

Perhaps one of the most surprising moments of this past week occurred outside of the usual fight week hustle and bustle.

During a news conference in Russia, former UFC lightweight champion [autotag]Khabib Nurmagomedov[/autotag] came out with criticism of fellow former UFC champion [autotag]Jose Aldo[/autotag] and brushed off any type of discussion that the 34-year-old Brazilian was enjoying a second peak of his career. He compared Aldo (30-7 MMA, 20-6 UFC) to [autotag]Conor McGregor[/autotag] and called them both “businessmen” for recent performance inconsistencies.

It didn’t take long for McGregor (22-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) to publicly take exception to the evaluation as he defended Aldo on Twitter and during an Instagram Live video stream in the days that followed Nurmagomedov’s comments.

So, were Nurmagomedov’s comments about Aldo fair or foul? Did he go too far? Or was he on point? Our “Spinning Back Clique” panel of Matthew Wells, Nolan King, and George Garcia weighed in with host John Morgan.

You can watch their discussion in the video above or check out the full episode below.

Khabib Nurmagomedov: Ring girls ‘the most useless people in martial arts’

Khabib Nurmagomedov doesn’t see a need for ring girls in his new MMA promotion.

[autotag]Khabib Nurmagomedov[/autotag] doesn’t see a need to have ring girls in his promotion.

Nurmagomedov, who recently bought Russian MMA promotion Gorilla Fighting Championship, won’t have ring girls in his newly branded “Eagle Fighting Championship.”

The former UFC lightweight champion deems ring girls unnecessary, and even if you disagree with him, Nurmagomedov says he’s entitled to his own opinion.

“Look, I don’t want to offend anyone: Ring girls are the most useless people in martial arts,” Nurmagomedov said at a Moscow press conference. “What is their function? I have a question. You can show that it is the second round on the screen.

“I realize that is a history (behind ring card girls). History knows many mistakes. We read history to avoid mistakes of the past in the future. If we look in the history, it says they are useless. That is my personal opinion. Dana White maybe likes it. Maybe you do, too. But my name is not Dana. My name is Khabib.”

Nurmagomedov went on to use an example of how uncomfortable he’d be if he attended an event with his father, who died in 2020, and ring girls were present – citing differences in his cultural values.

“I sit with my father (at an event),” “Every person has his own preferences – the culture and values. I come to fight night (and) sit with my father. These (ring card girls) are passing by and showing people that it is the second round. But no one looks at the (round number). I feel uncomfortable with my father. I am not against it. If you want, you can do it. But don’t impose it to me. Do it aside. There are the designated places for it. I think we must not mix all of it. This is my (personal) opinion.”

Conor McGregor rips Khabib Nurmagomedov for criticizing Jose Aldo: ‘100 times the fighter you are’

None of what Khabib had to say about Jose Aldo’s career resurgence sat well with Conor McGregor.

Not that [autotag]Conor McGregor[/autotag] necessarily needs a reason to go after [autotag]Khabib Nurmagomedov[/autotag], but the former UFC two-division champion isn’t OK with his nemesis being critical of [autotag]Jose Aldo[/autotag].

Nurmagomedov made it clear earlier this week that he doesn’t believe Aldo has another title run in him, despite Aldo turning things around of late as a bantamweight, where he’s on a two-fight winning streak after defeating Pedro Munhoz at UFC 265.

“How is he showing it?” Nurmagomedov said. “He got beat up when he fought … Petr, right? A guy wins one fight and everyone starts talking. When Conor (McGregor) fought (Donald) ‘Cowboy’ (Cerrone), he looked like a lion. When he fights stronger opponents, he looks like a scared chicken. Fighting top fighters shows your worth. … The level of Russia’s football team will be shown against Croatia, not Malta.

“A fight against ‘Cowboy’ won’t show what level you’re at, just like Aldo’s fight against Pedro Munhoz. Let him fight Petr the same way. Then we can say he’s peaking again.”

Nothing about that assessment sat well with McGregor, who slammed Nurmagomedov in Aldo’s defense on Twitter.

This guy is still talking? Another press conference? You shit your pants of cerrone your whole career. You pulled 3 times from him. Your father, god rest his soul, could not believe his eyes the way I beat Cerrone. You disrespect cerrone and now aldo too? You ran away. Shut up.

Another press conference? Haha for what? You are doing a whole load of nothing mate. You and cerrone where locked in to fight since way back and you never had the courage. You ran away and now all you do is talk like bitch. Aldo is 100 times the fighter you are, and ever will be.

McGregor’s history with both Aldo and Nurmagomedov is well documented.

McGregor scored a 13-second knockout of Aldo in December 2015 to claim the undisputed featherweight title at UFC 194, the culmination of a wild build-up that included a world tour filled with antics.

Nearly three years later, McGregor was choked out by Nurmagomedov in their October 2018 lightweight title fight at UFC 229. Things got so personal between McGregor and Nurmagomedov in the lead-up, a brawl ensued after the fight when Nurmagomedov jumped the cage fence and went after McGregor’s team.

Despite a history of heat with both men, McGregor has seemed to come around on showing respect to Aldo, who’s widely considered the greatest featherweight of all time. The same can’t be said of McGregor’s feelings toward Nurmagomedov.

Khamzat Chimaev says falling out with Khabib Nurmagomedov was social media misunderstanding

Rising UFC prospect Khamzat Chimaev reveals falling out with Khabib Nurmagomedov.

[autotag]Khamzat Chimaev[/autotag]’s relationship with [autotag]Khabib Nurmagomedov[/autotag] seems to have endured a rocky patch.

The rising UFC prospect revealed he had a falling out with the former UFC lightweight champion over what he claims to be a misunderstanding over some social media comments. Chimaev (9-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) replied to a fan online, who said Nurmagomedov was going to “smash him,” that he would do the same to the retired UFC superstar.

The Chechen fighter now says it was a misunderstanding and that he didn’t meant it in a personal manner to Nurmagomedov, but more on the side of being up to any challenge as a fighter ready to fight anyone.

“Some guy write something about me like, ‘Khabib going to smash you,’ and I answer for this guy, but it was my wrong because I answer to this bullsh*t guy that nobody knows,” Chimaev told Frontkick.online. “I answer him if he wants to smash me, I’m going to smash him, too. (I answered) like this because I’m a real man and I’m going to answer like that. If somebody says he’ll smash you, what do you want me to say?

“He said, ‘Khabib going to smash you,’ and in my head, if somebody says he’s going to smash you, of course I’m going to answer, ‘Nobody is going to smash me. I’m going to smash everybody.’

“If you’re a real man, you have to think like that, (unless) you’re some chicken you can’t stay up. Sometimes you forget you’re famous, and I become famous like one day before, and still sometimes and you wake up and think it’s normal life for you.”

[lawrence-related id=659319,629892]

Chimaev said he’s has no problem with Nurmagomedov and always rooted for him in his career. Chimaev even said his mother prayed for Nurmagomedov when he was gearing up to defend his title against Conor McGregor.

“This guy I looked up to him in the beginning, and I still look up to him because he became a champ and he’s one of the best fighters in the world,” Chimaev said. “People think I hate him, but I love him because he’s Muslim. I’m Muslim. It’s like the same like he comes from some village like me, same country. Small republic like Chechnya, Dagestan like this is still the same. I have a lot of brothers from Dagestan, and yeah, I’m Muslim, he’s Muslim – alhamdulillah.”

Chimaev returns to the octagon in October. He takes on China’s Li Jingliang (17-6 MMA, 9-4 UFC) at UFC 267, which is expected to take place in Abu Dhabi. Chimaev is unbeaten in his MMA career. The bout with Jingliang will be his first fight back since battling complications from COVID-19, which kept him out of action in late 2020 and the first half of 2021.
