Broncos coaching staff updates: Denver might make an unconventional move

Here are some of the latest updates for the Broncos’ 2023 coaching staff.

There have been a few developments since our last update on the state of the Denver Broncos’ coaching staff.

First up, the departures: After being let go by Denver, inside linebackers coach Peter Hansen has joined the Carolina Panthers in a lateral move. He will reunite with defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero in Charlotte.

The Broncos are also losing defensive intern coach DeAndre Thompson, who announced on Twitter he has joined the Detroit Lions.

Elsewhere on the coaching front, offensive assistant Kevin Petry has decided to remain with the New Orleans Saints after drawing interest from Denver. And former Broncos offensive line coach Butch Barry has landed an o-line coach job with the Miami Dolphins.

Finally, the most notable development of the last 48 hours: The Broncos have discussed bringing 75-year-old coach Mike Westhoff out of retirement to join Sean Payton‘s staff “in some capacity,” according to The MMQB’s Albert Breer.

Bringing coaches out of retirement certainly isn’t unheard of — Denver just brought a 67-year-old Jerry Rosburg out of retirement last year to serve as a senior assistant, but it’s also not common.

Westhoff has served as a special teams coach with four different teams, but he hasn’t coached in the NFL since 2018. The veteran coach worked under Payton with the Saints from 2017-2018.

If the Broncos do hire Westhoff, it presumably wouldn’t be as the special teams coordinator. He would be more likely to join the team as a consultant or senior assistant, similar to the kind of role Bill Kollar (70) had last year.

Report: Offensive assistant Kevin Petry staying with Saints, won’t join Broncos

Report: Offensive assistant Kevin Petry staying with Saints, won’t join Broncos

Three cheers for Kevin Petry. NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill reports that Petry is staying with the New Orleans Saints as an offensive assistant coach, opting to remain in Louisiana rather than join Sean Payton with the Denver Broncos. Petry has climbed the ladder on the Saints coaching staff and most recently began working with the quarterbacks.

It makes sense that he’d want to stay. Petry is a Louisiana native and an LSU graduate with a lot of local connections. Uprooting and moving to Denver would be a massive change. If he has opportunities for advancement in New Orleans with Payton siphoning other assistant coaches to staff the Broncos offense, this could end up being the better move for him.

Saints quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Ronald Curry is interviewing for the Broncos offensive coordinator job soon, and they’ve already lost assistant offensive line coach Zach Strief to Denver. Another assistant coach, Declan Doyle, is in consideration for the Broncos’ tight ends coach position. Payton hasn’t taken anyone who isn’t replaceable with him to Denver, but the Saints will still be busy searching for replacements to any future departures.

Broncos coaching staff changes: 6 moves on deck

Here’s the latest on the Broncos’ coaching staff changes.

The coaching staff changes continue for the Denver Broncos.

The Broncos have “parted ways” with inside linebackers coach Peter Hansen, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. Denver also won’t bring back outside linebackers coach Bert Watts, according to The Denver Post‘s Parker Gabriel.

Meanwhile, the Broncos are eyeing New Orleans Saints offensive assistant Declan Doyle as a tight ends coach, according to Josina Anderson of CBS Sports. That presumably means that holdover TEs coach Jake Moreland is out.

Denver is also targeting Saints assistant to the head coach/offensive assistant Kevin Petry, according to Jeff Duncan of The Times-Picayune. It’s unclear what role Petry would hold with the Broncos.

After bringing in ex-Saints Zach Strief as their new offensive line coach, Klis reports that the team is not expected to retain assistant OL coach Ben Steele.

Klis has also named-dropped Dan Dalrymple as a potential candidate to replace former strength and conditioning coach Loren Landow.

Sean Payton offered Saints assistant Kevin Petry a role on Broncos’ staff

Nola.com’s Jeff Duncan reports that Sean Payton has offered a role on the Broncos’ staff to Saints assistant Kevin Petry:

We can add another name to the list of New Orleans Saints assistant coaches who may be following Sean Payton to the Denver Broncos. Nola.com’s Jeff Duncan reports that offensive assistant Kevin Petry has been offered a role on the Broncos’ coaching staff under Payton, who gave him his start in the NFL with the Saints. Petry is a Louisiana native and LSU graduate, so moving to Denver would be a big change.

Payton is actively filling out his staff from New Orleans’ roster, offering promotions to coaches like Zach Strief, Declan Doyle, and Petry while considering roles for a group of former Saints coaches that includes Dan Roushar, Kris Richard, and Joe Lombardi. Payton made a lot of connections over the years in New Orleans so some departures should be expected.

He also isn’t taking any high-level assistants with him; these are all assistant position coaches and football operations personnel who won’t be hard to replace. Offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr.’s name has not come up, but it’s unlikely the Saints would allow him to leave anyway. General manager Mickey Loomis has already pledged to block any lateral moves and the Saints wouldn’t want to go looking for a new offensive coordinator this late in the hiring cycle. We’ll update this space if Petry and those other assistants accept Payton’s offer.
